  • To assure the structural integrity for the hub and low speed shaft (LSS) of the drive train, it is necessary to obtain the ultimate aerodynamic loads acting on the wind turbine blade. The aim of this study is to predict the time histories of 3 forces and 3 moments at the hub and the LSS based on the design load case of the IEC 61400-1. From the calculated results most of the load components have rotor revolution frequency whereas thrust and torque of the LSS show blade passage frequency. It turns out that the EWM wind condition involves the maximum ultimate loads at both hub and LSS of the horizontal axis wind turbine.

  • The optimum design and the performance analysis software called POSEIDON for the HAWT [Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine] was developed by use of BEMT. The Prandtl's tip loss theory was adopted to consider the blade tip loss. The lift and the drag coefficient of S-809 airfoil were predicted via X-FOIL and also the post stall characteristics of S-809 were estimated by the Viterna's equations. All the predicted aerodynamic characteristics are fairly well agreed with the wind tunnel test results, performed by Sommers in Delft university of technology. The rated power of the testing rotor is 20kW[FIL-20] at design conditions. The experimental aerodynamic parameters and the X-FOIL data were used for the power prediction of the FIL-20 respectively. The comparison results shows good agreement in power prediction.

  • This paper discusses about the mathematical modelling of a new conceptual shape of horizontal axis wind turbine. The geometrical characteristic of wind turbine is studied for the variation of azimuthal angles and elevation angles. The projecting trajectories of Cuban-8 blade due to rotation are analyzed on the each plane in the Cartesian coordinate system. Trajectories show several interesting graphical patterns since the geometrical shape is complicated with the rotational motion of two twisted circumferential blades with elevation angles.

  • The purpose of this work is to compare and analyze computed results with experimental data of NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) Phase VI for the whole operating conditions of various wind speeds using $\kappa-\omega$ turbulence model provided in the commercial code, FLUENT. Performance results such as power coefficient, shaft torque, pressure coefficient show a good agreement with experimental data. But, root bending moment is over-predicted than the experimentally measured value by about 30% for the whole operating conditions because of indefinite measurement reference. Nevertheless, these results qualitatively show a good tendency in the aspect of aerodynamic performance. As wind speed increases, streamlines on the surface of blade show more and more complex pattern.

  • The large scale wind turbine blades usually experience periodic change of inflow speed due to blade rotation inside the ground shear flow region. Because of the vertical wind shear, the inflow velocity in the boundary layer region is maximum at uppermost position and minimum at lowermost position. These spatial distribution of wind speeds can lead to the periodic oscillation of the 6-component loads at hub and low speed shaft of the wind turbine rotor. In this study we compare the aerodynamic loads between two inflow conditions, i.e, uniform flow (no vertical wind shear effect) and normal wind profile. From the computed results all of the relative errors for oscillating amplitudes increased due to the ground shear flow effect. Especially bending moment and thrust at hub, and bending moments at LSS increased enormously. It turns out that the aerodynamic analysis including the ground shear flow effect must be considered for fatigue analysis.

  • In this work, 1 MW class horizontal axis wind turbine blade configuration is properly sized and analyzed using the newly proposed aerodynamic design procedure and the in-house code developed by authors, and its design results are verified through comparison with experimental results of previously developed wind turbine blade. The structural design of the wind turbine blade is carried out using a composite materials and the netting and rule of mixture deign methods. The structural safety of the designed blade structure is investigated through the various load cases, stress, deformation, buckling and vibration analyses using the commercial FEM code, MSC.NASTRAN. Finally the required fatigue life is investigated using the modified Spera's experimental equation.

  • Optimal aerodynamic design for the pitch-controlled horizontal axis wind turbine and its aerodynamic performance for various pitch angles are performed numerically by using the blade element momentum theory. The numerical calculation includes effects such as Prandtl‘s tip loss, airfoil distribution, and wake rotation. Six different airfoils are distributed along the blade span, and the special airfoil i.e. airfoil of 40% thickness ratio is adopted at the hub side to have structural integrity. The nonlinear chord obtained from the optimal design procedure is linearized to decrease the weight and to increase the productivity with very little change of the aerodynamic performance. From the comparisons of the power, thrust, and torque coefficients with corresponding values of different pitch angles, the aerodynamic performance shows delicate changes for just $3^{\circ}$ increase or decrease of the pitch angle. For precisive pitch control, it requires the pitch control algorithm and its drive mechanism below $3^{\circ}$ increment of pitch angle. The maximum torque is generated when the speed ratio is smaller than the designed one.

  • In this paper, a free wake analysis based on the curved vortex element and CVC wake model is used to predict the aerodynamic performance and noise for HAWT. Also for prediction of RPM, a maximum value through a quadratic regression was suggested. And for a noise prediction, the broadband noise prediction method based on experimental equation was used. The curved vortex element uses a BCVE and an SIVE instead of a straight vertex element. In the CVC wake model, the vortex strengths are assumed to be constant along a span and a vortex filament. The free wake structure made by the curved vortex element and CVC was substituted for a vortex lattice, so it has an advantage for the less calculation time and a depiction of accurate wake structure. For the verification of this program, calculated results are compared with Mr. Kim's experiment model and Zond Z-40FS for performance and with WTS-4 and USWP models for noise. Good agreements are obtained between the predicted and the measured data for the performance and far-field noise spectra.

  • Time series data of 6-component loads were computed for a horizontal axis wind turbine rotor in yawed operating conditions with both rotating and non-rotating coordinate systems fixed at a center of a rotor hub. In this study, a well-known 20 kW class of the NREL Phase VI rotor was used for a model wind turbine, and this paper focuses on the yaw moments and over-turning moments for the operating wind speed range between 6 to 25 m/s. Unsteady blade element momentum theorem was adopted to get the aerodynamic loads acting on the wind turbine rotor. Computed 6-component loads using the developed UBEM code were compared with those using the NREL FAST program. From the computed results, both yaw and over-turning moments would be basic inputs to determine not only the specification of yawing mechanism but also the design condition of foundation.
