Control Effects of Imicyafos GR against Two Species of the Root-knot Nematodes (Meloidogyne incognita and Meloidogyne hapla) (살선충제 Imicyafos 입제의 2종 뿌리혹선충에 대한 방제 효과)

  • Efficacy of novel nematicide, imicyafos GR was evaluated against two species of the root-knot nematodes in pot and greenhouse conditions. When tested in pots, the population of Meloidogyne incognita and M. hapla was reduced sixty days after treatment, with mortality rate of 91.5% and 90.6%, respectively. Suppression effect of imicyafos GR on root galling in tomato was tested. The number of root galls caused by M. incognita and M. hapla was reduced 60 days after nematode inoculation, with the efficacy of 94.2% and 95.1%, respectively. Under greenhouse conditions planted with watermelon, melon, cucumber, and tomato, the efficacy of imicyafos GR on M. incognita persisted up to 60 days after treatment, showing 90% of control efficacy. Moreover, the number of root galling was more reduced than fosthiazate treatment, with the potential as a control agent.

Effect of the Infection Times by Zucchini yellow mosaic virus on the Yield and Growth in Cucumber (ZYMV 감염시기가 오이 생육 및 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • We investigated the effect of the infection times and infection degrees at transplanting time of Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) on the growth and yield of cucumber plants at the semi-forcing and the retarding culture in 2007. When cucumber was inoculated with ZYMV at transplanting time, 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 days after transplanting, vine length, internode length, number of leaf of the plants and marketable yield largely decreased as the cucumber infected earlier. The regression models were obtained between the disease incidence levels at 20 days after transplanting as the inoculation degrees and the marketable yield of cucumber: y = $9333.1e^{-0.0317x}$ ($R^2$ = 0.8946) at the semi-forcing culture and y = $14695e^{-0.0303x}$ ($R^2$ = 0.8735) at the retarding culture. And the cucumber yield loss regression models between the symptoms incidence days from the final harvesting time and the rates of yield decrease were expressed as y=1.0851x - 6.7067 ($R^2$ = 0.9567) at the semi-forcing culture andy=1.0439x + 2.1321 ($R^2$ = 0.9674) at the retarding culture.

Isolation and Structure Identification of Antifungal Substance from Aspergillus terreus (Aspergillus terreus로부터 항진균성 물질의 분리 및 구조분석)

  • In the course of search antagonistic fungi from soil in green house, four kind of fungi (AF1, AF2, AF3, AF4) were isolated, which have activities against Phytophthora capsici, Botrytis cinera, Rhizoctonia solani, Pythium ultimum and Fusarium oxysporum. The AF2 was identified according to the morphological description of Aspergillus terreus. This antagonistic fungus inhibiting various plant pathogens was effective to reduce disease incidence of cucumber seedlings caused by mixed inoculum of Rhizoctonia solani, Pythium ultimum and Fusarium oxysporum. Antifungal compound I was isolated and purified by fresh chromatography from A. terreus. The $^1H$ and $^{13}C$ assignment of compound I was achieved from two-dimensional $^1H-^1H\;COSY$, HMQC, HMBC with the add of homonuclear and heteronuclear double resonance experiment. The compound I was identified butyrolactone I (${\alpha}$-oxo-${\beta}$-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-${\gamma}$-(p-hydroxy-m-3,3-dimethyl-allylbenzyl)-${\gamma}$-methoxycarbonyl-${\gamma}$-butyrolactone, $C_{24}H_{24}O_7$, M.W.=424).

Biological Control of Cotton Caterpillar, Palpita indica Saunder (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) with Entomopathogenic Nematodes (곤충병원성 선충을 이용한 목화바둑명나방(Palpita indica Saunder)의 생물적방제)

  • Entomopathogenic nematodes were effective in the control of the cotton caterpillar, Palpita indica Saunder. P. indica mortality was significantly different depending on nematode species, treatment concentration, and instar. S. carpocapsae Pocheon strain was more effective against P. indica than S. glaseri Dongrae strain, S. longicaudum Nonsan strain, Heterorhabditis sp. Gyeongsan isolate, and H. bacteriophora Hamyang strain. When S. carpocapsae was treated with the rate of > 20 infective juveniles (ijs)/larva, mortality was ca. 100% at the 1st-4th instars of P. indica in 72h. $LC_{50}$ of entomopathogenic nematodes were significantly different depending on nematode species. The lowest $LC_{ 50}$ value was obtained by S. carpocapsae with 4.9-8.2 ijs in the 1st-prepupa while the highest $LC_{50}$ by Heterorhabditis sp. with 5.5-21.9 ijs, the shortest LT$_{50}$ value of P. indica was induced by S. carpocapsae when 20 ijs/larva were inoculated. The $LT_{50}$ s were 3.4-9.2h against the 1st-prepupa. The mortality of P. indica in fields was significantly different depending on field condition, nematode concentration, and leaf location. Mortality of P. indica by S. carpocapsae was higher at greenhouse,$ 3$\times$10^{9}$ ijs/ha and upper leaves than at field, 1$\times$10$^{9}$ ijs/ha and lower and middle leaves, respectively.

Monitoring on Insecticide Resistance of Major Insect Pests in Plastic House (시설 재배 작물 주요 해충에 대한 약제저항성 모니터링)

  • This study was carried out for looking into the status of susceptibility of vinyl house insect pests to insecticides. The Thrips (Thrips palmi and Frankliniela occidentalis), Mites (Tetranychus urticae), Aphids (Aphis gossypii) and Whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum) were captured at various areas where the host crop was being cultivated and the susceptibility level of each pest insect was investigated. The susceptibility of each pest insect varied by insect species and areas where they were caught. The tested insecticides showed good control effect to palm thrips in 2000, but in 2003 showed decrease of effect to them. Western flower thrips showed low susceptibility to neonicotinoids, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam, but high to chlorfenapyr, spinosad, emamectinbenzoate and fipronil. Antibiotic insecticides, abamectin and milbemectin, and chlorfenapyr were very effective on mite control and dicofol still had good effectiveness to it despite of long year use. No aphid species showed resistance to pyrethroid and carbamate insecticides. Relatively new insecticides such as imidacloprid, spinosad, pymetrozine were effective to whitefly, but not were organophosphates, carbamates and pyrethroids.

A Comparative Study of the Cognition, ADL and Quality of Life According to General and Pathological Characteristics of the Elderly with Dementia (치매노인의 일반적 및 병리학적 특성에 따른 인지기능, 일상생활동작, 삶의 질의 비교연구)

  • This study was conducted to compare the effects of general and pathological characteristics of elderly with dementia on their cognitive ability, performance of activities of daily living (ADL), and quality of life. Data were collected between July 15 and August 30, 2016 from 136 elderly with dementia who used day care centers. The Korean version of Mini-Mental Status Examination, Korean version of Modified Barthel Index, and Korean version of the WHO Quality of Life Scale Abbreviated Version were used for data collection and values obtained were analyzed accordingly. Significant correlations were found between cognitive ability and performance of ADL, between quality of life and cognitive ability, and between cognitive ability and performance of ADL (p<.001). Moreover, quality of life of elderly with dementia was greatly affected by cognitive ability and performance of ADL (p<.01). Therefore, it is believed that more active therapeutic interventions and studies are needed from sociophysical aspect of elderly with dementia. Development of a Light Extinction Coefficient Change Model according to the Growth Stage of Cucumber in a Greenhouse (온실 내 백다다기 오이의 생육단계에 따른 흡광계수 변화 모델 개발)

  • Understanding the light environment in greenhouse cultivation and the light utilization characteristics of crops is important in the study of photosynthesis and transpiration. Also, as the plant grows, the form of light utilization changes. Therefore, this study aims to develop a light extinction coefficient model reflecting the plant growth. To measure the extinction coefficient, five pyranometers were installed vertically according to the height of the plant, and the light intensity by height was collected every second during the entire growing season. According to each growth stage in the early, middle, and late stages, the difference between the top and bottom light intensity tended to increase to 69%, 72%, and 81%. When leaf area index and plant height increased, the extinction coefficient decreased, and it showed an exponential decay relationship. Three-dimensional model reflecting the two growth indexes, the paraboloid had the lowest RMSE of 1.340 and the highest regression constant of 0.968. Through this study, it was possible to predict the more precise light extinction coefficient during the growing period of plants. Furthermore, it is judged that this can be utilized for predicting and analyzing photosynthesis and transpiration according to the plant height.

Status of Farmers' Application Rates of Chemical Fertilizer and Farm Manure for Major Crops (주요(主要) 논·밭 작물(作物)에 대한 농가시비(農家施肥) 실태(實態))

  • Rate of conventional allpication of chemical fertilizer and farm manure were surveyed for 23 crops and 13,259 farms on paddy and upland fields in 1992. 1. Farmers have applied fertilizers more than optimum levels on vagetable crops. Based on the optimum levels of N, P and K, the excess ratios of N, P, K fertilization were 40%, 138%, and 53% in vagetable crops and 38%, 7%, and 0% in field crops, respectively. 2. Among provinces, the fertilizer application for paddy rice was higher in Chung-nam and Jeon-buk, which have had higher yield compared to other provinces. And that for red pepper was higher in Kang-won, Jeon-nam, Jeon-buk, Kyeong-nam, Kyeong-buk, and for chinese cabbage in Kang-won and Chung-nam. 3. The fertilizers rates at a chief producing districts of crops(CPD) were higher in vagetable crops than in field crops. 4. Compared with total fertilizer levels of open culture, excess fertilizers in plastic house were 5.9kg/10a(21%) of nitrogen, 8.7kg/10a(52%) of phosphorus and 7.1kg/10a(34%) of potasium. In chemical fertilizer application, fertilizer levels of sweet corn, red papper, tomato and lettuce were higher in plastic house, while those of cucumber, strawberry, radish, chinese cabbage were higher in open culture. 5. Ratio of farmers who applied farm manures was below 60 % on field crops and 69~100% on vagetable crops. 6. The compound fertilizer for paddy rice(21-17-17) was applied on all the crops and its application rate was the highest in all the crops except for paddy rice(single cropping), malting barley, soybean, sesame.

The Growth of Cucumber and Variation of Soil Temperature Used by Warming Water Irrigation System (가온관수 시스템에 따른 지온변화와 오이의 생육)

  • A soil temperature was known as extremely important factor in terms of measuring the values of the growth and yield of vegetable in the greenhouse. A low temperature water irrigation was had much trouble in its growth. This study was performed to analyze the effect of the heating water irrigation on the soil temperature and the growth of a cucumber within a greenhouse environment. Soil temperature was 5-7$^{\circ}C$ below to 10cm in depth and 2-3$^{\circ}C$ to 20cm when the irrigation water temperature was 13$^{\circ}C$ (non-warme water irrigation). Soil temperature was similar to irrigation water temperature at 5cm in depth and was 1.5-2$^{\circ}C$ below at 10cm when the irrigation water temperatures were 2$0^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$. The early growth rates of heating water irrigation were 109-110% in plant height, 107-108% in leaf number, 103% in node number compared with those of unheated water irrigation for 30 days after planting it. The rates of total yield were 115% in 2$0^{\circ}C$ water irrigation plots and 121% in $25^{\circ}C$ water irrigation plots while those of unheated water irrigation plots were.

Effects of Tile Drain on Physicochemical Properties and Crop Productivity of Soils under Newly Constructed Plastic Film House (신설 하우스 시설재배지의 파이프 암거배수 효과)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of tile drain on Physicochemical properties and crop productivity of soils under plastic film house for three years (1999 - 2001). Tiles (${\Phi}100mm$ PVC pipe) were established at 50-60 cm depth with 1 m, 2 m, and 3 m intervals in Gangseo silt loam soil under 2W-type plastic film house. Cropping system was a pumpkin-pumpkin in the first year, a cucumber-spinach-crown daisy-spinach-young radish in the second year, and a green red pepper-tomato-spinach in last year, with conventional fertilization and drip or furrow irrigation by groundwater pumping. Bulk density and soil hardness of plot with tile drain were lower than those of control (plot without tile drain). Soil water content was also lower in tile drain plot than in control regardless of soil depth, and decreased at narrower interval and longer distance from tile in the same plot, thus suggesting that water flow and density of tile drain plot was higher than those of control. Rhizosphere of spinach, a final crop of third year, was expanded more than 2 cm due probably to improvement of soil physical properties caused by tiles establishment. Electrical conductivity (EC) of topsoil decreased from $1.22dS\;m^{-1}$ to $0.82dS\;m^{-1}$ by tile drain system, and the extent of EC decrease was different with season: higher in spring and lower in summer and autumn. The $NO_{3^-}-N$ concentration in topsoil decreased, from $200mg\;kg^{-1}$ to $39mg\;kg^{-1}$. The effect of tile drain on crop yield varied with crops. Average crop productivity obtained in tile drain plot than that of control crop: 18.2% in 2 m interval, 14.2% in 3 m interval, but lower 0.2% in 1 m interval.
