Adaptive Service Mode Conversion to Minimize Buffer Space Requirement in VOD Server (주문형 비디오 서버의 버퍼 최소화를 위한 가변적 서비스 모드 변환)

  • Excessive memory buffer requirement in continuous media playback is a serious impediment of wide spread usage of on-line multimedia service. Skewed access frequency of available video files provides an opportunity of re-using the date blocks which has been loaded by one session for later usage. We present novel algorithm which minimizes the buffer requirement in multiple sessions of multimedia playbacks. In continuous media playback originated from the disk, a certain amount of memory buffer is required to synchronize asynchronous disk. Read operation and synchronous playback operation. As aggregate playback bandwodth increases, larger amount of buffer needs to be allocated for this synchronization purpose. The focus of this work is to study the asymptotic behavior of the synchronization buffer requirement and to develop an algorithm coping with this excessive buffer requirement under bandwidth congestioon. We argue that in a large scale continuous media server, it may not be necessary to read the blocks for each session directly from the disk. The beauty of our work lies in the fact that it dynamically adapts to disk utilization of the server and finds the optimal way of servicinh the individual sessions while minimizing the overall buffer space requirement. Optimality of the proposed algorithm is shown by proof. The effectiveness and performance of the proposed scheme is examined via simulation.

  • True VOD 시스템은 클라이언트들이 서비스 요청을 할 때마다 통신망을 통하여 즉시 비디오서비스를 제공할 수 있는 대화형 시스템이다. 그러나 멀티미디어 스트리밍 응용은 비디오나 오디오 클립들이 높은 대역과 긴 재생시간을 요구하기 때문에 많은 서버 및 네트워크 자원을 요구한다. 패칭기법은 클라이언트들의 요청에 대해 미디어 스트림을 멀티캐스트 전송함으로써 요구되는 서버 및 네트워크 자원을 줄이는 동적 멀티캐스트 방법이다. 하지만 패칭은 클라이언트의 요청을 즉시 처리하기 위해 많은 량의 버퍼링을 필요로 하며 높은 디스크 대역을 요구한다. 본 논문에서는 비디오 서버의 입출력 요청을 동적으로 감소시키며, 인기 있는 비디오에 대한 요청을 즉시 처리할 수 있도록 정규채널과 패칭 채널을 예약해 두는 True VOD 시스템을 위한 개선된 패칭 알고리즘을 제안한다.

An Energy-aware Buffer-based Video Streaming Optimization Scheme (에너지 효율적인 버퍼 기반 비디오 스트리밍 최적화 기법)

  • Video streaming applications such as Netflix and Youtube are widely used in our daily life. A DASH based streaming client exploits adaptive bit rate (ABR) method to choose the most appropriate video source representation that the network can support. In this paper we propose a novel energy-aware ABR scheme that adds the ability to monitor energy efficiency in addition to the linear quadratic regulator algorithm we previously introduced. Our trace-driven simulation studies show that our proposed scheme mitigates and shortens re-buffering, resulting in energy savings of mobile devices while preserving the similar QoE compared to the state-of-the-art ABR algorithms.

  • The delivery of multimedia that efficiently adapts its bit-rate to changing network characteristics and conditions is one of the important challenging tasks in the design of today's real-time multimedia streaming systems such as IPTV, Mobile IPTV and so on. In these work, the primary focus is on network congestion, to improve network stability and inter-protocol fairness. However, these existing works have problems which do not support QoE (Quality of Experience), because they did not consider essential characteristics of contents playback such as the media continuity. In this paper, we propose a novel rate control scheme for improving the QoE of multimedia streaming service in the Internet congestion, called NCAR (Network and Client-Aware Rate control), which is based on network-aware congestion control and client-aware flow control scheme. Network-aware congestion control of the NCAR offers an improving reliability and fairness of multimedia streaming, and reduces the rate oscillation as well as keeping high link utilization. Client-aware flow control of NCAR offers a removing the media discontinuity and a suitable receiver buffer allocation, and provides a good combination of low playback delay. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed schemes.

  • PoC(Push-to-talk Over Cellular) is an integrated technology of group voice calls, video calls and internet based multimedia services. If a PoC user can not participate in the PoC session for various reasons such as an emergency situation, lack of battery capacity, then the user can use the PoC Box which has a similar functionality to the MM Box in the MMS(Multimedia Messaging Service). The RTSP(Real-Time Streaming Protocol) method is recommended to be used when there is a transmission session between the PoC box and a terminal. Since the existing VOD service uses a wired network, the packet size of RTSP-based VOD service is huge, however, the PoC service has wireless communication environments which have general characteristics to be used in RTSP method. Packet loss in a wired communication environments is relatively less than that in wireless communication environment, therefore, a buffering latency occurs in PoC service due to a play-out delay which means an asynchronous play of audio & video contents. Those problems make a user to be difficult to find the information they want when the media contents are played-out. In this paper, the following techniques and methods were proposed and their performance and superiority were verified through testing: cross-over dual reception buffering technique, advance partition multi-reception buffering technique, and on-demand multi-reception buffering technique, which are designed for effective picking up of information in media content being transmitted in short amount of time using RTSP when a user searches for media, as well as for reduction in playback delay; and same-priority packetization transmission method and priority-based packetization transmission method, which are media data packetization methods for transmission. From the simulation of functional evaluation, we could find that the proposed multiple receiving buffering and packetizing methods are superior, with respect to the media retrieval inclination, to the existing single receiving buffering method by 6-9 points from the viewpoint of effectiveness and excellence. Among them, especially, on-demand multiple receiving buffering technology with same-priority packetization transmission method is able to manage the media search inclination promptly to the requests of users by showing superiority of 3-24 points above compared to other combination methods. In addition, users could find the information they want much quickly since large amount of informations are received in a focused media retrieval period within a short time.

Cooperative Video Streaming and Active Node Buffer Management Technique in Hybrid CDN/P2P Architecture

  • Recently, hybrid CDN/P2P video streaming architecture is specially designed and deployed to achieve the scalability of P2P networks and the desired low delay and high throughput of CDNs. In this paper, we propose a cooperative video streaming and active node buffer management technique in hybrid CDN/P2P architecture. The key idea of this streaming strategy is to minimize network latency such as jitter and packet loss and to maximize the QoS(quality of service) by effectively and efficiently utilizing the information sharing of file location in CDN's proxy server which is an end node located close to a user and P2P network. Through simulation, we show that the proposed cooperative video streaming and active node buffer management technique based on CDN and P2P network improves the performance of realtime video streaming compared to previous methods.

  • 최근 인터넷 사용자들의 요구는 멀티미디어로 집중되고 있으며 그중 라이브 미디어 스트리밍 서비스에 대한 요구가 증가하고 있다. 라이브 서비스에서는 적절한 시간에 사용자에게 데이터가 도착하는 것이 중요하다. 따라서 라이브의 시간적절성을 충족시켜 줄 효율적이고 신속한 데이터 전달구조와 전송기법이 요구된다. 이에 본 논문에서는 트리와 메시 구조를 혼합한 하이브리드 방식으로 네트워크 자원을 효율적으로 사용하면서 빠른 데이터 전송으로 라이브의 시간적절성을 충족시킬 수 있는 데이터 분할 전송 방식의 P2P(Peer-to-Peer) 오버레이 구조를 제안한다. 제안하는 ToG(Tree of Groups)는 n개의 피어들이 메시로 그룹을 형성하고, 그렇게 형성된 그룹들이 트리를 이루는 구조이다. ToG에서 그룹 내의 각 피어들은 상위그룹의 피어 한 개와 부모-자식으로 연결되어 있어서 그룹 사이에 여러 개의 연결이 존재하게 된다. 따라서 그룹 내에서 어느 한 피어가 그룹을 빠져 나가더라도 상위그룹과의 여러 연결에 의해서 서비스 지속성을 보장 할 수 있다. ToG는 그룹단위로 트리가 형성되기 때문에 피어의 개수가 같을 때 피어단위로 트리를 형성하는 구조보다 트리의 깊이가 줄어든다. 그에 따라 말단에 있는 피어들에게까지 빠른 시간에 데이터가 전달 될 수 있다. ToG의 데이터 전달은 소스로부터 세그먼트가 일정한 값 n으로 나뉘어져 각 피어들에게 전달된다. 세그먼트 조각은 소스로부터 나뉘어져 전송 될 때 책임적으로 전달해야할 피어와 전달 순서가 정해져있고, 데이터 전송 스케줄링을 위한 버퍼 맵 교환은 필요하지 않다.

  • This paper provides the higher user QoS(Quality of Service) by analyzing media service model between server and client in single VoD(Video on Demand) environment and applying it to parallel VoD environment. Media service model is divided into the Client Pull, Server Push, and IPP(Interleaving Pull & Push) model. A server sends data based on client's request in the Client Pull Model. A server one-sidedly sends data without client's request in the Server Pull model. And the WP model unites above two models. For a parallel VoD environment, We built the PMSS system which provides the parallel media streaming services that one client is simultaneously served by several servers. In the single and parallel VoD environment, We compare and analyze the performance of service models with respect to network delay and data size in buffer. In this experiment, we found that IPP service model keeps the least network delay and stable client buffer in the parallel VoD environment. This result shows that PMSS can provide the more quality of service.

  • A network neutrality is the concept that ISP assures users non-discrimination, interconnection, accessibility for ensuring users without control or interference of equal services in the network. But today a network traffic is growing rapidly in sensitive buffering services as P2P service diffusion and mass video stream service. To manage this problem, ISP violates a net neutrality by control, change and interfere with service. And then the debate about net neutrality is happening. Therefore in this paper, we compare and analyze net neutrality principles, concepts, and legislative policy in the native and foreign. Based on this, we suggested the issues and improvement plan of net neutrality guard line.

A Modification of The Fuzzy Logic Based DASH Adaptation Algorithm for Performance Improvement (성능 향상을 위한 퍼지 논리 기반 DASH 알고리즘의 수정)

  • In this paper, we propose a modification of fuzzy logic based DASH adaptation algorithm(FDASH) for seamless media service in time-varying network conditions. The proposed algorithm selects more appropriate bit-rate for the next segment by the modification of the Fuzzy Logic Controller(FLC) and reduces the number of video bit-rate changes by applying Segment Bit-rate Filtering Module(SBFM). Also, we apply the Start Mechanism for clients not to watch the low quality videos in the very beginning stage of streaming service and add the Sleeping Mechanism to avoid any buffer overflow expected. Ultimately, we verified by using NS-3 Network Simulator that the proposed method shows better performance compared to FDASH. According to the experimental results, there is no buffer underflow/overflow within the limited buffer size, which is not guaranteed in FDASH on the other hand. Also, we confirmed that mFDASH has almost the same level of average video quality against FDASH and reduces about 50% of number of video bit-rate changes compared to FDASH in Point-to-Point network and Wi-Fi network.
