  • Although the table, as one of the representations for helping mathematics understanding, steadily has been shown in the mathematics textbooks, there have been little studies that focus on the table and analyze how the table may be used in understanding students' functional thinking. This study investigated the elementary school 5th graders' abilities to design function tables. The results showed that about 75% of the students were able to create tables for themselves, which shaped horizontal and included information only from the problem contexts. And the students had more difficulties in solving geometric growing pattern problems than story problems. Building on these results, this paper is expected to provide implications of instructional directions of how to use the table as 'function table'.

  • This research analyzed mathematical discourse of the students in an RME-based differential equations course at a university in order to investigate the social transformation of the students' conceptual model of differential equations. The analysis focused on the change in the students' use of conceptual metaphor for differential equations and pedagogical factors promoting the change. The analysis shows that discrete and quantitative conceptual model was prevalent in the beginning of the semester However, continuous and qualitative conceptual model emerged through the negotiation of mathematical meaning based on the inquiry of context problems. The participation in the project class has a positive impact on the extension of the students' conceptual model of differential equations and increases the fluency of the students' problem solving in differential equations. Moreover, this paper provides a discussion to identify the pedagogical factors Involved with the transformation of the students' conceptual model. The discussion highlights the sociocultural aspect of teaching and learning of mathematics and provides implications to improve teaching of mathematics in school.

  • A recognizable form having meaning is called a sign in semiotics. The sign is transformed into a physical counter form in this work. Its internal structure is restricted on the linguistic concept structure. We borrow the concept of a mathematical function from the utility function of a rational personal in the economy. Universalizing the utility function by introducing the consistency of independency on the manner of construction, we construct the probability. We introduce a random variable for the probability and join it to a position variable. Thus, we propose a physical sign and its serial changes in the forms of stochastic equations. The equations estimate three patterns (jumping, drifting, diffusing) of possible solutions, and we find them in the one-day stock-price flow. The periods of jumping, drifting and diffusing were about 2, 3.5, and 6 minutes for the Kia stock on 11/05/2014. Also, the semiotic sign (icon, index, symbol) can be expected from the equations.

  • This study is to figure out the activity and disposition of gifted students with face plot in exploratory data analysis at middle school mathematics class. This study has begun on the basis of the doing mathematics at multivariate analysis beyond one variable and two variables. Gifted students were developed the good learning habits theirselves. According to this result, Many gifted students have an interesting experience at data analysis with Face Plot. And they felt the useful methods of creative thinking about graphics with doing mathematics at mathematical tasks. I think that teachers need to learn the visualization methods and to make and to develop the STEAM education tasks connected real life. It should be effective enough to change their attitudes toward teaching and learning at exploratory data analysis.

  • A defect in an image is a set of pixels forming an irregular shape. Since a defect, in most cases, is not easy to be modeled mathematically, the defect detection problem still resides in a research area. If a given image, however, composed by certain patterns, a defect can be detected by the fact that a non-defect area should be explained by another patch in terms of a rotation, translation, and noise. In this paper, therefore, the defect detection method for a repeated multi-patterned image is proposed. The proposed defect detection method is composed of three steps. First step is the interest point detection step, second step is the selection step of a appropriate patch size, and the last step is the decision step. The proposed method is illustrated using SEM images of semiconductor wafer samples.

  • This study was on autobiographical traditions, in particular, autobiographies of teachers. First, autobiographical method was suggested as a kind of qualitative inquiry on the teaching mathematics. Second, as a case of autobiographical method, autobiographies of an elementary school teacher were presented. In the case, the author of autobiographies was also a researcher. It showed the struggles of elementary school teacher to know and to practice her teaching mathematical patterns. Autobiographies of teachers can be used as good sources for reflection of teachers, and also as a method for teachers education. And then, for communicating with teaching strategies among teachers in communities, they can be used. One the other hand, autobiographies of teachers can be powerful materials for researches on teaching.

  • This study is aimed at providing the theoretical framework of characteristics of mathematical thinking processes and structuring the thinking process patterns of the mathematical gifted students through the analysis of their cognitive thinking processes. For this purpose, this study is trying to analyze characteristics of mathematical thinking processes of the mathematical gifted students in an objective and a systematic way, by using think-aloud method. For comparative study, the analysis framework with the use of the thinking characteristic code as a content-oriented method and the problem-solving processes code as a process-oriented method was developed, and the differences of thinking characteristics between the two groups chosen by the coding system which represented the subjects' thinking processes in the form of the language protocol through thinking-aloud method were compared and analyzed.
