  • A flashlamp pumped Ti: sapphire laser was designed and fabricated in the laboratory. In order to find out the optimum pumping condition, three kinds of discharge circuits of which the pulse width are 10${\mu}s$, 45${\mu}s$, 65${\mu}s$ were designed. The fluorescent energy converter LD-490 of which the fluorescence spectra is coincident to the absorption band of Ti: sapphire was used to improve the laser efficiency. The laser output characteristics for three different concentrations of LD-490 and for three different pumping pulse widths were measured. As a result, the shorter the flashlamp pulse width, the higher the overall efficiency was achieved. When pumping light pulsewidth was 10${\mu}s$, the best efficiency was obtained at the concentration 1.0${\times}10^{-3}$mol/l of LD-490 dye. At lower concentrations the efficiencies were decreased.

  • Unidirectional single-mode operation of a diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser with a planar semimonolithic ring cavity has been demostrated at 1064 nm. The semimonolithic cavity consists of a laser active medium placed in a magnetic field, a crystal quartz plate, and an output coupling mirror. They form an optical diode by acting each part as a Faraday rotator, a reciprocal polarization rotator and a partial polarizer, respectively. An eigenpolarization theory for the cavity configuration was presented and losses for the eigenmodes were calculated. A pump-limited single-mode output power of 155 mW and a slope efficiency of 17% were obtained when the laser was pumped by a 1.2 W, 809 nm diode-laser. A laser linewidth of less than 100 kHz is inferred from a beat note frequency spectrum between two identical laser systems and continous single-mode tuning range was more than 2 GHz.

  • The death rate of pedestrian in car accidents in Korea is 2.5 times higher than the average of OECD countries'. If a system that can detect pedestrians and send alarm to drivers is built and reduces the rate, it is worth developing such a pedestrian detection system (PDS). Since the accident rate in which pedestrians are involved is higher at nighttime than in daytime, the adoption of nighttime PDS is being standardized by big auto companies. However, they are usually using night visions or multiple sensors, which are usually expensive. In this paper we suggest a method for nighttime PDS using single wide dynamic range (WDR) monochrome camera in visible spectrum band. In our experiments, pedestrians were accurately detected if only most edges of pedestrians could be obtained.

  • Pre-emphasizing the speech compensates for falloff at high frequencies. The most common form of pre-emphasis is y(n)=s(n)-A${\cdot}$s(n-1), where A typically lies between 0.9 and 1.0 in voiced signal. And, this value reflects the degree of pre-emphasis and equals R(1)/R(0) in conventional method. This paper proposes a new flattening method to compensate the weaked high frequency components that occur by vocal cord characteristic. We used QMF(Quardrature Mirror Filter) to minimize the output signal distortion. After using the QMF to compensate high frequency components, flattening process is followed by R(1)/R(0) at each frame. Experimental results show that the proposed method flattened the weaked high frequency components effectively than auto correlation method. Therefore, the flattening algorithm will apply in speech signal processing like speech recognition, speech analysis and synthesis.

  • An analytical method for the determination of thyroid hormones in urine samples has been studied by using solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography/diode array detector/electro-spray mass spectrometry. Seven thyroid hormones were successfully separated by gradient elution on the reverse phase Hypersil ODS column (4.6 mm I.D., 100 mm length, particle size $5{\mu}m$) with ammonium formate buffer and acetonitrile, and UV spectra and mass fragment could be confirmed. The extraction recoveries of thyroid hormones in the urine samples (pH 3) were in the range of 89.0-113.1% with solid-phase extraction by C18, followed by elution with 4 ml of methanol/ammonium hydroxide (9 : 1). The calibration curves showed good linearity with the correlation coefficients ($r^2$) varying from 0.992 to 0.998 and the detection limits of all analytes were obtained in the range of 2-4 ng/ml (3.8-13.0 pmol/ml).

  • A buffeting analysis is utilized for the estimation of aerodynamic vulnerability of a cable-stayed bridge due to upcoming wind turbulences. The buffeting analysis requires several input parameters such as structural parameters, aerodynamic parameters, and aero-elastic parameters. This study is motivated to estimate the sensitivity of these parameters on buffeting responses. The Seohae bridge is selected as an example bridge. The investigated parameters consist of the inclination of lift and drag coefficient of stiffening girder section, exponential decay factors of span-wise distributed wind turbulences, roughness length, spectra of wind velocity fluctuation, and structural damping. The buffeting response showed high dependency on the input parameters. As conclusions, the importance of parameter selection is emphasized. A further study is also proposed for more general conclusions.

  • Light absorption coefficient per unit mass of particles, i.e., specific absorption coefficient, is important as one of the main parameters in developing algorithms for ocean color remote sensing. Specific absorption coefficient of chlorophyll ($a^*_{ph}$) and suspended sediment ($a^*_{ss}$) were analyzed with a spectrophotometer using the "wet filter technique" and "Kishino method" for the seawater collected in the Yellow and Mediterranean Sea. An improved data-recovery method for the filter technique was also developed using spectrum slopes. This method recovered the baselines of spectrum that were often altered in the original methods. High $a^*_{ph}({lambda})$ values in the oligotrophic Mediterranean Sea and low values in the Yellow Sea were observed, ranging 0.01 to 0.12 $m^2$/mg at the chlorophyll maximum absorption wavelength of 440 nm. The empirical relationship between $a^*_{ph}$(440nm) and chlorophyll concentrations () was found to fit a power function ($a^*_{ph}$=0.039 $^{-0.369}$), which was similar to Bricaud et al. (1995). Absorption specific coefficients for suspended sediment ($a^*_{ss}$) did not show any relationship with concentrations of suspended sediment. However, an average value of $a^*_{ss}$ ranging 0.005 - 0.08 $m^2$/g at 440nm, was comparable to the specific absorption coefficient of soil (loess) measured by Ahn (1990). The morepronounced variability of $a^*_{ss}$ than $a^*_{ph}$ was determined from the variable mixing ratio values between particulate organic matter and mineral. It can also be explained by a wide size-distribution range for SS which were determined by their specific gravity, bottom state, depth and agitation of water mass by wind in the sea surface.

  • Because the physical properties can be decreased when a Nylon 66/glass fiber composite is injected into a mold over $300^{\circ}C$, a systematic study of the thermal history in the case of re-use is needed. Nylon 66/glass fiber extrudates as a function of the extrusion number were prepared using a twin screw extruder at 305/290/273/268/265/$260^{\circ}C$. The chemical structure, thermal properties, melt index, crystal structure, Izod impact strength, and rheological properties were measured by Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR), melt indexer, DSC, TGA, XRD, Izod impact tester, and dynamic rheometer. The FT-IR spectra indicated that the number of extrusions did not affect the chemical structure. The decrease in molecular weight with increasing extrusion number was confirmed by the melt index and the complex viscosity of extrudates. Based on the DSC and TGA results, the thermal history had no effect on the melting temperature, regardless of the number of extrusions, but the degradation temperature decreased up to $20^{\circ}C$ with increasing extrusion number. The Izod impact strengths of the extrudates were found to decrease with increasing extrusion number. No structural change after extrusion was also confirmed because there was no change in the slope and shape of the G'-G" plot.

  • ECG signals are often contaminated with high-frequency noise such as muscle artifact, power line interference, and others. In the ECG signal processing, especially during a pre-processing stage, numerous noise removal techniques have been used to reduce these high-frequency noise without much distorting the original signal. This paper proposes a new type of digital filter with a continuously variable cutoff frequency to improve the signal quality This filter consists of a cutoff frequency controller (CFC) and variable cutoff frequency lowpass filter (VCF-LPF). From the noisy input ECG signal, CFC produces a cutoff frequency control signal using the signal slew rate. We implemented VCF-LPF based on two new filter design methods called convex combination filter (CCF) and weight interpolation fille. (WIF). These two methods allow us to change the cutoff frequency of a lowpass filter In an arbitrary fine step. VCF-LPF shows an excellent noise reduction capability for the entire time segment of ECG excluding the rising and falling edge of a very sharp QRS complex. We found VCF-LPF very useful and practical for better signal visualization and probably for better ECG interpretation. We expect this new digital filter will find its applications especially in a home health management system where the measured ECG signals are easily contaminated with high-frequency noises .
