Current seismic design code is based on the assumption that the designed structures would be behaved inelastically during a severe earthquake ground motion. For this reason, seismic design forces calculated by seismic codes are much lower than the forces generated by design earthquakes which makes structures responding elastically. Present procedures for calculating seismic design forces are based on the use of elastic spectra reduced by a strength reduction factors known as "response modificaion factor". Because these factors were determined empirically, it is difficult to know how much inelastic behaviors of the structures exhibit. In this study, lateral strength required to maintain target ductility ratio was first calculated from nonlinear dynamic analysis of the single degree of freedom system. At the following step, base shear foeces specified in seismic design code compare with above results. If the base shear force required to maintain target ductility ratio was higher than the code specified one, the lack of required strength should be filled by overstrength and/or redundancy. Therefore, overstrength of moment resisting frame structure will be estimated from the results of push-over analysis.
This paper deals with the exploratory study & experimentation for foundation & theoretical base of menu structuring & design improvement of digital media (IPTV, Digital cable TV) service players. Digital media service providers had been offered many cases of menu structure since their service launched. Researcher set a research topic which verification of eye tracking velocity when media user feels with perceived ease of design and the familiarity. Researcher arrives at a conclusion through as stated above experiment that vertical type of menu and horizontal type of menu are differentiated from the contents characteristics. Research conclusions & implications are strong theoretical base with digital media service players when they planning and designing their service structuring.
Three-dimensional electromagnetic modeling algorithm in homogeneous half-space was developed using the extended Born approximation to an electric field integral equation. To examine the performance of the extended Born approximation algorithm, the results were compared with those of the full integral equation results. For a crosshole source-receiver configuration, the agreement between the integral equation and the extended Born approximation was remarkable when the source frequency is lower than 20 kHz and conductivity contrast lower than 1:10. Beyond this conductivity contrast, the simulated results by the extended Born approximation exhibit a difference with respect to those by the integral equation. Therefore, the limit of accuracy lies below contrast of 1:10 in the extended Born approximation. Since for the source frequency range from 20 kHz to 100 kHz, however, the difference is relatively small, the extended Born approximation could be used for a reasonable 3-D EM modeling algorithm.
Poly(vinyl pivalate)(PVPi) telomer containing bifunctional end groups was synthesized through radical telomerization of vinyl pivalate. The number-average molecular weight ($\bar{M}$n) of the synthesized telomers was investigated by GPC, $^1$H-NMR, and viscometric methods. PVPi telomers having a number-average molecular weight ($\bar{M}$n) of 2400~1300 g/mol were obtained. In order to control the molecular weight of telomers, chain transfer constants ($C_s$) of telogen ($CCl_4$) were determined by using the Mayo equation and simulation, which were 1.15, 1.16, and 1.18 at 40, 50, and 6$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. $\bar{M}$n of the synthesized telomers at 6$0^{\circ}C$ were between 5100 and 5400 g/mol at conversion of increasing from 18 to 72%. Those are corresponding to simulation results.
We investigated gravitropic responses in the primary root of maize (Zea mays) seedlings which were exposed to salt stress. The maize roots salt-stressed with higher than 100 mM NaCl or KCl started to reveal enhanced gravitropic curvature after 2 hours form the gravi-stimulation. Such a promotion was not caused by sodium phosphate, but invoked by potassium phosphate, indicating the active component is $K^{+}$. Because NaCl increased gravitropic curvature, despite that $Na^{+}$ did not played any role, we evaluated the role for $Cl^{-}$ by comparing the effects of $MgCl_2$ and $MgSO_4$. The enhancement of the curvature only with $MgCl_2$ revealed that $Cl^{-}$ played a role in the gravi-response, indicating the involvement of anion channels. These results suggest that both of $K^{+}$ and $Cl^{-}$ play roles in the regulation of osmosis that is required for cell expansion in gravitropism as well as in nyctinasty and stomatal opening.

The importance of the vertical response of a structure was well recognized after the Hyogoken-Nanbu earthquake of Japan. However, most of the seismic design codes does not specified the site sail profiles, and the sail and foundations conditions were mostly neglected in the vertical seismic analyses of a structure. In this paper, the effects of foundation size, sail layer depth under the foundation, foundation embedment and pile foundation on the vertical seismic response spectra for both surface and embedded mat foundation were studied to investigate the effects of the soft soil layer on the vertical response of a structure excited with the vertical components of Taft and El Centro earthquakes, considering the sail profile types of $S_A,S_C,S_E$ in UBC-97, the medium and large size foundations, the soil layer depth under the foundation of 30 and 60m, the foundation embedment of 0 and 15m, and the precast reinforced concrete bearing piles installed in the soft soil deposit. According to the study results, the foundation size has a little effect on the vertical seismic response, However, the soil layer depth under the foundation of 60m has to be considered for the vertical seismic analysis of a structure as for the horizontal one. The embedded pile foundations as well as the surface ones built on the soft soil layer amplified the vertical seismic response of a structure very much.
We synthesized polyester-diol containing Cloisite 30B which is exfoliated during the synthesis. First, esterification was conducted with excess adipic acids and two 2-hydroxyethyl groups of the tertiary ammonium tethered to Cloisite 30B silicate layer. Due to the small molecular size of adipic acid ($d{\approx}3.0\;{\AA}$, $L{\approx}9.3\;{\AA}$), it penetrated into the interlayer of Cloisite 30B, reacted with the 2-hydroxyethyl groups, and produced the tertiary ammonium that has the two ethyl-ester adipic acid groups, one methyl group, and one hydrogenated alkyl group. Through the esterification, the molecular size of the tertiary ammonium increased and as the result, the basal space of Cloisite 30B increased from $18.4\;{\AA}$ to more than $58.3\;{\AA}$. The produced ethyl-ester adipic acid and unreacted adipic acid reacted with excess diethylene glycol ([COOH]/[OH]${\approx}0.6$) to be polyester-diol. The COOH conversion calculated from the acid value of the reactant mixture was 94%. The number average molecular weight and PDI of the produced polyester-diol were 830 g/mol and 1.2, respectively.
Polycrystalline silicon carbide (SiC) thick films were depostied by low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) using CH3SiCl3 (MTS) and H2 gaseous mixture onto isotropic graphite substrate. Effects of deposition variables on the SiC film were investigated. Deposition rate had been found to be surface-reaction controlled below reactor temperature of 120$0^{\circ}C$ and mass-transport controlled over 125$0^{\circ}C$. Apparent activation energy value decreased below 120$0^{\circ}C$ and deposition rate decreased above 125$0^{\circ}C$ by depletion effect of the reactant gas in the direction of flow in a horizontal hot wall reactor. Microstructure of the as-deposited SiC films was strongly influenced by deposition temperature and position. Microstructural change occurred greater in the mass transport controlled region than surface reaction controlled region. The as-deposited SiC layers in this experiment showed stoichiometric composition and there were no polytype except for $\beta$-SiC. The preferred orientation plane of the polycrystalline SiC layers was (220) plane at a high reactant gas concentration in the mass transfer controlled region. As depletion effect of reactant concentration was increased, SiC films preferentially grow as (111) plane.
Mid-range vinylidene content polyisobutylenes were prepared by using a Lewis acid catalyst. The best results were obtained when a complex catalyst composed of n-propanol as a cocatalyst and $BF_3$ as a main catalyst was used at the reaction temperature of -8 to $5^{\circ}C$ under a pressure of $2.5kg/cm^2$. The number average molecular weight ($M_n$) and viscosity of the polyisobutylenes were 500~1,000 g/mol and 20~210 cSt (at $100^{\circ}C$), respectively. The vinylidene content was 40~70% and easily varied by adjusting the reaction temperature.
By the reaction of m-cresol as a microbicide with acryloyl chloride m-cresyl acrylate (CA) was synthesized, and polymers with the moiety of m-cresol were prepared by the radical terpolymerization of CA -methylmethacrylate -acrylic acid. The contents of CA unit in the polymers were found to be 4.7 mol% and 10.1 mol% from their nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. The number -average molecular weights of the polymers were in the range of 12000 to 15000. Through the hydrolysis of the polymers m-cresol was released. The release rate of the microbicide increased with increasing PH of the release medium. This result can be attributed to enhanced proton dissociation of carboxyl group of the acrylic acid unit in the polymers. These polymers showed microbicidal activities for S. aureus as a positive microbe and E. coli as a negative microbe.
