  • A great deal of attention has been directed recently at the roles played by lipidperoxides in the mediation of pathogenesis and complications of various disease. In view of the strong inhibitory activity of Brazilin on the lipidperoxidation, we examined the effect of Brazilin on the lipidperoxidation in diabetic states. Brazilin inhibited the lipidperoxidation of liver mitochondrial and microsomal fraction in alloxan-induced diabetic ICR mice in the dose and time dependent manner. In the light of the present results, further elucidation of the inhibitory activities of Brazilin on the liver and blood plasma is warrented.

  • In this study, a time-dependent constitutive model was developed for cohesive soils. A damage law was included in the model, using which the undrained creep behavior was predicted. The mathematical and physical derivation of the model was performed in the sense of adopting only few model parameters. The model prediction was well agreed with the experimental result of creep testing including creep rupture.

  • This paper deals with a numerical model for the time-dependent analysis of steel and concrete composite beams with partial shear connection. A linear partial interaction theory is adopted in formulation of structural slip behavior, and the effect of concrete creep and shrinkage are considered. The proposed model is effective in simulating the slip behavior, combined with concrete creep and shrinkage, of multi-span continuous composite beams. Finally, correlation studies and several parameter studies are conducted with the objective to establish the validity of the proposed model.

  • Interfacial properties between rock mass and shotcrete play a significant role in the transmission of loads from the ground to shotcrete. These properties have a major effect on the behaviours of rock mass and shotcrete. They, however, have merely been considered in most of numerical analyses, and little care has been taken in identifying them. This paper aimed to identify interfacial properties including cohesion, tension, friction angle, shear stiffness, and normal stiffness, through direct shear tests as well as interface normal compression tests for shotcrete/rock cores obtained from a tunnel sidewall. Mechanical properties such as compressive strength and elastic modulus were also measured to compare them with the time-dependent variation of interfacial properties. Based on the experiments, interfacial properties between rock and shotcrete showed a significant time-dependent variation similar to those of its mechanical properties. In addition, the time-dependent behaviours of interfacial properties could be well regressed through exponential and logarithmic functions of time.

  • Recently, building of long span bridge is increasing and cable stayed bridges have large portion in civil projects. As the spans of bridges become longer, steel cable-stayed bridges have been constructed mainly for slim structure. But in many case, pylons are constructed by concrete for the stability of structures and the economy. Concrete is greatly influenced by the long-term behavior like creep and drying shrinkage, so analysis of stress redistribution and structural change in construction is required. In this study, as a cable stayed bridge with concrete pylon, Incheon Bridge is analyzed by nonlinear FEM analysis program RCAHEST. Through this analysis, time dependent effect of concrete pylon to whole cable stayed bridge system is studied.

  • Despite a number of advantages of reinforced earth walls over conventional concrete retaining walls, there exit concerns over long-term residual deformation when they are subjected to repeated and/or cyclic loads, especially when used as part of permanent structures. In view of these concerns, in this paper time-dependant deformation characteristics of geosynthetic reinforced modular block walls under sustained anuor repeated loads were investigated using reduced-scale model tests. The results indicated that a sustained or repeated load can yield appreciable magnitude of residual deformation, and that the residual deformations are influenced not only by the loading characteristics but by the mechanical properties of geogrid. It is also found that the preloading technique can be effectively used in controlling residual deformations of reinforced soils subjected to sustained and/or repeated loads.

  • This study examined the time-dependent effects of changes in private education on the trajectories of academic achievement among early adolescents. Five-wave data was employed from the KYPS; the participants being 2844 (1524 boys, 1320 girls). All were 4th graders in 2004 and became 8th graders in 2008. Latent growth curve model indicated that academic achievement significantly decreased over the five time points, but there were significant individual differences as well. Participants who reported higher initial levels of academic achievement tended to decrease in academic achievement more slowly over time compared to participants who reported lower levels of initial academic achievement. The effects of private education on academic achievement were at their most powerful when participants were in the 4th grade. Private educational experiences among 6th graders had relatively less influence upon the academic achievement of 7th graders.
