Analysis of Structure in the Domestic Supply & Demand of the Raw Materials of Rare Metals (국내 희유금속 수급구조 분석 연구)

  • In this study, the domestic supply & demand of the raw materials of 35 rare metals was analyzed categorized as four types - ores, metals, compounds and scraps. Foreign trade volumes of the raw materials of rare metals have been steadily increased, furthermore, recently trade growth rate highly exceeds GDP. The raw materials of rare metals - silicon, nickel, molybdenum, manganese, etc. - for steel industry were the most big part of the raw materials of rare metals trade, while the raw materials of rare metals for electronics industry were imported relatively small volumes less than $100 million. However systematic supply & demand management on the raw materials of rare metals for electronics industry is needed since recently growth rate per year has been remarkably high over 20%. Import volumes were about three times bigger than export scale, and most of the raw materials of rare metals were traded as a metal form.

  • In order to review the recycling status of urban mine resources in Japan, metal consumption, metal recycling rate and metal recycling industry such as iron scrap, end of life vehiclcs(ELV), waste home appliances and spent IT equipments were surveyed. Japan took rank of top class in the world on the metal consumption and urban mine stock reserve. Metal recycling industries in Japan have been developed through excellent technologies for mineral processing and non-ferrous smelting. On the other hand, the technologies for recycling of rare metals are being developed now. Recycling rate of EL V, waste home appliances and personal computer are higher than the guidelines of the legislative standard.

  • Number of vehicles in Korea is gradually increasing and it exceeded 16 million in 2007. Holding of vehicles is connected to disposal, owing to this reason the importance of ELVs recycling has been emphasized. The recycling of ELVs makes the disposal of ELVs easier as well as protects environment and it has the alternative effect economizing the insufficient resource. This study was carried out to evaluate the economic effect of recycling of ELVs compared with disposal of ELVs. The analysis showed that recycling process makes a profit in comparison to the disposal of ELVs. Therefore the government has to consider establishing the regulation related to recycling of ELVs or materials and car manufactures have to develop the efficient dismantling and recycling methods.

Melting of PCB scrap for the Extraction of Metallic Components (PCB스크랩으로부터 유가금속성분 회수를 위한 용융처리)

  • It is well known that PCB (Printed Circuit Board) is a complex mixture of various metals mixed with various types of plastics and ceramics. In this study, high temperature pyre-metallurgical process was investigated to extract valuable metallic components from the PCB scrap. For this purpose, PCB scrap was shredded and oxidized to remove plastic materials, and then, quantitative analyses were made. After the oxidation of the PCB scrap, $30.6wt\%SiO_2,\;19.3wt\%Al_2O_3\;and\;14wt{\%}CaO$ were analyzed as major oxides, and thereafter, a typical composition of $32wt\%SiO_2-20wt\%Al_2O_3-38wt{\%}CaO-10wt\%MgO$ was chosen as a basic slag system for the separation of metallic components. Moreover a size effect of crushed PCB scrap was also investigated. During experiments a high frequency induction furnace was used to melt and separate metallic components. As a result, it was found that the size of oxidized PCB scrap was needed to be less 0.9 m to make a homogeneous liquid slag and to recycle metallic components over $95\%$.

Property Evaluation of Ti Powder and Its Sintered Compacts Prepared by Ti Scrap (티타늄 스크랩을 이용한 분말제조 및 소결 성형체의 특성평가)

  • In this study, Ti powders were fabricated from Ti scrap by the Hydrogenation-Dehydrogenation (HDH) method. The Ti powders were prepared from the spark plasma sintering (SPS) and their microstructure was investigated. Hydrogenation reactions of Ti scrap occurred at near $450^{\circ}C$ with a sudden increase in the reaction temperature and the decreasing pressure of hydrogen gas during the hydrogenation process in the furnace. The dehydrogenation process was also carried out at $750^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs in a vacuum of $10^{-4}$ torr. After the HDH process, deoxidation treatment was carried out with the Ca (purity: 99.5%) at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs in the vacuum system. It was found that the oxidation content of Ti powder that was deoxidized with Ca showed noticeably lower values, compared to the content obtained by the HDH process. In order to fabricate the Ti compacts, Ti powder was sintered under an applied uniaxial punch pressure of 40 MPa in the range of $900-1200^{\circ}C$ for 5 min under a vacuum of $10^{-4}$ torr. The relative density of the compact was 99.5% at $1100^{\circ}C$ and the tensile strength decreased with increasing sintering temperature. After sintering, all of the Ti compacts showed brittle fracture behavior, which occurred in an elastic range with short plastic yielding up to a peak stress. Ti improved the corrosion resistance of the Ti compacts, and the Pd powders were mixed with the HDH Ti powders.

  • Recovery of novel metals such as Au, Ag and Ni from wastes PCB was investigated by slag treatments. The CaO-$Al_2O_3$(-$SiO_2$) and CaO-$SiO_2$-$CaF_2$ slags were employed in the present study. The PCB/Cu ratio is recommended to be lower than unity. The use of CaO-$SiO_2$-$CaF_2$ slag provided the more higher yield of Au, Ag and Ni than the CaO-$Al_2O_3$(-$SiO_2$) slag did, which was mainly due to the lower melting point and the viscosity of $CaF_2$-containing slag. The terminal descending velocity of metal droplets in the slag phase increased with decreasing slag viscosity.

A Study on Pretreatment and Acid Leaching for Wet Recycling of Waste Industrial Ni-Cd Secondary Battery (산업용 니켈-카드뮴 폐 이차전지 습식 재활용을 위한 전처리 및 산 침출에 대한 연구)

  • In order to efficiently recycle waste industrial nickel-cadmium batteries, anodic and cathodic materials were crushed by a cut mill and classified by sieves. We used wet magnetic separation method for eliminating iron components from the crushed powders. In addition, the acid leaching test for the obtained anode and cathode powders was carried out under various conditions by means of the wet process. At the optimum leaching conditions with 2.0 M $H_2SO_4$ at $90^{\circ}C$, 15 wt $H_2O_2$ and L/S=20 for 3 hours, the leaching efficiency of nickel and cadmium was 99%, respectively.

In-Bi-Sn Alloy Sheet for Thermal Fuse Element of Secondary Battery Safety System (이차전지온도퓨즈용 In-Bi-Sn계 가용합금박판 연구)

  • In-Bi-Sn alloy sheet has been used as a thermal fusible parts of secondary battery safety system. This study offers a simple process to make In-Bi-Sn alloy fusible parts. The process consists of two procedures, melting and sheeting by tape casting. 62.5 wt%-In 20.0 wt%-Bi 17.5 wt%-Sn (M.P. $92.4^{\circ}C$) alloy sheet obtained by tape casting was used as the thermal fusible sheet of thermal fuse system for mobile telephone. The performance test of the system was carried out in oil bath, and the fusible alloy sheet was melted and cut off at $95^{\circ}C$. This results confirmed the possibility that the alloy sheet obtained by tape casting can be usable as a thermal fusible parts of battery safety system. And this process can be applied as a simple process to recycle the In-Bi-Sn alloy scrap separated from the used thermal fuse system.

Effect of Carbon Materials on the Slag Foaming in EAF Process (전기로 슬래그 포밍에 미치는 가탄재 종류의 영향)

  • During steelmaking in EAF, recycled scraps is used as a main material, melted by arc, and electricity use as a main energy. Slag foaming is an important technology for reducing electrical energy. CO gas generated by the reaction between injection carbon and (FeO), [C] and injection {$O_2$}. CO gas generated by this reaction is collected in slag, resulted in slag foaming. In general, the carbon materials used in the EAF process is anthracite and coke. This study investigated the effects of the carbon materials used on slag foaming in the steelmaking process. As a result of this study, the slag foaming height is increased by cokes rather than anthracite, and with an increase in the amount of particles samller than $500{\mu}m$. Based on these results, the application to the operation resulted in increase of slag forming height, reduction of injection carbon, and reduction of electrical energy.

Topic Modeling on Research Trends of Industry 4.0 Using Text Mining (텍스트 마이닝을 이용한 4차 산업 연구 동향 토픽 모델링)

  • In this research, text mining techniques were used to analyze the papers related to the "4th Industry". In order to analyze the papers, total of 685 papers were collected by searching with the keyword "4th industry" in Korea Journal Index(KCI) from 2016 to 2019. We used Python-based web scraping program to collect papers and use topic modeling techniques based on LDA algorithm implemented in R language for data analysis. As a result of perplexity analysis on the collected papers, nine topics were determined optimally and nine representative topics of the collected papers were extracted using the Gibbs sampling method. As a result, it was confirmed that artificial intelligence, big data, Internet of things(IoT), digital, network and so on have emerged as the major technologies, and it was confirmed that research has been conducted on the changes due to the major technologies in various fields related to the 4th industry such as industry, government, education field, and job.
