  • SEBAL (Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land) developed by Bastiaanssen (1995) is an image-processing model comprisedof twenty-five sub models that calculates spatial evapotranspiration (ET) and other energy exchanges at the surface. SEBAL uses image data from Landsat or other satellites measuring thermal infrared radiation, visible and near infrared. In this study, the model was applied to Gyeongancheon watershed, the main tributary of Han river Basin. ET was computed on apixel-by-pixel basis from an energy balance using 4 years (2001-2004) Landsat and MODIS images. The scale effect between Landsat (30 m) and MODIS (1 km) was evaluated. The results both from Landsat and MODIS were compared with FAO Penman-Monteith ET. The absolute errors between satellite ETs and Penman-Monteith ET were within 12%. The spatial and temporal characteristics of ET distribution within the watershed were also analyzed.

  • Due to river maintenance projects such as the creation of hydrophilic areas around rivers and the Four Rivers Project, the flow characteristics of rivers are continuously changing, and the risk of water quality accidents due to the inflow of various pollutants is increasing. In the event of a water quality accident, it is necessary to minimize the effect on the downstream side by predicting the concentration and arrival time of pollutants in consideration of the flow characteristics of the river. In order to track the behavior of these pollutants, it is necessary to calculate the diffusion coefficient and dispersion coefficient for each section of the river. Among them, the dispersion coefficient is used to analyze the diffusion range of soluble pollutants. Existing experimental research cases for tracking the behavior of pollutants require a lot of manpower and cost, and it is difficult to obtain spatially high-resolution data due to limited equipment operation. Recently, research on tracking contaminants using RGB drones has been conducted, but RGB images also have a limitation in that spectral information is limitedly collected. In this study, to supplement the limitations of existing studies, a hyperspectral sensor was mounted on a remote sensing platform using a drone to collect temporally and spatially higher-resolution data than conventional contact measurement. Using the collected spatio-temporal hyperspectral images, the tracer concentration was calculated and the transverse dispersion coefficient was derived. It is expected that by overcoming the limitations of the drone platform through future research and upgrading the dispersion coefficient calculation technology, it will be possible to detect various pollutants leaking into the water system, and to detect changes in various water quality items and river factors.

  • Dynamic positron emission tomography(dPET) is widely used medical imaging modality that can provide both physiological and functional neuro-image for diagnosing various brain disease. However, dPET images have low spatial-resolution and high noise level during spatio-temporal analysis (three-dimensional spatial information + one-dimensional time information), there by limiting clinical utilization. In order to overcome these issues for the spatio-temporal analysis, a novel computational technique was introduced in this paper. The computational technique based on singular value decomposition classifies multiple independent components. Signal components can be distinguished from the classified independent components. The results show that signal to noise ratio was improved up to 30% compared with the original images. We believe that the proposed computational technique in dPET can be useful tool for various clinical / research applications.

  • Land surface temperature is known to be an important factor in understanding the interactions of the ground-atmosphere. However, because of the large spatio-temporal variability, regular observation is rarely made. The existing land surface temperature is observed using satellite images, but due to the nature of satellite, it has the limit of long revisit period and low accuracy. In this study, in order to confirm the possibility of replacing land surface temperature observation using satellite imagery, images acquired by TIR (Thermal Infrared) sensor mounted on UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) are used. The acquired images were transformed from JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) to TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) format and orthophoto was then generated. The DN (Digital Number) value of orthophoto was used to calculate the actual land surface temperature. In order to evaluate the accuracy of the calculated land surface temperature, the land surface temperature was compared with the land surface temperature directly observed with an infrared thermometer at the same time. When comparing the observed land surface temperatures in two ways, the accuracy of all the land covers was below the measure accuracy of the TIR sensor. Therefore, the possibility of replacing the satellite image, which is a conventional land surface temperature observation method, is confirmed by using the TIR sensor mounted on UAV.

  • In this study, the spatiotemporal surface temperature changes were analyzed in the Korean peninsula. The surface temperature variation was estimated using the split window method and NOAA/AVHRR data in 1991, 1995 and 2000. The ranges of differences in temperature between day time and night time were $3-15^{\circ}C$ around the peninsula. The differences in seasonal variations and yearly fluctuations in big cities were lower than those in rural areas and showed clearly the effects of the urbanization. The characteristics of urban heat affects were further determined based on the day and night time temperature comparison on Busan metropolitan area between these periods. Finally, the future use of this technology was suggested for the urban environmental planning.

  • Recently, with the development of computer vision and deep learning technology, research on human action recognition has been actively conducted for video analysis, video surveillance, interactive multimedia, and human machine interaction applications. Diverse techniques have been introduced for human action understanding and classification by many researchers using RGB image, depth image, skeleton and inertial data. However, skeleton-based action discrimination is still a challenging research topic for human machine-interaction. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end skeleton joints mapping of action for generating spatio-temporal image so-called dynamic image. Then, an efficient deep convolution neural network is devised to perform the classification among the action classes. We use publicly accessible UTD-MHAD skeleton dataset for evaluating the performance of the proposed method. As a result of the experiment, the proposed system shows better performance than the existing methods with high accuracy of 97.45%.

  • We present microscopy based hyperspectral imaging system that successively shows high spatial (micrometer) and temporal resolutions (milisecond), and acquired pseudocolor hemoglobin saturation map a result of various image processing techniques can provide additional information such as oxygen transport, abnormal vascularity and therapeutic effects besides structural and physiological measurements in various diseases. To increase understanding of vascular defects several optical methods of imaging for preclinical/clinical assessment have been developed so far. However, they have some limitations for outcoming resolution and user satisfaction level compared to its cost. A hyperspectral imaging system has shown a wide range of vascular characteristics associated with hypervascularity, aberrant angiogenesis or abnormal vascular remodeling in many diseases. This vascular characteristic is considered as a key component to diagnose and detect a type of disease as evidenced by them.

  • The present study aims to develop a real-time surface image velocimeter (SIV) using an Android smartphone. It can measure river surface velocity by using its built-in sensors and processors. At first the SIV system figures out the location of the site using the GPS of the phone. It also measures the angles (pitch and roll) of the device by using its orientation sensors to determine the coordinate transform from the real world coordinates to image coordinates. The only parameter to be entered is the height of the phone from the water surface. After setting, the camera of the phone takes a series of images. With the help of OpenCV, and open source computer vision library, we split the frames of the video and analyzed the image frames to get the water surface velocity field. The image processing algorithm, similar to the traditional STIV (Spatio-Temporal Image Velocimeter), was based on a correlation analysis of spatio-temporal images. The SIV system can measure instantaneous velocity field (1 second averaged velocity field) once every 11 seconds. Averaging this instantaneous velocity measurement for sufficient amount of time, we can get an average velocity field. A series of tests performed in an experimental flume showed that the measurement system developed was greatly effective and convenient. The measured results by the system showed a maximum error of 13.9 % and average error less than 10 %, when we compared with the measurements by a traditional propeller velocimeter.

  • This study evaluated the urban vitality of Daegu metropolitan city in 2018 using emerging geographic data such as spatial big data, Wi-Fi AP(access points) and nighttime light satellite image. The emerging geographic data were used in this research to quantify human activities in the city more directly at various spatial and temporal scales. Three spatial big data such as mobile phone data, credit card data and public transport smart card data were employed to reflect social, economic and mobility aspects of urban vitality while public Wi-Fi AP and nighttime light satellite image were included to consider virtual and physical aspects of the urban vitality. With PCA (Principal Component Analysis), five indicators were integrated and transformed to the urban vitality index at census output area by temporal slots. Results show that five clusters with high urban vitality were identified around downtown Daegu, Daegu bank intersection and Beomeo intersection, Seongseo, Dongdaegu station and Chilgok 3 district. Further, the results unveil that the urban vitality index was varied over the same urban space by temporal slots. This study provides the possibility for the integrated use of spatial big data, Wi-Fi AP and nighttime light satellite image as proxy for measuring urban vitality.
