For debugging effectively the shared-memory programs with nested parallelism, it is important to detect efficiently the first races which incur non-deterministic executions of the programs. Previous on-the-fly technique detects the first races in two passes, and shows inefficiencies both in execution time and memory space because the size of an access history for each shared variable depends on the maximum parallelism of program. This paper proposes a new on-the-fly technique to detect the first races in two passes, which is constant in both the number of event comparisons and the space complexity on each access to shared variable because the size of an access history for each shared variable is a small constant. This technique therefore makes on-the-fly race detection more efficient and practical for debugging shared-memory programs with nested parallelism.

This paper investigates how artificial individuals with behavioral memory circuits adaptively evolve with respect to given environments on a cell-level simulation framework simulating artificial individuals. This makes it possible for us to analyse the advantages of artificial individuals with behavioral memory circuits against the simple artificial individuals that can do only simple reactions with respect to the environments and to know which advanced reactions are possible. In order to do this analysis, we experimented various tests on a specific prey pattern and examined the results. As a first experiment, we tested that artificial individuals with four memory steps competed against from those without memory step to those with three memory steps. Experimental results showed that the artificial individuals with four memory steps were superior to most others. However, artificial individuals with two memory steps were better than those with four memory steps. This was caused that the artificial individuals with two memory steps could evolve faster than those of four memory steps. In a second experiment that all types of artificial individuals are simultaneously evolved, the artificial individuals with two memory steps also showed the best result in the experiment. We could conclude that the artificial individuals with memory was better than those without memory and the best memory steps of artificial individuals were depended on the complexity of prey patterns.
The appropriate interpretation of social cues is a crucial ability for everyday life. While processing socially relevant information, beyond the low-level physical features of the stimuli to emotional information is known to influence human cognition in various stages, from early perception to later high-level cognition, such as working memory (WM). However, it remains unclear how the influence of each type of emotional information on cognitive processes changes in response to what has occurred in the processing stage. Past studies have largely adopted face stimuli to address this type of research question, but we used a unique class of socially relevant motion stimuli, called biological motion (BM), which depicts various human actions and emotions with moving dots to exhibit the effects of anger, happiness, and neutral emotion on task performance in perceptual and working memory. In this study, participants determined whether two BM stimuli, sequentially presented with a delay between them (WM task) or one immediately after the other (perceptual task), were identical. The perceptual task showed that discrimination accuracies for emotional stimuli (i.e., angry and happy) were lower than those for neutral stimuli, implying that emotional information has a negative impact on early perceptual processes. Alternatively, the results of the WM task showed that the accuracy drop as the interstimulus interval increased was actually lower in emotional BM conditions than in the neutral condition, which suggests that emotional information benefited maintenance. Moreover, anger and happiness had distinct impacts on the performance of perception and WM. Our findings have significance as we provide evidence for the interaction of type of emotion and information-processing stage.
Memory for repeated items is better if they are repeated in a spaced than in a massed fashion (Sparing effect). To investigate the neural mechanisms of sparing effect and successful encoding, lags of repetition were manipulated at encoding stage in an event-related MU study. The behavioral data showed typical spacing effect on recognition judgment, and greater activity for items that were repeated in a spaced fashion than for items that were repeated in a massed fashion has been observed in dorsolateral frontal cortex(DLFC) and ventrolateral frontal cortex(VLFC) of left hemisphere. These conical regions also showed greater activity for novel items than for items that were repeated in a massed fashion. These findings suggest that sparing effect and its relevant successful encoding are attributed to higher level of attentional control and semantic processing.
The purpose of this study was to examine the working memory that is related with reading. For this purpose, the third and fourth grade children with reading difficulty were compared with normal children. The gender comparison and the correlations among the three components of working memory were also examined. The results indicated that the reading difficulty group were outperformed by the normal group in every test. Gender difference was found only in visuospatial capacity. There was an interaction between reading and gender in the memory of dynamic mazes. In the whole group, every correlation among all components was significant. When the correlations were examined separately in each group, however, only one correlation was significant in both groups. When the influence of the central executive was controlled, the interrelationship between phonological working memory and visuospatial working memory was mitigated. This study suggests that when teaching children with reading difficulty instructional material should be succinct and visuospatial information needs to be used for boys if possible.

Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are smart materials. The unique characteristics of SMAs enable the production of large force and displacement. Hence, SMAs can be used in many applications such as in actuators and active structural acoustic controllers; the SMAs can also be used for dynamic tuning and shape control. A SMA torque tube actuator consisting of SMA tubes and superelastic springs is proposed, and the behaviors of the actuator are investigated. From the results of heat transfer analysis, it is proved that the SMA torque tube actuator with both resistive heating of SMA itself and a separate conventional heating rod in the tube core has good performance. The behavior of an actuator system was analyzed by performing a contact analysis, and the twisting motion was noticed when checking the actuation. 3D SMA nonlinear constitutive equations were formulated numerically and implemented by performing a nonlinear analysis by using Abaqus UMAT.
It was well known that working memory highly related with academic achievement. The aim of this study was to investigate the differences of brain activation which visually evoked working memory(encoding and retrieval) through functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging(fMRI) in Higher Academic Achievement Group(HAAG) and Lower Academic Achievement Group(LAAG) of college students. 20 assigned college students participated in fMRI studies. They underwent totally 210 seconds repeated paradigm. Stimulation paradigm composed with resting time and encoding and retrieval seeing the figures from the mirror with head coil. The brain activation maps and their quantification were analyzed by the statistical parametric mapping(SPM99) program from level of significance 95%. HAAG was more significantly higher than LAAG in bilateral prefrontal lobe(brodmann 46) associated with working memory, inferior parietal lobe associated with attention, and visual association area in encoding figures test. Right dosoprefrontal lobe(BA 44), right fusiform gyrus associated with decision of figure and, lingual gyrus were more activated in retrieval test with HAAG. On the other hand, LAAG was more significantly higher than HAAG in cingulate gyrus during encoding test. Thalamus, basal ganglia, cerebellum were more activated in retrieval test. Consequently, We could guess from these results HAAG more effectively executed than LAAG in visual working memory test.
Superelastic shape memory alloys (SMAs) are metallic materials that can automatically recover to their original condition without heat treatment only after the removal of the applied load. These smart materials have been wildly applied instead of steel materials to the place where large deformation is likely to concentrate. In spite of many advantages, superelastic SMA materials have been limited to use in the construction filed because there is lack of effort and research involved with the development of the material model, which is required to reproduce the behavior of superelastic SMA materials. Therefore, constitutive material models as well as algorithm codes are mainly treated in this study for the purpose of simulating their hysteretic behavior through numerical analyses. The simulated curves are compared and calibrated to the experimental test results with an aim to verify the adequacy of material modeling. Furthermore, structural analyses incorporating the material property of the superelastic SMAs are conducted on simple and cantilever beam models. It can be shown that constitutive material models presented herein are adequate to reliably predict the behavior of superelastic SMA materials under cyclic loadings.
The present study investigated the related variables of cognitive function, subjective cognitive decline and cognitive training effects. The cognitive training was composed of mete-cognitive education and cognitive task performing. Twenty older adults attended for 14 weeks and were tested before and after the training. Results show that their cognitive level was related with age, self-esteem and personality traits. And subjective cognitive decline was related depression, anxiety, personality traits, self-efficacy, self-esteem and subjective age, but it does not reflect objective cognitive impairments. Their cognitive test scores were enhanced after training in MMSE, memory and executive function, and enhanced scores were related with age, subjective cognitive decline, anxiety, self-efficacy, self-esteem, subjective age and personality traits. Findings suggest one's personality and psychological state need to be considered for the effects of cognitive training.
