  • The in-reactor fuel rod support conditions against the fretting wear-induced damage can be evaluated by residual spacer grid spring deflection or rod-to-grid gap. In order to evaluate the impact of fuel design parameters on the fretting wear-induced damage, a simulation methodology of the in-reactor fuel rod supporting conditions as a function of burnup has been developed and implemented in the GRIDFORCE program. The simulation methodology takes into account cladding creep rate, initial spring deflection, initial spring force, and spring force relaxation rate as the key fuel design parameters affecting the in-reactor fuel rod supporting conditions. Based on the parametric studies on these key parameters, it is found that the initial spring deflection, the spring force relaxation rate and cladding creepdown rate are in the order of the impact on the in-reactor fuel rod supporting conditions. Application of this simulation methodology to the fretting wear-induced failure experienced in a commercial plant indicates that this methodology can be utilized as an effective tool in evaluating the capability of newly developed cladding materials and/or new spacer grid designs against the fretting wear-induced damage.

  • To develop the technique for predicting the horizontal displacement of a retaining wall induced by an earthquake, an equation of motion that depicts the retaining wall-soil vibrating system was derived. The resulting differential equation was solved using the Runge-Kutta-Nystr?m method. Considering the pre-mentioned derivation process, the analysis procedures for obtaining horizontal displacement induced by an earthquake were programmed. The core algorithm of the displacement-force relationship, which is the main engine of the developed program, was suggested. Considering the results obtained by adopting the developed program to the assumed retaining wall under an earthquake, the relationships between the time-displacement, time-force, and displacement-force were reasonable. According to the results computed by the program, the displacements to the front direction of the wall occurred, and the displacement per cycle converged after some cycles elapsed. Displacements with a natural period were calculated, which showed that the maximum displacement was observed when the natural frequency was slightly different from the excitation frequency rather than the same values of the two frequencies. This happens because the vibrating system was modeled by two springs with different stiffness.

  • In this study, the variation of track impact factor according to the spring stiffness change rate of sleeper resilience pad was analyzed based on field measurements. In addition, the correlation between field measurement results and 7 million fatigue test results was verified. The fatigue effect diagram of the sleeper resilience pads was presented considering the nonlinear deterioration characteristics of the sleeper resilience pads used for the STEDEF track. Based on the field measurement results, the nonlinear characteristics of the track impact factor for the spring stiffness change rate over 30% of sleeper resilience pad on the track impact factor-track support stiffness diagram were analyzed to be consistent with the fatigue test results.

  • In order to analyze a pile constructed by vibro-hammer, vibrational characteristics of vibro-hammer should be investigated first. Analytical studies were conducted in order to investigate vibrational properties of vibro-hammer. It is thought that the concept of acting the spring force to the pile head should be replaced by the concept of considering the lumped mass of the exciter and the pile. For the situation of free vibration, spring force increase with increase of spring constant and the amplitude is little affected by the spring constant. Also for the situation of free vibration, amplitude is inversely proportional to the increase of mass of the exciter and it can be seen that spring force increase with amplitude by the same ratio. It can be seen that directions of the spring force and displacement are opposite to that of rotating mass.

  • This paper describes the general formulation for the in-plane flexural free vibration analysis of two layered structure by the transfer influence coefficient method. The structure is regared as a distributed mass system with lumped mass and inertia moments, massless linear and rotational springs, and joints elements of releases and rolls at which the displacements are discontinuous in each layer. The results of the simple numerical examples on a personal computer demonstrate the validity of the present method, that is, the numerical high accuracy, the high speed, the flexibility for programming of the present algorithm, compared with the transfer matrix method.

  • This study proposes an analysis model that can reflect the actual behavior of the rail floating track, and the most reasonable model was analyzed through field measurement and numerical analysis. It was analyzed that the current design theory analysis results of rail floating tracks were different from the field measurement results and were not suitable to reflect the actual behavior. In the rail floating track, it was analyzed that the subsidence of the point directly affects the total displacement rather than the displacement due to the bending of the rail. As a result of numerical analysis, it was analyzed that the analysis result of the proposed model, which is a parallel arrangement spring model that does not have a support point directly below the rail, reflects the actual behavior. The analysis model presented in this study can be used to predict track behavior when designing and maintaining rail floating tracks in the future.

  • This study has been carried out in order to improve the rolling problem by enhancing steering stability compared to the 2021 Student Car of the KNUT_EV team for KSAE. Among the various factors affecting steering performances, it was focused on the height of the centroid of weight, the motion ratio, and the spring deflection. In the 2022 Car, a pull rod suspension was used to reduce the height of the centroid of weight and designed with a structure of the rod and rocker to satisfy the target motion ratio. The spring deflection was testified by ADAMS and ABAQUS analysis, and the spring stiffness was selected at 350lb/inch and 450lb/inch for the front and rear wheels, respectively. As a result, the rolling angle of the 2022 Car was reduced compared to the 2021 Car, and the rolling phenomenon was improved.

  • This paper proposes the development of a low frequency electronic hammer drive system that is used to prevent scaling or clogging in the hopper process. The electro-mechanical hammering driving method involves the generation of vibration and impact energy. The operation principles of the electromagnetic hammer were considered by parallel/series spring coefficient analysis and the amount of kinetic energy generated was calculated from the product of the equivalent spring constant, which is coupled with the E core and the gap of between the E core and I core. In addition, the Pulsation Driving algorithm was applied to the proposed electromagnetic hammer to obtain the maximizing kinetic energy. This algorithm was then implemented by a logical AND operation process and micro-controller (atmega128) built in functions with a timer interrupt and PWM generation function. The driving circuit of the electromagnetic hammer was designed using the H-bridge type IGBT circuit. The experimental test was performed by usefulness of the developed electromagnetic hammer systems with the acceleration measurement method. The experimental result showed that the proposed system has good kinetic energy generation performance and can be applied to the hopper process.
