The objective of this study is to propose a mathematical model for a pervaporation process for concentrating hydrogen peroxide. The process was developed by NASA, which consists of a shell and membrane tubes, where a liquid hydrogen peroxide solution flows in the shell, and a sweep gas flows in the tubes countercurrent to each other. The liquid retentate is concentrated as more water molecules permeate and evaporate through the membrane than hydrogen peroxide. For this process, a mathematical model has been developed in the form of a system of nonlinear partial differential algebraic equations based on a sorption-diffusion mechanism for permeation, an Arrhenius relationship for the temperature dependency of the permeate flux, and mass and momentum balances for the liquid concentrations and flows in the membrane module. The dynamic behavior of the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in the retentate side has been simulated by solving a simplified version of the proposed model, and the result is compared with the experimental data reported in the NASA patent.

In this paper, in order to develop a realistic trigger model for a unidirectional Kevlar/Epoxy tube, the numerical model has been established and then verified by comparison with the experimental result. To achieve this goal, four different trigger models were candidated and evaluated using the commercial explicit FE code LS-DYNA. In the finite element analysis, the 2D shell element and Chang-Chang failure criterion was used. Mechanical material properties for the model were obtained by material testing in advance. The numerical results were compared with quasi-static test results under axial compressive loading at 10mm/min. The load-crushed displacement curves were very close to the experiments and SEA (specific energy absorption) showed a good agreement with experimental one within less than 5%.

Due to global warming and depletion of fossil fuels, technologies reducing $CO_2$ emission and increasing fuel efficiency simultaneously are required. An exhaust gas heat recovery system is a technology to satisfy both issues. This study analyses three types of heat exchanger installed on an exhaust pipe. In case of plate type heat exchanger, back pressure rapidly increased and maximum cylinder pressure reduced in high speed and maximum load, and back pressure increased over twice and specific fuel consumption also increased up to 2% which were the highest increasing rate. In case of fin tube type, the amounts of exhaust emissions and specific fuel consumption rate were less than the other two types. The effect of shell and tube was in the middle. Making a decision by only the effect on engine performance, a fin tube type is the best for exhaust heat recovery systems.
Herein we report the in-situ synthesis and direct decoration of chalcogenide naoparticles (NPs) onto multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) through an ionic liquid-assisted sonochemical method (ILASM). The as-obtained MWCNT/$BMimBF_4$/CdTe, MWCNT/$BMimBF_4$/ZnTe and MWCNT/$BMimBF_4$/ZnSe nanocomposites were characterized by TEM images and EDS spectra. In particular, the morphologies of nanocomposites such as bump-like, rough, and smooth core-shell structures were strongly influenced by the type of precursors and the interactions with MWCNT. This synthetic strategy opens a new way to directly synthesize and deposit semiconducting NPs (s-NPs) onto CNTs, which consist of binary components obtained from two precursors with different reaction rates.

A new baffle configuration, an annular baffles, are considered in the present study as an alternative to reduce the excessive pressure drop associated with the conventional segmental ones in typical operating conditions. The heat transfer and pressure drops are numerically simulated for a single tube shell-and-tube model and compared against the conventional-baffle cases. Baffle blockage ratio and number of baffles are considered as the major variables for the present study specifying a fixed baffle spacing. It is found that the heat transfer increases 1.4~2.2 times without significant pressure loss compared to the bare tube cases and the goodness factor increases 1.35 times compared to the conventional-baffle model.

The shell and tube-type heat exchangers have been frequently used in many industrial field because of its simple structure and wide operation conditions and so on. The purpose of this study is to investigate the flow characteristics in single shell of shell and tube-type heat exchanger according to velocity and temperature of hot air released from heat exchanger simulator through numerical analysis. As the results, the temperature was decreased in almost quadratic curve from top to bottom in single shell of the shell and tube-type heat exchanger. Further the changes of pressure and velocity in outlet according to change of inlet temperature were not observed. The cost for operating the shell and tube-type heat exchanger should be compared the supply cost of hot air with that of velocity in order to make a economic decision.
A dynamic model has been developed to investigate the operability of a single and double-effect solar energy assisted parallel type absorption chiller. In the study, main components and fluid transport mechanism have been modeled. Flow discharge coefficients of the valves and the pumps were optimized for the double-effect mode with solar-heated water circulated. The model was run for the single mode with solar energy supply only and the solar/gas driving double effect mode. And the cases of the double mode with and without the solar energy were compared. From the simulation results, it was found that the present configuration of the chiller is not capable of regulating solution flow rates according to variable solar energy input. And the single mode utilizing the solar energy only is not practical. It is suggested to operate the system in the double mode and the flow rate control system adaptive to variable solar energy input has to be developed.

Two-phase vapor-liquid flows exist in many shell and tube heat exchangers such as condensers, evaporators, and nuclear steam generators. To understand the fluid dynamic forces acting on a structure subjected to a two-phase flow, it is essential to obtain detailed information about the characteristics of a two-phase flow. The characteristics of a two-phase flow and the flow parameters were introduced, and then, an experiment was performed to evaluate the pressure loss in the tube bundles and the fluid-dynamic force acting on the cylinder owing to the pressure distribution. A two-phase flow was pre-mixed at the entrance of the test section, and the experiments were undertaken using a normal triangular array of cylinders subjected to a two-phase cross-flow. The pressure loss along the flow direction in the tube bundles was measured to calculate the two-phase friction multiplier, and the multiplier was compared with the analytical value. Furthermore, the circular distributions of the pressure on the cylinders were measured. Based on the distribution and the fundamental theory of two-phase flow, the effects of the void fraction and mass flux per unit area on the pressure coefficient and the drag coefficient were evaluated. The drag coefficient was calculated by integrating the measured pressure on the tube by a numerical method. It was found that for low mass fluxes, the measured two-phase friction multipliers agree well with the analytical results, and good agreement for the effect of the void fraction on the drag coefficients, as calculated by the measured pressure distributions, is shown qualitatively, as compared to the existing experimental results.
A car horn serves a crucial safety role as a means of communication between drivers and a part that alerts pedestrians in advance. While previous studies have utilized finite element method and electric circuit model to simulate and analyze characteristics of the car horns, there remains a lack of research on design methods of a trumpet horn. This paper presents a design approach that predicts the operating frequency based on the acoustic reactance at the throat of the horn, once the vibrating part is determined. We deal with a horn combining both an exponential horn and a waveguide in the acoustic section, and confirm that the acoustic reactance at the horn throat measured by impedance tube experiment agrees well compared with the numerical result obtained using the finite element method. The resonance frequency of the car horn is predicted using the COMSOL Multiphysics finite element numerical analysis model, and the proposed design method is validated by measuring the operating frequency of the designed horn in a sound pressure experiment. As a result, the resonance measured in a semi-anechoic chamber environment by applying a DC voltage of 12 [V] excluding the holder occurs accurately within a few [Hz] of the design operating frequency. This paper discuss the design method of a trumpet horn from the perspective of the horn's acoustic reactance, and is expected to be useful for designing horn systems.
