  • The scrubber wastewater should be replaced frequently to maintain efficiency. Most chemical companies consign scrubber wastewater, because there are no wastewater treatment facilities. So scrubber wastewater is not frequently replaced because of high treatment cost. For this reason, the most scrubber exhaust gas exceeds the odor emission limit or has a phenomenon that the odor intensity of exhaust gas becomes higher. Therefore we have developed a scrubber wastewater cleaning system consisting of filtration and adsorption processes. The scrubber wastewater cleaning system was applied two chemical companies. We evaluated the water quality and odor reduction effect before and after system application. As a result, scrubber wastewater quality improved by 50% or more, odor reduction efficiency of scrubber exhaust gas improved by 20% or more. And the total operating costs of the scrubber could be reduced by 40% or more.

  • There has been increased amount of atmospheric pollutants including NOx and SOx which cause acid rain and photochemical smog as a result of increased use of fossil fuels. In order to reduce the amount of pollutants produced by fossil fuel, wet scrubber system is introduced in this experiment. Wet scrubber system is applied to a diesel engine (3,298 cc) and the amount of smoke is measured before and after the application in terms of aspect ratio, filling rate, and flow rate. The result showed a lot of smoke reduction when wet scrubber system was applied, and also the aspect ratios and water spray flow rate were the important factors to improve smoke reduction.

  • Aiming at the treatment of large volumes of gas with a low concentration of poorly water soluble VOC(Volatile Organic Compound), a new system is proposed: the combination absorption tower/bioreactor. In the scrubber part of the bioscrubbing system, the contaminating compounds are absorbed in a aqueous phase. The contaminated scrubbing liquid is transported to the bioreactor, where the compounds are biodegraded by aerobic microorganisms (mainly to carbon dioxide, water, and biomass). In this study, separation of a volatile organic compound(VOC) out of a waste gas stream has been carried out using a re-cyclable high boiling point extrant(HBE). The liquid stream containing a high boiling point entrant(HBE) scrubs the gas stream in a direct gas-liquid countercurrent contacting operation in a packed tower for the removal of said component from the gaseous stream. A packed-bed column using Pall Ring was set up in order to simulate practical conditions for the scrubbing tower. The liquid stream transported to the bioreactor is recovered and recycled to the scrubber. The model gas, which contained 400 mg/$\textrm{m}^3$ of toluene, at a rate of 100 L/min, flowed into the packed column where the scrubbing liquid trickled over the packing in countercurrent to the rising gas at 10~15L/min. The bioscrubber designed for large volume air streams containing VOCs showed removal efficiency up to 80% in an optimum operating conditions during the tests fer removing toluene from an air stream by scrubbing the air stream with HBE.

  • DIWS system was introduced to treat HCl gas from the scrubber of iron and steel industry according as the regulation of air quality is expected to be changed to 2ppm. pH of condensed water at stack was increased to 6.0. While 13.3ppm of inflow HCl was introduced to DIWS system, the average exhaust gas was 0.43ppm with 96.9% of removal efficiency. Compared with HCl data of TMS, the stable removal efficiency was shown in DIWS system, but the phenomenon of data hunting was also observed with different types of TMS apparatus.

  • Recovery of low level nitric acid and sulfuric acid ions, which were contained in wastewater of a wet scrubber for de-NOx and de-SOx from ship engines, was attempted as fertilizing materials. This study utilized a selective extraction method using four organic solvents to precipitate the solid salts of ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate. The IR analysis showed almost same composition of the extracted ammonium salts with a commercial product, and recovery rate of nitrogen and sulfuric ions was 89% and 80% respectively. It was found that the selectivity and solubility consequently could be the crucial factors to recover the low level ions from the waste scrubbing water.

  • This study was conducted on a circulation system which can recycle waste water from EGCS(Exhaust Gas Cleaning System) using a wet scrubber that is used to treat air pollutants from ships. Though we developed a water treatment system that could remove effectively particulate matters and dispersed oil included in cleaning water for Ship Exhaust Gas Recycle System(DePM & DeSOx), we found that it is difficult to treat minutely dispersed oil only by means of centrifugal-typed purifier. Therefore, to this system, we applied a coalescer that coalesces emulsified minute oil particles in the 2nd phase of dispersion state after being filtered through the centrifugal-typed purifier. After we treated cleaning water drained out of Ship Exhaust Gas Recycle System(DePM & DeSOx) by using both purifier and coalescer, we found that particulate matters and dispersed oil were removed more than 55% and 99%, respectively, in comparison with those contained in cleaning water influent. Putting the results together, we conclude that the treated cleaning water can be recycled as normal cleaning water if this cleaning water treatment system is employed by the wet cleaning tower system for the reduction of air pollutants from ships.

  • In the existing research, the ammonia aqueous solution was used in order to remove the Nitrogen dioxide using the scrubber. However, ammonia is poisonous and stench is extreme. So, the system application follows the difficulty. Experiments were conducted to find a substitute material ammonia. The sodium hydroxide(NaOH), sodium thiosulfate ($Na_2S_2O_3$), and urea were used with the substitute substance. The experimental condition proceeded as the optimum conditions in the existing ammonia use. The experimental result NaOH and $Na_2S_2O_3$ was available. NaOH showed the efficiency which is the highest in 2.5%. And $Na_2S_2O_3$ showed the efficiency which is the highest in 5.0%. The efficiency was not fixed and the urea was inappropriate with the substitute substance.

  • BACKGROUND: The mobile vortex wet scrubber was developed to remove the harmful chemicals from accidental releases. However, there was a disadvantage that it was limitedly used for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as toluene according to the physicochemical properties. This study compared the removal efficiencies of an improved mobile scrubber on toluene and ammonia by applying diverse adsorption and absorption methods. METHODS AND RESULTS: The removal efficiencies on harmful chemicals were examined using various adsorption and absorption methods of water vortex process (C), phosphoric acid-impregnated activated carbon adsorption (PCA), pH-controlled water (pH 2.5) vortex process absorption with sulfuric acid (SWA) after ammonia exposure, granular activated carbon adsorption (GCA), and activated carbon mat adsorption (CMA) after toluene exposure. As a result, the best removal efficiency was shown in the SWA for ammonia and GCA for toluene. Also, the SWA and GCA methods were compared with different concentration levels. In the case of ammonia exposure (5, 10 and 25%), there was no difference by concentration levels, and the concentration in the outlet gradually increased, with pH change from acid to base. In the case of toluene exposure (50, 75 and 100%), the outlet concentration was higher relative to the exposure concentration in the initial 10 min, but the outlet concentration was remained steady after 10 min. CONCLUSION: The newly improved mobile scrubber was also effective in removing VOCs through adsorption techniques (activated carbon, activated carbon fiber, carbon mat filter etc.), as well as removing acid-base harmful chemicals by neutralization reaction.
