The Investigation and Performance Assessment of the Design-Build Projects in Korea (국내 턴키/대안공사 실태조사를 통한 턴키/대안 입찰제도의 성과 분석)

  • Design-build, which is defined as single source responsibility for design and construction, has been widely used in large public works since governmental formulation of measure for encouraging use of design-build in 1996. However, civic groups and small and medium sized enterprises are highlighting over-competition and unbalanced market shares of conglomerate in domestic design-bid market and insisting on decrease in the use of design-build and absorption into the lowest-price bidding. This study collected information about cost, schedule, quality, new technology adoption from 51 civil design-build projects and measured their performance.

  • The contemporary domestic construction landscape has witnessed a contraction, primarily attributed to the operational challenges faced by construction entities and a downtrend in the initiation of new projects. In light of this, domestic construction enterprises are ardently seeking avenues to economize whilst simultaneously amplifying the quality across diverse construction genres. Value engineering (VE), heralded for its prowess in not only cost mitigation but also in accelerating project timelines and bolstering construction quality, has been extensively adopted in refining finishing tasks. However, its application to framework enhancements remains conspicuously limited. Particularly in factory edification, framing emerges as a pivotal process exerting significant influence over the entire construction continuum. Thus, it becomes imperative to integrate VE techniques at the inception phase of framing. This would facilitate a meticulous examination of design schematics and on-site conditions, paving the way for alternative strategies that condense construction durations, economize on costs, and augment work efficiency, all the while upholding paramount standards of quality and safety. Such a venture stands to be foundational in expediting construction timelines, fostering economic efficiency, and buttressing construction safety protocols.

  • In contemporary society, there is a notable rise in single-person households, coupled with an increased demand for residential spaces, necessitating the exploration of suitable housing solutions. Modular architecture is gaining prominence as a method to deliver cost-effective and sustainable living spaces efficiently. This study introduces a method for optimizing the design and construction processes of modular building units through Building Information Modeling(BIM) technology. It involves an analysis of factors that enhance living quality and meet the housing needs of single-person households. Utilizing BIM, a resource-efficient and cost-efficient modular apartment unit has been developed. BIM facilitates the visualization and integration of architectural components, thereby reducing design errors and enhancing productivity. This research evaluates both the benefits and constraints of modular architecture. Modular constructions, when combined with BIM, emerge as a potent solution for housing challenges, enriching the quality and variety of residential options. Nevertheless, considerations such as technical prerequisites and financial implications are also discussed. The study showcases the potential and merits of utilizing BIM for designing apartment units tailored to single-person households, offering a viable approach to ameliorate their living conditions.

Improvement of Field Installation Method for Asphalt Concrete Pavement Strain Gauge (아스팔트 콘크리트 포장 변형률계 매설 방법 개선에 관한 연구)

  • The KHC Test Road project was initiated on 1991 to develop Korean Pavement Design Guide. It was constructed along the Joongbu Inland Expressway line between Yeoju and Gamgok. It is two-lane wide expressway containing fifteen asphalt and twenty-five Portland cement concrete test pavement sections. Various sensors were installed in the Test Road to evaluate the behavior of test pavement sections under the influence of traffic load and environmental change. The most important issues in the sensor installation are the accurate location and long-term survivability. They are directly influenced by the sensor installation methodology. The methodology for asphalt strain gages is mainly discussed in this paper because it is the second important sensors in the KHC Test Road project. In order to find the best methodology, we evaluated existing methodology from prior experience and several conducted test installations. We have tried mound, block out, and trench cuts since 2000. Among three methods, block out was the most effective one in terms of accurate location, long-term survivability, and material homogeneity. However, this method cannot be applied to the wearing coarse so that the mound method was used as an alternative. The block out method was applied to base and intermediate layers while the mound method was used to the wearing coarse. Three hundred seventy-four asphalt strain gauges were installed on asphalt pavement sections from September 3rd to November 18th in 2002. According to the sensor measurement evaluation, 6.3% of sensor demonstrated over ranged readings for mound method installation and 2.5% did for block out method installation. We lost only two sensors during the installation. It is 99.5% survival and it is excellent survival rate according to other experience.

  • In this study, it can be shortened tunnel construction work period by introducing a single-shell tunnel does not placing the secondary concrete lining, a global research trend, reduction of the cost of the lining placement and number of benefits that can ensure the safety of long-term tunnel with a single shell it was to study the tunnel method. First, we analyze the design and construction practices relating to delete lining of the domestic design and construction practices and a comprehensive analysis of the stability study found a rock in good condition interval (1~3 grades), we propose that the lining uninstalled. In the case of domestic changes on the ground floor is very heavy underfoot conditions many so tunneling method by single shell as ground conditions are good and one preferred the water points that apply in less soil, the soil health and poor sections (4~5 grades) reflecting with respect to the concrete lining that is expected reasonable.

Evaluation of Compressive Strength and Freeze-thaw Resistance Properties of Concrete using Superabsorbent Polymer (고 흡수성 폴리머를 혼입한 콘크리트의 압축 강도 및 동결융해 저항성 평가)

  • When the Superabsorbent Polymer (SAP) is added into concrete, the slump decreases rapidly, deteriorating the workability, the internal curing effect can be obtained through the water absorption and discharge process, and the internal voids of the concrete are increased. In this study, the effects of internal curing and voids were evaluated by evaluating the compressive strength, freeze-thaw resistance, and chloride penetration resistance of SAP-adding concrete that secured workability using a water reducing agent. Also, the internal curing effect of SAP was evaluated by dividing the curing conditions of concrete into water curing and sealed curing. From the result, as the SAP adding ratio increased, the amount of water reducing agent increased, and as for the compressive strength, the SAP adding ratio of 1.5% showed the greatest compressive strength. In particular, in the case of sealed curing showed higher compressive strength than the water curing. It is considered that the compressive strength increased due to the reduction of the effective water-cement ratio and the internal curing effect. Adding 1.0~1.5% of SAP improved the freeze-thaw resistance similar to the case of adding the AE agent, and the addition of more than 1.0% of SAP improved the chloride penetration resistance. The optimal adding ratio of SAP is 1.5%, and the adding ratio of 2.0% or more adversely affects the compressive strength and freeze-thaw resistance.

  • As global warming has had harmful effects on the environment, the construction industry has made efforts to reduce the amount of $CO_2$ generated in the process of cement production. There is an urgent need for an alternative material that can replace cement. To improve the initial strength and economical efficiency pointed out as problems, this research was conducted for Blast Furnace Slag (BFS), an industrial byproduct. Non-sintering cement (NSC) was used by minimizing the amount of high-priced alkali activators. By using Nano-technology, fineness has been maximized, to enhance the initial strength of BFS. This research is based on non-sintered cement replaced by nano-slag using alkali activators, and the fundamental properties and quality of the non-sintered cement were investigated. A variety of activators were used, up to 10 percent of the slag weight. This research aims to present fundamental data through a comparative analysis of flexural strength, compressive strength, time of setting, diabetic temperature, and rising heat.

Analysis of Ecological Function and Percent Passing of Erosion Control Dam by Openness (개방형에 따른 사방댐의 투과율 및 생태적 기능 분석)

  • This study was conducted to analyze the openness of erosion control dams situated near mountain stream. The ecological functions of erosion control dams analyzed by such openness for adequately protect and manage the diversity of species and to prevent disasters. The obtained results were as follows. When structurally modifying or changing non-permeable, gravity type dams with a passing rate of less than 1% into open-type dams, the passing rate increased by about 77 times more from 0.72% to 55.8%. Except for closed, gravity type erosion control dams that are constructed with a special purpose such as creating sand deposits and reservoirs, there is a need to construct and improve the dams into permeable type dams that can relatively satisfactorily perform various functions such as carrying soil and sand to the downstream region and create a ecological corridor upstream and downstream for fish and amphibians. The openness based on the blocking height of the erosion control dam varies depending upon the height of the base part and the depth of the substructural part. It must be designed based on the on-site conditions and the purpose of the construction. The functional types of erosion control dams based on the open form of the cross-section as follows: the fish traffic type, flood control type, reservoir type for forest fire control), non-permeability type for soil and rock blocking, net type for blocking the rock flow and the particle screen type.

Properties of Permeable Block using Artificial Permeable Pipe and Polymer Powder VAE to Improve Permeability (투수성을 개선시키기 위해 인공투수관 및 분말형 폴리머 VAE를 사용한 투수블록의 특성)

  • Since 1960, Korea the town center was developed intensively due to rapid industrial development. As a result of the development, the population was concentrated in urban areas and the green area was decreased. Due to the decrease of the green area, the circulation system of the rainwater was changed, hence the rainwater was not introduced into the groundwater., On the other hand, the water on the surface of the road was changed into the water for flowing to the river and evaporation. The changes in the water flow cause many problems, and the depletion of the groundwater does not create an environment in which microorganisms and plants can live. in Korea, permeable pavement construction is increased to solve these problems, but existing pavement blocks have many problems. The pores of the permeable block are clogged due to the accumulation of dust or whitening phenomenon, and the permeability is lost. In this study, the solution of the problems of existing permeable block were suggested by using polymer and artificial permeable pipe, and strength, permeability and service life are increased, The relationship between the substitution rate of the polymer and the mixing ratio of the artificial permeable pipe was analyzed.

Structural Behavior of Beam-to-Column Connections of Circular CFT Structures Improving Concrete Filling (충전성을 개선한 원형 CFT구조의 기둥-보 접합부 구조적 거동)

  • A concrete-filled tube is a concrete-filled steel tube structure. The steel tube confines the concrete to increase the compressive strength, and the concrete contains the buckling of the tube. CFT structures require a diaphragm to prevent buckling of steel at connections. An outer diaphragm has better concrete filling than a through diaphragm due to a large bore, but being larger than the through diagram, it has poorer constructability and cooperation with building equipment. In this study, a CFT structure that uses different types of diaphragms in its upper and lower connections to improve the concrete filling was tested and analyzed via the FEM program. The building structure had a floor slab that was unified with the upper diaphragm, so the outer diaphragm was placed at the upper bound. Moreover, the through diaphragm was placed at the lower connection to avoid obstruction from building equipment. The CFT structure with the improved concrete filling showed the same structural behavior as the CFT structure with the use of the same type of diaphragms at the upper and lower connections.
