A 3 dimensional numerical analysis for shield TBM tunnel should take into account various characteristics of the shield TBM excavation, such as gap, tail void, segment installation, and backfill injection. However, analysis method considering excavation characteristics are generally mixed with various method, resulting in concern of consistency and reliability degradation of the analytical results. In this paper, a parametric study is carried out by using actually measured ground settlement data on various methods that can be used for 3 dimensional numerical analysis of shield TBM tunneling. As a result, we have analyzed and arranged an analytical method to predict similarly the behavior of ground settlement and tunnel face pressure at the design stage. Skin plate pressure, backfill pressure and soil model have been identified as the most significant influences on the ground settlement. The grout pressure model is considered to be applicable when there is no volume loss information on the excavated ground, such as seabed tunnels, or when it is important to identify the behavior around a tunnel, such as surface settlement as well as face pressure. And it is considered that designers can use these guidelines as a base material to perform a reasonable 3 dimensional numerical analysis that reflects the ground conditions and the features of the shield TBM tunneling.

The interest in the use of shield TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) on the tunnel excavation has been increased rapidly in Korea. The shield TBM tunnel is generally designed as non-drainage tunnel. Consequently, if water leakage through the segment joints happens, big problems on the usage and stability of tunnel can be occurred. In this study, the variation of waterproof capacity of hydrophilic rubber waterstop and gasket, respectively by the construction error and excessive displacement of segment was studied. The test results show that hydrophilic rubber waterstop has favorable on the offset, however unfavorable on the gap. On the other hand, gasket has unfavorable on the offset, however favorable on the gap.
Recently, due to the expansion of urban infrastructure for the citizen convenience, the shield tunnel construction has increased considering the civil complaints minimization and construction stability. Most shield tunnels are designed based on the assumption of the undrained condition that underground water does not inflow, but they are operated in the field as drained tunnels with drainage facility to drain underground water. Therefore, the drained condition needs to be considered in the shield tunnel design. It is also necessary to consider the weathered granite soil that is widely distributed throughout the country and consequently is encountered in most of construction sites. In this paper, the model test which can control total stress and pore water pressure and simulate the underground tunnel located in the weathered granite soil below ground water level is conducted. Total stress, pore water pressure and an inflow water into an inner pipe were measured using the testing device. Test results showed that the total stress in a drained condition was lower than in an undrained condition because pore water pressure decreased in a drained condition and an inflow water into an inner pipe was proportional to the loading stress in a drained condition. As a result, if a drained condition is considered in the shield tunnel design, the more economical design can be expected because of the stress reduction of the lining.

In many countries, most of the tunneling works have been ordered by the shield TBM, and also Korean companies are actively bidding and execute in this project. In case of Korea, refurbished machines are mainly using in power cable, gas pipelines, and water and sewage tunnel. Also in metro projects, shield TBM of over diameter 7m is required mainly by using brand new machine. Since the shield TBM is not easy to change once it is produced, it is necessary for the client to provide sufficient information on the production conditions so as to satisfy various characteristics of the construction. In this study, to manufacturing optimal shield TBM, the Client's TBM requirements of tunnel construction in Hong Kong and UK was analyzed and compared with the domestic requirements. The results are expected to provide as client's guidelines for bidding stage and manufacturing for shield TBM tunneling in Korea in the future.

Shield TBM is a tunnelling method that has a wider range of applications in the poor ground condition compared to conventional tunnels (Drill and Blast). Currently, a 13.3 m large-diameter slurry shield TBM is preparing for construction to pass under the Han River. Shield TBM is divided into slurry and EPB shield TBM, and management items during construction are different depending on each characteristic. In this paper, the equipment type, origin, application case and trouble case were analyzed for slurry shield TBM, which is mainly constructed in soft ground. In addition, 2D and 3D model tests were conducted on the condition of soil depth for the possibility of slurry leakage into front of the equipment, with appropriate chamber pressure. Based on this paper, it proposed to provide basic and reference data for proper excavation surface pressure and chamber pressure during construction of slurry shield TBM under soft ground conditions, and proposed measures to minimize stability and environmental decline due to slurry ejection.
As the demand for urban underground space increases recently, urban tunnel planning is actively progressing. In the urban area, a underground station is planned in consideration of the living environment of residents, and 2-arch tunnel is applied for the stability of existing structures and reduction of environmental damage. However, since the depth of weak rock mass is deeply distributed in the urban area due to severe weathering, careful planning is required to secure tunnel stability. In addition, if TBM mechanical excavation is applied as the main tunnel excavation method considering the composite ground in urban area, the construction connectivity with the 2-arch tunnel of the NATM concept may be deteriorated. In this study, the design case of applying TBM pre-excavation type 2-arch tunnel for the first time in Korea was mainly described. The main considerations for the segment design of TBM pre-excavation type 2-arch tunnel were explained for side tunnels. Also, a stability analysis was conducted to verify the effectiveness and adequacy of the TBM pre-excavation type 2-arch tunnel.

The shield tunneling method has been increasingly employed to minimize environmental damages and civil complaints in the populated and developed area. A lining segment, which is a main structure of the shield tunnel, consists of joints. Conventional foreign and domestic design data have been commonly used for design practices without a specific verification of structural analysis models, design load, and the effect of soil characteristics on the performance of lining segment. In this study, the suitability of existing analytic models used for the design of shield tunnel lining segment has been evaluated through a comparison between analytical and numerical solutions. Based on the evaluation of their suitability performed in the study, a full-circumferential beam jointed spring model (1R-S0) is proposed for design practices by considering user's convenience, the applicability of field conditions and the accuracy of analysis result. By using the proposed model, the parameter analysis was performed to investigate the effects of joint stiffness, ground rigidity, joint distribution and the number of joints on the behavior of lining segment. Parameters considered in the investigation have been appeared to affect the behavior of lining segment. Among those parameters, joint stiffness has been appeared to have the most significant effect on the bending moment and displacement of lining segment.
