Objective : Multisensory integration (MSI) is the essential process to use diverse sensory information for cognitive task or execution of motor action. Especially, visual and somatosensory integration is critical for motor behavior and coordination. This study was designed to explain spatial and temporal characteristics of visual and somatosensory integration by neurophysiological research method that identifies the time course and brain location of the SI process. Methods : Electroencephalography (EEG) and event-related potential (ERP) is used in this study in order to observe neural activities when integrating visual and tactile input. We calculate the linear summation (SUM) of visual-related potentials (VEPs) and somatosensory-related potentials (SEPs), and compared the SUM with simultaneously presented visual-tactile ERPs(SIM) Results : There were significant differences between the SIM and SUM in later time epochs (about 200-300ms) at contralateral somatosensory areas (C4) and occipital cortices (O1&O2). The amplitude of the SIM was mathematically larger than the summed signals, implying that the integration made some extra neural activities. Conclusion : This study provides some empirical neural evidence of that multisensory integration is more powerful than just combing two unisensory inputs in the brain and ERP data reveals neural signature relating to multisensory integrative process. Since this study is preliminary pilot study, larger population and criteria are needed for level of the significance. Further study is recommended to consider issues including effect of internally-driven attention and laterality of interaction to make the evidence by this study solid.

The extracellular matrix, which provides the structural and biochemical support of surrounding cells, is a cell physiological modulator that controls cell division and differentiation. In the bio sector, the company produces Scapold, a three-dimensional support for tissue engineering, and cultivates stem cells in the produced Scapold to be transplanted into animals to assess tissue regeneration. This depends on components such as collagen in the tissue. Therefore, it is very important to identify the inclusion rate and distribution of components in the tissue, and the data are obtained by analyzing the color of the dyed tissue image. The process from image collection to analysis is costly, and the data collected and analyzed are managed in different formats by different research institutions. Therefore, data integration management and analysis results search are not being performed. In this paper, we establish a database that can manage relevant bigdata in an integrated manner, and propose a bio-image integrated management and retrieval system that can be searched based on color, an important analytical measure in this field of study.
Retinal ganglion cells transmit visual scene as an action potential to visual cortex through optic nerve. Conventional recording method using single intra- or extra-cellular electrode enables us to understand the response of specific neuron on specific time. Therefore, it is not possible to determine how the nerve impulses in the population of retinal ganglion cells collectively encode the visual stimulus with conventional recording. This requires recording the simultaneous electrical signals of many neurons. Recent advances in multi-electrode recording have brought us closer to understanding how visual information is encoded by population of retinal ganglion cells. We examined how ganglion cells act together to encode a visual scene with multi-electrode array (MEA). With light stimulation (on duration: 2 sec, off duration: 5 sec) generated on a color monitor driven by custom-made software, we isolated three functional types of ganglion cell activities; ON (35.0$\pm$4.4%), OFF (31.4$\pm$1.9%), and ON/OFF cells (34.6$\pm$5.3%) (Total number of retinal pieces = 8). We observed that nearby neurons often fire action potential near synchrony (< 1 ms). And this narrow correlation is seen among cells within a cluster which is made of 6~8 cells. As there are many more synchronized firing patterns than ganglion cells, such a distributed code might allow the retina to compress a large number of distinct visual messages into a small number of ganglion cells.
By their rapid and periodic actions, the cilia of the human respiratory tract play an important role in clearing inhaled noxious particles. Based on the automated image-processing technique, we studied the method analyzing ciliary beat frequency (CBF) objectively and quantitatively. Microscopic ciliary images were transformed into digitized gray ones through an image-grabber, and from these we extracted signals for CBF. By means of a FFT, maximum peak frequencies were detected as CBFs in each partitioned block for the entire digitized field. With these CBFs, we composed distribution maps visually showing the spatial distribution of CBFs. Through distribution maps of CBF, the whole aspects of CBF changes for cells and the difference of CBF of neighboring cells can be easily measured and detected. Histogram statistics calculated from the user-defined polygonal window can show the local dominant frequency presumed to be the CBF of a cell or a crust the region includes.
Cadherin-Catenin complex is thought to play an essential role in the transmission of force at adherens junction. Due to the lack of proper tools to visualize and detect mechanical force signals, the underlying mechanism by which the cadherin-catenin complex regulates force transmission at intercellular junctions remains elusive. In this study, we visualize cadherin-mediated force transmission using an engineered α-Catenin sensor based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer. Our results reveal that α-catenin is a key force transducer in cadherin-mediated mechanotransduction at cell-cell junctions. Thus, our finding will provide important insights for studying the effects of chemical and physical signals on cell-cell communication and the relationship between physiological and pathological phenomena.

When a vision chip for edge detection using CMOS process is designed, there is a necessity to implement local light adaptive-function for detecting distinctive features of an image at a wide range of light intensities. Local light adaptation is to achive the almost same output level by changing the size of receptive-fields of the local horizontal cell layers according to input light intensities, based on the lateral inhibitive-function of the horizontal cell. Thus, the almost same output level can be obtained whether input light intensities are much or less larger than background. In this paper, the horizontal cells using a resistive network which consists of p-MOSFETs were modeled and analyzed, and the local light adaptive-mechanism of the designed vision chip using the resistive network was verified.
