  • The capacity spectrum method (CSM) is a simple and graphical seismic analysis procedure. Originally, it has been developed for buildings, but now its applicability has been extended to bridge structures. It is based on the capacity curve estimated by pushover analysis and demand spectrum reduced from linear elastic design spectrum by using effective damping or strength reduction factor. In this paper, the inelastic demand spectrum as the reduced demand spectrum is calculated from the linear elastic design spectrum by using the several formulas for the strength reduction factor. The effects of the strength reduction factor for the capacity spectrum analysis are evaluated for 3 types of symmetric and asymmetric bridge structures. To investigate an accuracy of the CSM which several formulas for strength reduction factor were applied, the maximum displacements estimated by the CSM are compared with the results obtained by nonlinear time history analysis for 8 artificially generated earthquakes. The maximum displacements estimated by the CSM using the SJ formula among the several strength reduction factors provide the most accurate agreement with those calculated by the inelastic time history analysis.

  • 3D time history analysis was performed on vertical shaft-tunnel connection to provide insight into the dynamic stress-strain behavior of the connection considering the effects of soil layers, periodic characteristics and wave direction of earthquakes. MIDAS GTS NX based on FEM (Finite Element Method) was used for this study. From this study, it is revealed that the maximum displacement occurred at the upper part of the connection when the long period seismic waves propagate through the tunnel direction in soft ground. Also, stress concentration occurs due to different behaviors of vertical shaft and tunnel, and the stress concentration could be influence for safety on the connection. The results of this study could be useful for the seismic performance design of vertical shaft-tunnel connection.

  • Nonlinear pushover analysis is used to evaluate the earthquake response of building structures. To accurately predict the inelastic response of a structure, the prescribed story load profile should be able to describe the earthquake force profile which actually occurs during the time-history response of the structure. In the present study, a new modal combination method was developed to predict the earthquake load profiles of building structures. In the proposed method, multiple story load profiles are predicted by combining the modal spectrum responses multiplied by the modal combination factors. Parametric studies were performed far moment-resisting frames and walls. Based on the results. the modal combination factors were determined according to the hierarchy of each mode affecting the dynamic responses of structures. The proposed modal combination method was applied to prototype buildings with and without vertical irregularity. The results showed that the proposed method predicts the actual story load profiles which occur during the time-history responses of the structures.

  • This paper highlights research being conducted to identify ground motion and structural characteristics that control the response of concentrically braced frames using hysteretic damper, unbonded brace, and to identify improved design procedures and code provisions. The focus of this paper is on the seismic response of six story concentrically braced frames utilizing hysteretic damper. A brief discussion is provided regarding the mechanical properties of such braces and the benefit of their use. Results of detailed nonlinear dynamic analyses are then examined for specific cases to characterize the effect on key response parameters of structural configurations and proportions.

  • The inelastic response characteristics of the standard school buildings depending on selection of hysteresis models are reviewed. Three earthquake records of El-centre, Santa-Monica, Taft and three artificial earthquake records in accordance with Korea standard are used and the inelastic response characteristics such as story shear force, story drift ratio, story displacement, hinge distribution state are reviewed with various hysteresis models. As results, story shear force is increased by maximum 60% according to hysteresis model. And Story drift ratio is increased by maximum 42% according to hysteresis model. And The result with clough model shows the maximum hinge distribution state.

  • It is very important that predict the inelastic seismic behavior exactly for seismic performance evaluation of a building in the performance based seismic design. Evaluation method of seismic performance based on the pushover analysis reflected in PBSE was developed by some researchers. For the evaluation of inelastic global and local seismic responses by pushover analysis exactly. lateral load distribution should be adjusted and reflected the dynamic characteristics of structural system and various seismic ground motions. And performance point should be determined based on the evaluation of reasonable deformation capacity of a building more exactly. An effective method based on the improved the adaptive lateral load distribution and the equivalent responses of a multistory building is proposed in this study to efficiently estimate the accurate inelastic seismic responses. The proposed method can be used to evaluate the seismic performance for the global inelastic behavior of a building and to accurately estimate its local inelastic seismic responses. In order to demonstrate the accuracy and validity of this method, inelastic seismic responses estimated by the proposed method are compared with those obtained from other analytical methods.

  • This study intends to analytically evaluate the vibration serviceability of the bridges for each long-span type having the same span length and road width using the Meister vibration sensation curve. With MIDAS, a structural analysis program, bridges were modeled using the girders as the frame element and slabs as the plate element. The transient analysis was performed using the moving loads of the design vehicles. This study presents the analytical process of reviewing the vibration serviceability during the design of long-span bridges. It involves the comparison of the vibration serviceability of different bridge types by applying the lagging-behind and acceleration amplitude from transient analysis to Meister curve. The result confirms that the process is appropriate.

  • A half portion of Korean railway bridges depends on the type of steel plate girder bridge. Since these bridges have been built in the early stage of Korean economical boom, numerous maintenance effort suffers from aging and progressive degradation issues at present. In accordance with these efforts, this paper would like to address the detailed analyses of thin steel plates with bolts in order to simulate the connection regions of steel plate girder bridge. The fundamental modal analysis, transient dynamic analysis with 3D piezoelectric element in open circuit loop and signal process with aids of TOF(time of flight) and WC(wavelet coefficient) are extensively discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate seismic capacity of seismically isolated building according to the earthquake motion record selection method. To analyze the seismic behavior, 20-story building is designed, which has base isolation system. The using earthquake motion record were selected by two categories. The one is a proposed earthquake record according to soil type and response spectrum shape, and the other is a well known earthquake events such as El Centro (1940). The time history analysis results of base isolation buildings be induced difference results according to each ground motion records. Therefore detailed guidelines for the ground motion records selection method must be prepared. And the response of isolation story displacement and shear force show good seismic performance in consideration of the proposed earthquake records.
