Design of Information Appliances Based on User's Preference - in the Case of Information Retrieval Method for Pedestrians' Navigation - (정보기기 디자인에 있어서 사용자의 감성을 고려한 콘텐츠 개발방법 - 보행자의 이동지원을 목적으로 한 감성정보검색을 사례로 -)

  • This study proposes an information retrieval method reflecting the user's preferences based on the fuzzy set theory to develop information contents which support pedestrian's navigation. Firstly, the research evaluated subjects' preferences on commercial spaces set to a hypothetical destination. Also it surveyed the causal relationship between the visual characteristics and the emotional characteristics to propose methods of Navigation Knowledge Base (NKB). The NKB was composed of three elements; 1. the correlation model between emotional characteristics, 2. the causal relationship between visual characteristics and emotional characteristics, 3. the transformation model between visual characteristics and the physical characteristics. Secondly, this study classified the pedestrian's destination search into 4 types with his or her preferences and the time conditions limited during navigation. For each type it presented the Destination Search Algorithm (DSA). Finally, the research simulated the destination search in 4 navigation types using NKB and DSA and verified the availability of the information retrieval method reflecting pedestrian's preferences. In conclusion, the proposed information search method will be applied to reflect the user's preferences to develop information appliances.

Effects of target types and retinal eccentricity on visual search (시각탐색에서 표적 유형과 망막 이심율 효과)

  • Two experiments were conducted to investigate effects of target types and retinal eccentricity on the search of a target while both target and background stimuli were static or moving. A visual search task was used in both experiments. The retinal eccentricity was determined by five concentric circles increasing by the unit of 1.6 and the target was different from the background stimuli in either orientation(orientation target) or a distinctive feature(feature target). In Experiment 1 where both the target and background stimuli were presented statically, an interaction between retinal eccentricity arid target type was found. While search time of the orientation target was not affected by the retinal eccentricity, that of the feature target increased as the retinal eccentricity increased. In Experiment 2 where all stimuli were moving, the interaction effect was also found. But the reason was not the same as that in Experiment 1. In the moving condition, while the search time of the orientation target decreased consistently as the retinal eccentricity increased, that of the feature target was not affected by the retinal eccentricity. The implications and limitations of the present results were discussed with respects to the real world situations such as driving cars or flying airplanes.

시각 주목 정보에 기반한 자율 가상 캐릭터의 인지 메모리 설계

  • 프로그램된 정보를 사용하는 자율 가상 캐릭터는 항상 반복된 패턴 행동을 하기 때문에 사용자가 흥미를 잃는 경우가 많고 현실성도 떨어진다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위해, 자율 가상캐릭터가 자율적으로 인지한 정보를 저장하고 저장한 정보를 활용하여 상황에 맞는 행동을 수행할 수 있는 메모리 체계를 제안한다. 본 논문은 자율 가상 캐릭터가 시각 주목으로 인지한 정보를 저장하고 관리하는 메모리 체계의 모델을 제시한다. 메모리 용량을 효율적으로 사용할 수 있도록 게임 환경에 적합한 빠른 시각 주목 알고리즘을 연구하여 중요하고 눈에 띄는 정보만 저장한다. 자율 가상 캐릭터의 인지 메모리를 크게 시각 기억와 공간 관계 기억 구조로 구성한다. 시각 기억은 쿼드그래프로 구현된 저장 구조에 인지한 정보를 저장한다. 공간 관계 기억은 공간 관계 그래프 이론을 기반으로 객체들간의 방향과 거리 정보를 저장한다. 본 논문의 제안 방법을 가상 환경에서 실험한 결과, 자율 가상 캐릭터는 시각 주목 기능으로 3차원 가상 환경의 동적 객체까지 감지하여 자율적으로 정보를 주목하여 저장하고 있음을 확인했다. 자율 가상캐릭터는 메모리 정보를 활용하여 목표 객체를 빠르게 탐색하며 길찾기에 필요한 경로 계획을 수립한다. 성능면에서는 주목맵만들기 위한 특징맵으로 가장 주목할 수 있는 특징들로 구성하여 처리속도가 1.6배 이상 향상됨을 확인했다.

  • 최근 음악을 재생할 수 있는 다양한 소형기기들의 발전이 이루어지고 있다. 휴대용 음향기기에서 곡을 탐색할 경우, 곡 탐색 습관의 특성상 눈으로 확인하지 않고 손을 사용한 촉각적 피드백만을 이용하는 것이 대부분이다. 또한 곡 탐색 과제는 청각적인 표적을 찾는 것임에 반하여, 지금까지 청각적인 단서에 대한 연구의 대부분은 시각적인 표적을 찾는 것에 집중되어 있었다. 본 연구에서는 청각적인 표적을 탐색하는데 있어 청각적 위치 단서가 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 주어진 곡 리스트를 암기한 후, 화면에 제시되는 표적 곡을 탐색하는데 있어 청각적인 위치 단서가 있는 좌우 조건, 가운데 조건, 그리고 무음 조건의 경우에 따른 곡 탐색의 정확률과 반응 시간을 측정하였다. 과제는 정상과 오류 두 가지 유형으로 구성되었다. 결과는 청각적인 위치 정보가 포함된 좌우 조건이 정상 과제와 오류 과제에 있어서 가운데 조건과 무음 조건에 비하여 모두 유의미하게 짧은 반응 시간을 보였다. 본 실험 결과는 휴대용 음향기기뿐만 아니라 위성항법장치(GPS), 가상환경(Virtual Environment) 등과 같이 청각적인 표적을 찾아야 하는 과제를 포함하는 환경에도 적용될 수 있을 것이다.

Analysis of Elementary School Students' Visual Representation Competence for Shadow Phenomenon (그림자 현상에 대한 초등학생의 시각적 표상 능력)

  • In previous study, visual representation competence taxonomy (VRC-T), which is composed of two dimensions, was developed for the purpose of promoting effective visual representation use and research in science education. In this study, elementary school students' visual representation competence for shadow phenomenon was investigated using VRC-T. In terms of visual representation competence, 'interpretation' was the highest score, followed by 'construction' and 'integration'. It also showed that students' visual representation competence was not high even after learning shadow-related units in the regular curriculum. On the other hand, text-based scientific knowledge was not correlated with all categories of visual representation competence. This indicates that there is a need to emphasize visual representation more in science class. Finally, hierarchical relationship among cognitive processes of VRC-T was explored according to ordering theory. If the tolerance level is somewhat loosened, a linear hierarchical relationship was found between the six cognitive processes. This suggests that VRC-T is an analytical framework that can be useful when designing assessment tools, tasks, and science class activities to enhance visual representation competence.

Exploring the Effect of SW Programming Curriculum and Content Development Model for Non-majors College Students : focusing on Visual Representation of SW Solutions (비전공자 SW 프로그래밍 교육과정 및 콘텐츠 개발 모형의 효과성 탐색: SW 해결안의 시각적 표현을 중심으로)

  • In the future society where ICT-based digital convergence creates new value, collaborative skills among experts in various fields and SW based problem solving ability is more emphasized. Non-SW specialists are required to have SW based communication skills to effectively collaborate with SW experts to solve their problems. Therefore, SW programming curriculum for non-major college students should be different from the existing programming education for SW-majors aiming at a high level of coding ability. It is also known that diagram-based visual representation is helpful for productive communication and collaboration. In this study, we defined the SW education objectives for the non-majors as cultivating the visual programming ability for SW based problem solving. In order to accomplish this, we explored SW programming curriculum and content development model for non-majors focusing on visual representation of SW solutions. The results of this paper will help to provide appropriate SW learning model for non-majors and to cultivate practical SW capabilities.

  • This study reviews various aspects of design of user interfaces in interactive information retrieval systems. Specially the study examines, 1) search related interfaces such as query processing, search strategies, and multilingual processing, and 2) browsing related interfaces such as document browsing and search result browsing. The main goals of this review are to characterize user interface techniques in information retrieval systems and to suggest potential future research direction and challenges.

Analysis of the relationship between e-brand personalities and visual attributes (웹페이지 디자인의 이브랜드 개성 구축을 위한 시각조형특성 분석)

  • The brand personality of online products and services is know as its e-brand personality. Although, in the competitive conditions of online markets, e-brand personality is agreed to be an important factor, few studies have suggested how to establish e-brand personality through the visual design of web sites. This study identifies and verifies causal relationships between the visual attributes of web pages and e-brand personalities. The first identifies four major dimensions of e-brand personality on diverse web sites. The second uses 52 experimental home pages to identify key visual attributes associated with those four personality dimensions. The third is a confirmatory study with 16 experimental web sites that verifies causal relationships between visual attributes and e-brand personalities. The results show that two visual attributes, 'simplicity' and 'cohesion,' help to establish a 'bold' personality. Three attributes, 'contrast,' 'density,' and 'regularity,' affect whether a site has an 'analytical' personality. 'Contrast,' 'cohesion,' 'density,' and 'regularity' all influence whether a web site is perceived to have a 'friendly' personality. 'Regularity' and 'balance' were expected to affect the 'sophisticated' personality dimension, but no such impact was observed. The paper concludes with a discussion of implications, limitations, and future research directions.

  • This study explored the Eye Movement, the horizontal and vertical flow of vision, and genetic, cultural and empirical schema, and the differentiation of the visual system of the cerebrum through the engineering psychological or the cognitive neuroscientific experiments measuring Eye Movement to maximize the efficiency of the Public Sign System in the urban environment. Accordingly, the study derived an algorithm that can bring out the most efficient visual design measurement by using EMR test and bitmap counting method. The scientific test data in this study will show the existence of the momentum of differentiation and visual sampling by the Schema and Sensory Qualia of the human.

Information-Seeking Pathways by Mothers in the Context of Their Children's Health (어린이 건강과 관련한 어머니들의 정보탐색 경로)

  • Today, with countless health information being accessible through online and offline, the public has been able to explore health-related information in various ways. The current study focuses on the information-seeking behavior of the mothers who actively explore information related to the health of their healthy infants (aged between 0 and 3 years). The researcher had conducted in-depth interviews of 24 American, Korean, and Korean immigrant mothers living in the United States, and then analyzed the sequential order of the information sources that they have used to search for the health-related information about their children. The current research highlights that the mothers' information-seeking pathways and searched topics tended to differ in accordance with their child(ren)'s health conditions (e.g., ill vs. healthy). For instance, regarding the information sources used, more diverse health information sources (e.g., public libraries, government health agencies, daycare teachers) were used when their child(ren) was not ill. In addition, when a child was ill, mothers were likely to focus on information about specific diseases or symptoms first, whereas when the child was healthy, they used to explore information on various health topics such as growth and development, nutrition and diets, parenting, and so on. Based on the results, implications for the information professionals are discussed when designing and providing health-related information services to mothers of healthy infants and toddlers.
