VLSI design of efficient VLC/VLD utilizing the characteristics of MPEG DCT coefficients (MPEG DCT 계수의 특징을 이용한 효율적인 VLC/VLD의 VLSI 설계)

  • In this paper we propose an architecture for VLC(Variable Length Coder) and VLD(Variable Length Decoder) which is simple with respect to implementation point and efficient in memory. We implemented encoding and decoding circuit where we need only 7-bit address memory space for 114 MPEG1 DCT coefficients and employed minimal number of flip-flops and logics for an architecture to integrate a shift register for serial-to-parallel or parallel-to-serial conversion of the data in code mapping ROM. We obtained 50Mbps operating speed in both encoding and decoding process as the result of simulation using 0.80.8${\mu}m$ CMOS standard cells.

A New Document Codec System based on Wavelet Lifting and Bitplane Coding (웨이블릿 리프팅과 비트평면 부호화에 기반한 새로운 문서 코덱 시스템)

  • In this paper, we present the development of document compression codec using segmentation, wavelet lifting and bitplane coding. We use the segmentation to preserve the text appearance. We performed integer-to-integer wavelet lifting and also performed bitplane subblock coding for document compression. We acquired a high compression ratio and an efficient compression by encoding only the significant subblocks in the bitplane subblock coding. We also implemented scalar quantization by subband-oriented bit shifting. The system performs color conversion and downsampling before wavelet lifting and also performs graycode conversion and quantization before subblock coding. In the experiment, we show the performances of the system by presenting the high compression ratios and high PSNR values.

  • This paper proposes a novel normalization scheme in the state metric calculation unit for the Block-wise MAP Turbo decoder. The proposed scheme subtracts one of four metrics from the state metrics in a trellis stage and shifts, if necessary, those metrics for normalization. The proposed architecture can reduce power consumption and memory requirement by reducing the number of the state metrics by one in a trellis stage in the Block-wise MAP decoder which requires an intensive state metric calculations. Simulation results show that dynamic power has been reduced by 17.9% and area has been reduced by 6.6% in the Turbo decoder employing the proposed normalization scheme, when compared to the conventional Block-wise MAP Turbo decoders.

Design of combined unsigned and signed parallel squarer (Unsigned와 signed 겸용 병렬 제곱기의 설계)

  • The partial product matrix of a parallel squarer are symmetric about the diagonal. To reduce the number of partial product bits and the depth of partial product matrix, it can be typically folded, shifted and bit-rearranged. In this paper, an efficient design approach for the combined squarer, capable of operating on either unsigned or signed numbers based on a mode selection signal, is presented. By simulations, it is shown that the proposed combined squarers lead to up to 18% reduction in area, 11% reduction in propagation delay and 9% reduction in power consumption compared with the previous combined squarers.

Dual Modulation Driving for Poly-Si TFT Active Matrix OLED Displays (다결정 실리콘 박막 트랜지스터 Active Matrix OLED 디스플레이를 위한 이중 변조 구동)

  • We developed a new ANGLED display driving method which used both amplitude and pulse width modulation. For pulse width modulation, we divided a picture frame time into S sub-frames. For amplitude modulation, we used three OLED luminance(or current) levels which were controlled by TFT's gate voltages. By combining these two modulation methods, we obtained 35(=243) grey levels. And we designed a new data electrode driving circuit block with two shift registers without using DAC's. To verify the feasibility, we simulated the key circuit components by HSpice with TFT parameters extracted from current-voltage characteristics of 6${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ channel length polysilicon TFT's. From the simulation results, we found that 320${\times}$240, dual scan, 243 grey level AMOLED display can be designed with this method.

  • Recently, most vehicles has the Automatic transmission system as their transmission system. The automatic transmission system operates with fixed shift patterns. In the opposite of manual operation, it is easy and convenient for driving. Though these merit, the system can not evaluate the driver s intension because of usage of fixed shift pattern. To consider driver s intension, we must consider both the driving intensity of driver and the status of vehicle. In this paper, we developed flexible automatic transmission system by using the proposed moduled neural networks which can learn the status of th vehicle and driver s intensity. As a results, we compare the transmission system using fixed shift pattern and the proposed transmission system and show the good performance in the change of shift position.

  • 이동통신 시스템의 OFDM(Othogonal frequency division multiplexing) 신호는 큰 PAPR(Peak to Average Power Ratio)을 가지기 때문에 비선형 특성을 가지는 전력 증폭기의 효율 감소를 가져온다. 이러한 전력 증폭기의 비선형 특성을 개선하여 효율을 증가시키기 위해서 전력 증폭기의 역 특성을 가지는 디지털 전치 왜곡기가 이용된다. 본 논문에서는 제곱근 근사를 이용한 Look-up Table(LUT) 기반의 디지털 전치왜곡(Digital Pre-Distortion :DPD) 기법을 제안한다. 제안하는 방식은 복소 이득(Complex Gain) LUT 구조에서 입력신호의 크기를 구할 때, 기존의 테이블을 이용하여 제곱근 연산을 하는 방식보다 좋은 성능을 내면서 근사를 위한 테이블의 메모리를 필요로 하지 않는다. 또한 간단한 쉬프트 연산 등을 이용하므로 DSP 또는 MCU 기반의 DPD를 구현할 때 간단하게 구현 될 수 있다는 장점을 갖는다. 컴퓨터 모의실험을 통해 제안하는 제곱근 근사방식을 이용한 DPD와 기존의 방식을 사용한 DPD를 비교함으로써 제안하는 방식이 기존 방식보다 좋은 성능을 내면서도 보다 효율적으로 구현될 수 있음을 검증하였다.

  • The orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technique and the single carrier with cyclic prefix (SC-CP) scheme are very attractive solutions for wireless applications, being computationally efficient since equalization is performed in the frequency domain. The equalizer could not entirely handle significant mean. Doppler shift. This motivates the use of a phase error tracking loop that operates jointly with the frequency equalizer. This paper describes the effect of the mean phase error and the performance of the proportional equalizer coupled with a phase error tracking loop based on decision-directed method. Furthermore, simulation results show that we can reduce the computational toad of the tracking loop with minimal performance degradation.

  • In this paper we implemented a field-sequential stereoscopic endoscope system that can generate stereoscopic images with different perspective depth using LCD shutter. The stereoscopic image is generated form stereoscopic adapter that has LCD shutter. We have compared the stereoscopic depth of a field-sequential stereoscopic endoscope system with that of the conventional endoscope system. And the implemented system is verified by evaluation the field-sequential stereoscopic image on a Monitor. This system will be use to medical instruments in time.

Reversible Data Embedding Algorithm based on Pixel Value Prediction Scheme using Local Similarity in Image (지역적 유사성을 이용한 픽셀 값 예측 기법에 기초한 가역 데이터 은닉 알고리즘)

  • In this paper, an effective reversible data embedding algorithm was proposed to embed secrete data into image. In the proposed algorithm, prediction image is generated by accurately predicting pixel values using local similarity existing in image, difference sequence is generated using the generated prediction image and original cover image, and then histogram shift technique is applied to create a stego-image with secrete data hidden. Applying the proposed algorithm, secrete data can be extracted from the stego-image and the original cover image can be restored without loss. Experimental results show that it is possible to embed more secrete data into cover image than APD algorithm by applying the proposed algorithm.
