  • Circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) ash is one of useful mineralogical resources having abundant content of free lime and anhydrite, and has a self-cementitious property. Recently, considerable interest has been gained regarding the utilization of CFBC ash, along with its use in mine backfill and reclamation. Prior to adopt the use of CFBC ash in the mine backfill technology, discussion on the technology and related specification is prerequisite in the future. This paper presents a review on studies in the emerging technology of CFBC ash utilization, and provides useful information with regard to the specifications for mine backfills utilizing CFBC ash.

  • Enrichment possibilities for recovering rare earth elements contained in coal bottom ash generated from domestic circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) were identified. The transport characteristics of the REEs according to the separation and removal of major minerals were evaluated using sieving and leaching process. The main minerals of bottom ash were identified as anhydrite, magnetite, and quartz, and this was confirmed as a 30% of REE content of the world's average coal ash REE value (404 ppm) as a result of the difference in the combustion characteristics of power plants (REE contents in starting material: 123 ppm). More than 90% of the REEs contained in the bottom ash were found to move mainly with magnetite, and less than 10% of the components were found to move with the quartz. Therefore, In order to recover rare earth elements from coal bottom ashes generated from CFBC boiler, it is necessary to select the main rare elements such as magnetite and develop a pretreatment and concentration process.

  • The rare earth elements (REE) contents in coal ashes generated from domestic circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) were identified for evaluating the exploitation possibilities for recovering rare earth elements. Total REE contents for all of the samples in this study ranged from 82.2 ~ 311.7 ppm, much lower than the 403.5 ppm given on the average value of world coal ash. As a result of analysis using REE concentration and Outlook coefficient, six types of coal ashes falls in the unpromising area (I). These results suggest that it is difficult to recover rare earth element from coal ashes at this stage. It has been confirmed that to recover rare earth elements in coal ashes, research on the pretreatment and concentration process for critical REE is requirement.

  • Inorganic binding material was made by recycled resource and its applicability as pile-filling material was examined. The result was that the material had same liquidity with the liquidity of OPC and high reactivity with site soil. According to dynamic/static loading tests by site test-construction, the inorganic binding material met both design bearing capacity and settlement. Since the inorganic binding material showed same or better performance than OPC, the utilization possibility of the inorganic binding material made of recycled resource as pile-filling material was verified.

  • This study was carried out to physicochemical properties and free CaO contents of coal ash in domestic circulating fludized bed combustion power plant using ethylene glycol method. Results of physicochemical properties, there are many differences in CaO contents for the region position in CFBC plant. The reason, It is considered to be reflected that regulation of exhaust concentration for oxides of sulfur and other operation characteristics of region position in CFBC plant. Free CaO contents are 1.96 ~ 10.78% of fly ash and 0.07~4.24 % of bottom ash, fly ash is higher than in the bottom ash. besides CaO contents of raw materials, particle distribution have a lot of influence Free CaO contents.

  • For the recycling of coal ash from the domestic circulating fluidized bed boilers, a lime-based sorbent with 0.2~0.4 mm size was prepared by using limestone powder and CFBC fly ash. Mixing a small amount of slaked lime in the lime-based absorbent lead the formation of calcium silicate on the surface of the particle and the strength of absorbent particle was improved. As a result of comparing the desulfurization characteristics, it was found that the conversion rate was about 10% higher than that of commercially available limestone desulfurization used in the furnace, which is confirmed that it can be used as a desulfurization absorbent.

  • This study analyzed the amount of carbon dioxide reduction and economic benefits of detailed processes of CO2 6,000 tons plant facilities with mineral carbonation technology using carbon dioxide and coal materials emitted from domestic circulating fluidized bed combustion power plants. Coal ash reacted with carbon dioxide through carbon mineralization facilities is produced as a complex carbonate and used as a construction material, accompanied by a greenhouse gas reduction. In addition, it is possible to generate profits from the sales of complex carbonates and carbon credits produced in the process. The actual carbon dioxide reduction per ton of complex carbonate production was calculated as 45.8 kgCO2eq, and the annual carbon dioxide reduction was calculated as 805.3 tonCO2, and the benefit-cost ratio (B/C Ratio) is 1.04, the internal rate return (IRR) is 10.65 % and the net present value (NPV) is KRW 24,713,465 won, which is considered economical. Carbon mineralization technology is one of the best solutions to reduce carbon dioxide considering future carbon dioxide reduction and economic potential.

  • In this study, the Controlled Low Strength Material (CLSM) was investigated to utilize the bottom ash and fly ash generated in the Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustor (CFBC). It was confirmed that the CFBC fly ash (CFBC-F) and CFBC bottom ash (CFBC-B) had an irregular particle shape through SEM measurement. According to the results of the hazard analysis, it was also confirmed that they were environmentally safe. In the case of mixing with CFBC-F, the unit quantity was increased. Regarding the rate of change of length, shrinkage in the range of -0.05~0.50% occurred in the air dry curing condition and expansion in the range of 0.1~0.6% in the sealed curing condition. Compressive strength was increased in the sealed curing condition compared to the air dry curing condition because there was enough moisture for hydration reaction in the long term. Therefore, the results of this study are likely be used as basic research data of mine filler materials.

  • To solve the problems of the low combustion activity of Korean anthracite and the abundant loss of unburned carbon in fly ash, pellet coal was fabricated from coal fines and fly ash, and the mixed combustion of coarse coal with the pellet coal was examined in the circulating fluidized bed combustor of a 0.1 MW scale test unit. In the combustion of the raw coal only, the significant amount of coal fines was entrained, resulting in overheat at the top of the combustor. With the coarse coal that most fines were eliminated, however, the combustion temperature was maintained stable. The mixed combustion of coarse and raw coals was also feasible even though it often went unstable. The mixed combustion of the coarse coal with the pellet coal was as stable as the coarse coal combustion, showing a promise that the combustion of the Korean anthracite in commercial circulating fluidized bed boilers could be further enhanced.
