  • A numerically stable technique to remove the limitation in choosing a shift in the subspace iteration method with shift is presented. A major difficulty of the subspace iteration method with shift is that because of singularity problem, a shift close to an eigenvalue can not be used, resulting in slower convergence. This study solves the above singularity problem using side conditions without sacrifice of convergence. The method is always nonsingular even if a shift is an eigenvalue itself. This is one of the significant characteristics of the proposed method. The nonsingularity is proved analytically. The convergence of the proposed method is at least equal to that of the subspace iteration method with shift, and the operation counts of above two methods are almost the same when a large number of eigenpairs are required. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, two numerical examples are considered.

  • An efficient and numerically stable eigensolution method for structures with multiple natural frequencies is presented. The proposed method is developed by improving the well-known subspace iteration method with shift. A major difficulty of the subspace iteration method with shift is that because of singularity problem, a shift close to an eigenvalue can not be used, resulting in slower convergence. In this paper, the above singularity problem has been solved by introducing side conditions without sacrifice of convergence. The proposed method is always nonsingular even if a shift is on a distinct eigenvalue or multiple ones.

  • This study analyzes the basic characteristics needed for motivating modal shift from truck to rail. The object of the study is to consider the resistance factor for container transported inland and the object point is the transfer node where modal shift occurs. The main contents of the study are as follows. First, the study looks at what shippers, engaged in inland transport of container, think of current transfer node environment. From this, the study analyzes what resistance factors are attributable to the lack of motivation in modal shift from truck to rail. Second, the study estimates mode choice models in which the resistance factors at transfer node are applied. Also by using this, the study draws out elasticities, and analyzes characteristics of resistantance factors in modal shift. Third, as its result, the study suggests methods to promote modal-shifting container transport from truck to rail.

  • This paper presents low-power asynchronous barrel shifters for variable length encoders and decoders useful in portable applications using multimedia standards. Our approach is to create multi-level asynchronous barrel shifters optimized for the skewed shift control statistics often found in these codecs. For common shifts, data passes through one level, whereas for rare shifts, data passes though multiple levels. We compare our optimized designs with the straightforward asynchronous and synchronous designs. Both pre- and Post-layout HSPICE simulation results indicate that, compared to their synchronous counterparts, our designs provide over a 40% savings in average energy consumption for a given average performance.

  • Korean government has introduced the modal shift grant scheme in July 2010 to help the competitiveness of carriage of rail freight and awarded a grant to private companies shifting mode of transportation from road to rail in the carriage of freight: the additional costs incurred in the modal shift are supported by the government. However, there arise needs for the amendment of the modal shift grant scheme. This study reviewed the modal shift grant schemes of foreign countries, such as EU, UK and Japan, and drew implications. Furthermore, this study suggested the future directions of the modal shift grant scheme from the respects of the maximization of the effects of the grant scheme, continual rail use of existing rail freight, and justification of the grant scheme. Finally, policy measures amending the existing modal shift grant scheme were suggested.

  • Many researchers have been interested in the optimization of parallel programs through the latency hiding by overlapping the communication with the computation. We ana1yzed overlapping effects in the circular shift communication which is one of the collective communications being frequently used In many data parallel programs. We measured the time which can be possibly overlapped and the time which cannot be overlapped in over all circular shift communication period on an Ethernet switch-based clustered system. The result from each platform nay be used for the input of optimizing compilers. The previous performance models usually have two kinds of drawbacks one is only based on point-to-point communication, so it is not appropriate for analyzing the overall effects of collective communications. The other provides the performance of collective communication, but no overlapping effect. In this paper we extended the previous models and analyzed the experimental results of the extended model.
