  • The capacity spectrum method (CSM) can be used to simply estimate the maximum displacement response of the nonlinear structures. To evaluate seismic performance of multi-span bridges using the CSM, the representative response for structural system should be derived from the multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) responses by using the equivalent single-degree-of-freedom (ESDOF) method. The ESDOF method is used to calculate the capacity curve of the structural system from the pushover curves of all piers or structural members estimated by the pushover analysis. In order to evaluate an accuracy of ESDOF methods used in the CSM, the maximum displacements estimated by the CSM incorporating the several ESDOF methods are compared to those by the inelastic time-history analysis for several artificial earthquakes corresponding to the design spectrum.

  • The purpose of this research is to introduce the simplified equivalent frame model for the equivalent lateral force procedure, the response spectrum procedure and nonlinear procedure according to ASCE7-10 in order to reduce the time of performance and reasonably evaluate the effect of applying the damping system with the various conditions for the analysis and the variable. In this research, the seismic performance assessment and the design of the damping system were conducted through the nonlinear time history analysis based on the performance based seismic design in ASCE7-10 in regard to applying the damping system to apartment buildings which is lately issued. The optimal design based on the 75% of seismic base shear was performed for an apartment building. The seismic performance assessment were conducted to check the safety of the building, and the economic evaluation was performed by comparing the amount of resource for the optimal designed building with the amount of resource for the original building. In addition, hysteresis dampers was applied to the apartment building, and the suggested equivalent frame model was performed using the damping system design in ASCE7-10, then its control effects were proved in the full scale model of the apartment building which was used in this research.

  • This study presents the emergency assessment method about seismic safety of cable-supported bridges using seismic acceleration sensors installed on the primary structural elements of them. The structural models of bridges are updated iteratively to make their dynamic characteristics to be similar to those of real bridges based on the comparison of their natural frequencies with those of real bridges estimated from acceleration data measured at ordinary times by the seismic acceleration sensor. The displacement at the location of each seismic acceleration sensor is derived by seismic analysis using design earthquake, and the peak value of them is determined as the disaster management criteria in advance. The displacement time history is calculated by the double integration of the acceleration time history which is recorded at each seismic acceleration sensor and filtered by high cut(low pass) and low cut(high pass) filters. Finally, the seismic safety is evaluated by the comparison of the peak value in calculated displacement time history with the disaster management criteria determined in advance. The applicability of proposed methodology is verified by performing the seismic safety assessment of 12 cable-supported bridges using the acceleration data recorded during Gyeongju earthquake.

  • In the Pohang Earthquake in 2017, considerable damage to non-structural elements, such as ceiling systems, exterior finishes, and curtain walls, was reported; thus, the seismic designs of non-structural elements are important. In this study, the modal characteristics of a ceiling system were investigated through the impact hammer test. The frequency and damping ratio according to the length of the hanger bolt were identified. In addition, collision experiments were conducted to obtain the impact duration for exactly considering the impact effects of the ceiling against a wall or other adjacent elements. Based on the identified dynamics and impact duration of the ceiling system, the seismic responses of the ceiling system were obtained numerically in case of collision. Numerical simulation results show that the impact load tends to increase with the clearance between the ceiling and adjacent elements, and is not correlated with the length of the hanger bolt.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the application of various numerical models and frequency contents of earthquakes on the performances of the reactor containment building (RCB) in a nuclear power plant (NPP) equipped with an advanced power reactor 1400. Two kinds of numerical models are developed to perform time-history analyses: a lumped-mass stick model (LMSM) and a full three-dimensional finite element model (3D FEM). The LMSM is constructed in SAP2000 using conventional beam elements with concentrated masses, whereas the 3D FEM is built in ANSYS using solid elements. Two groups of ground motions considering low- and high-frequency contents are applied in time-history analyses. The low-frequency motions are created by matching their response spectra with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission 1.60 design spectrum, whereas the high-frequency motions are artificially generated with a high-frequency range from 10Hz to 100Hz. Seismic responses are measured in terms of floor response spectra (FRS) at the various elevations of the RCB. The numerical results show that the FRS of the structure under low-frequency motions for two numerical models are highly matched. However, under high-frequency motions, the FRS obtained by the LMSM at a high natural frequency range are significantly different from those of the 3D FEM, and the largest difference is found at the lower elevation of the RCB. By assuming that the 3D FEM approximates responses of the structure accurately, it can be concluded that the LMSM produces a moderate discrepancy at the high-frequency range of the FRS of the RCB.

  • In centralized control system, complicated control systems including sensors, power supply and dampers should be required to satisfy the target response of large-scale structures. The practical applications of the centralized control system, however, is very difficult due to high order finite element model of structures, uncertainty of models, and limitations of the excitation system. In this study, the decentralized response-dependent MR damper of which magnetic field is automatically modulated according to the displacement or velocity transferred to the damper without any sensing and computing systems. this decentralized response-dependent MR damper are investigated according to the ranges of relative magnitude between the control force of MR damper and the story shear force of structures by nonlinear time history analysis. Finally, its performance is compared with centralized LQR algorithm which is used in general centralized control theory for a three story building structure.

  • This study proposed the aseismic design concept for underground space based on site response analysis and laboratory tests. The results of this study showed that the location of the control points of input motions such as design response spectra and time history of acceleration and the assumption of bedrock properties such as elasticity or rigidity play an important role in aseismic design of underground space. Therefore, the appropriate ground response model among models applying motions such as free surface motion, bedrock motion, or bedrock outcropping motion must be utilized to provide reasonable boundary conditions of underground space under earthquake loading and practical aseismic design.

  • Single-mode spectral analysis method is usually applied to a small-scale bridges with the simple geometric shape and uses only fundamental period to estimate the elastic earthquake forces and the displacements of the substructure. On the other hand, multi-mode spectral analysis method may be used instead if the possibilities of potential damage are developed when considering significance, scale, and geometric shape of briages. Since the dynamic responses of bridge can be significantly different depending on the modeling techniques for the restraint and support conditions etc, it may be misled to the unexpected results. In this study the dynamic analysis program which can model and analyze the bridge as a two- or three-dimensional framed structure is developed and verified with the results of other reliable program. Using this program together with the post processor, the designer can easily and readily obtain the reponses(moments, base shears, and displacements)of bridges necessary to design purpose. And further from the analysis results according to the variations of type, scale, and restraint and supprot conditions of bridges including sectional properties, applications of the effective and desirable seismic design are presented.

  • Damage of infrastructures by an earthquake causes the secondary damage through the world at large more than the damage of the structures themselves. Amomg them, underground utility tunnel structures comes under the special life line: communication, gas, electricity and etc. and it has a need to evaluate its fragility to an earthquake exactly. Therefore, the destruction ability according to peak ground acceleration of earthquakes for the underground utility tunnels is evaluated in this paper. As an input ground motion for evaluating seismic fragilities, real earthquakes and artificial seismic waves which could be generated in the Korean peninsula are used. And as a seismic analysis method, response displacement method and time history analyzing method are used. An limit state which determines whether destruction is based on the bending moment and shear deformation. A method used to deduct seismic fragility curve is method of maximum likelihood and the distribution function is assumed to the log normal distribution. It could evaluate the damage of underground utility tunnels to an earthquake and could be applied as basic data for seismic design of underground utility tunnel structures.

  • In this study, the vibration control effect according to the installation location of the sky-bridge and the difference of natural periods of the connected buildings has been investigated. To this end, 40-story and 50-story building structures connected by a sky-bridge were used as example structures and the equivalent modeling method was used. Boundary nonlinear time history analyses were performed using El Centro and Taft earthquakes to investigate the dynamic behavior of the example structures and vibration control effect of the sky-bridge. Based on numerical results, it has been shown that displacement responses can be effectively controlled as the installation floor of the sky-bridge increases and acceleration responses can be effectively reduced when the sky-bridge is installed on the mid-stories of the example building.
