A profiling monitoring system has been developed to monitor the water quality variations according to each water depth and applied for a test-bed. The key parameters were derived to disclose the aquatic ecology and environment of river systems, and the real-time monitoring techniques to profile the variations of each parameter were verified. Monitoring parameters were configured to include water quality, hydrodynamic, and weather conditions. Considering the water depth of the 4 major rivers in Korea, a profiling monitoring system with 1.0 m water depth interval for each monitoring has been established. To understand the real-time variation properties in the Han river, the monitoring system has been installed and operated at the YangHwa-Dock as a test-bed. Based on the results of the detailed analyses on the spring season, as the characteristic diurnal and water-depth-related variations for water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and chlorophyll-a were observed, it could be concluded that the real-time water-depth profiling monitoring system is a very effective tool for the proper management of river environment.

The results of long-term groundwater level and quality monitoring can be used not only as the basic data for evaluating the impact of various disasters including climate change and establishing responses, but also as key data for predicting and managing geological disasters such as earthquakes. Some countries use groundwater level and quality monitoring for researches to predict earthquakes and to assess the impacts of the earthquake disaster. However, a few cases in Korea report on individual groundwater quality factors (i.e., dissolved ions) observed before and after the earthquakes, being different from other countries. To establish the abnormality criteria for groundwater quality in Pohang, groundwater samples were collected and analyzed five times from 14 agricultural or private wells existing in Shingwang-myeon and Heunghae-eup. As a result of the analysis, it was found that Ca2+ was the dominant cation in Shingwang-myeon, while Na+ was the dominant cation in Heunghae-eup. The elevated NO3- concentration in Shingwang-myeon is contributed to the agricultural activity in the area. A high concentration of Fe was detected in a well on Heunghae-eup; the concentration exceeded the drinking water standard by nearly 100 times. Relatively higher dissolved ions were observed in the groundwater of Heunghae-eup, and it is considered as the result of the flow velocity difference and water-rock reaction accompanying the difference in bedrock and sediment characteristics. The groundwater of Shingwang-myeon appeared to be most affected by the weathering of granite and silicates, while that of Heunghae-eup was mainly affected by the weathering of silicates and carbonate. The background concentrations (baselines) of groundwater Shingwang-myeon and Heunghae-eup was identified through the survey; however, the continuous monitoring is required to monitor the possible changes and the repeatability of seasonal variation.

For the better understanding of long-term and seasonal variations of water quality in Masan Bay, South Sea of Korea, we analyzed the archive data monitored at three stations of the bay during the last 13 years (2000-2012). The average concentrations of the chemical oxygen demand (COD), the dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and the dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) during the monitoring period are $2.70{\pm}0.09{\mu}/L$, $19.66{\pm}1.84{\mu}m$ and $1.39{\pm}0.13{\mu}m$ in surface water, respectively, and $2.22{\pm}0.07{\mu}/L$, $18.53{\pm}1.36{\mu}m$ and $1.47{\pm}0.12{\mu}m$ in bottom water, respectively. The trophic state of the surface water was the eutrophic level in Masan Bay during the four seasons. The DIN concentrations of both surface and bottom waters increased from August to November and showed the highest average in November. However, The DIN decreased from February to May and showed the lowest average in May. The concentrations of the DIP and the dissolved silicate (DSi) in bottom waters had the highest averages in August because of the high water temperature and oxygen deficient condition. The results of correlation analysis and factor analysis showed that the main factors of surface waters were inflow of nutrients from terrestrial areas and internal production, and the main factors of bottom waters were the variations of the dissolved oxygen (DO), the DIP, and the DSi. The DIN and DIP average concentrations (2007~2012) had decreased in range of 68.1%~76.0% and 66.2~76.6%, respectively from 2007 in which the "Regulation of Total Emission" was established in Masan Bay. Therefore, it could have had positive effects on water quality improvement to take the "Regulation of Total Emission" and other actions such as reducing water pollutions in Masan Bay from 2007.
Long-term trends (e.g. 1997~2010) of chlorophyll a and water quality properties of the Yeongsan River were analyzed by using water quality monitoring data collected by the water information system, ministry of environment. Nine monitoring stations were selected along the main channel of the river, and parameters of BOD, COD, TN, TP, conductivity, TSS and chlorophyll a were collected for surface water monthly through the monitoring system. Trends of water quality and chlorophyll a were analyzed by the Seasonal Mann-Kendall Test and LOWESS (Locally Weighted Scatter-plot Smoother). The results showed that the water quality parameters, including chlorophyll a, were improved in all stations except Station WC in the most-upper region, where water quality data for the determined parameters were increased, indicating a reduction in water quality. Based on the results from LOWESS analysis, chlorophyll a (algal blooms), BOD and COD recently began to increase after 2007 suggesting that an additional study on the cause of these increases in organic pollution, as well as a better management system for the region are required.

Water quality data including flow rates and BOD/COD/T-N/T-P/SS/TOC concentrations in Nakdong river tributaries were analyzed to determine priority management areas using 699 data sets from 195 locations in 2015. It was pointed out that the coefficients of variation, the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean, for the concentrations and loading rates of BOD, T-P, and TOC in each monitoring location were so large that average values of water quality monitoring data might be not appropriate to determine the priority management areas among all 195 monitoring stations in Nakdoing river. Therefore we suggested two evaluation methods using each water quality data independently. In the first method the excess numbers of the BOD, T-P, and TOC concentrations comparing to the water quality standards in the medium-sized management areas in Nakdong river was evaluated for each monitoring station. In the second method the percentile ranks of the loading rates of the BOD, T-P, and TOC were obtained for each monitoring data. The two groups of the priority management areas determined by each method were compared and the water quality characteristics in Nakdoing river were investigated.

We examined the effects of pollutants into sub-basin on the water quality and loading based on data surveyed during January-December 2013 from 13 sites of 5 streams in the Jinwi watershed. We used the contour plot and Kruskal-Wallis rank sum test to analyze seasonal variation of water quality and loading and Pearson correlation analysis to assess the relationships between pollutants and loadings. The significantly higher seasonal variation were SS, TN and TOC as compared to other water quality constituents (P < 0.001). A significant interaction existed between the effects of human population and the effects of discharge of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) on water quality and loading, especially for the spring and winter seasons. It is necessary to control discharge water of sewage and wastewater from industrial facilities and to make full use of the watershed management system such as TMDLs in operation since 2012 for improvement in stream water quality.
Water quality fluctuation of Gyeongan water area in Paldang reservoir, which measured from the downstream sampling point of Gyeongan stream (G1) to dam sampling point (P), was examined in the light of seasonal rainfall and regional difference in the year of 2002. Annual COD, T-P and T-N concentration dropped conspicuously at the point P (in front of dam) although concentration of Gl point was high. Concentration variation of COD, T-P and T-N from Gl to P point in Gyeongan area was small in August and September. And at G l point showed relatively low concentration. Chlorophyll-a concentration varies less during the autumn season (October to December) than spring season (March to June). Water temperature of Bughangang (north Han-river) area was relatively lower in August and higher in November compared with that of other areas. COD and SS concentration showed big regional difference except in November when the concentrations of which were relatively low. The high Chlorophyll-a concentration of April fell conspicuously in rainy season. Gyeongan area, where the water depth is relatively shallow, indicated steep temperature gradient in April compared with that in August or November. High 55 concentration in April at P point characterized surface layer while the opposite was recorded in August. Mixing of upper and lower layers had taken place causing dilution of COD, T-N and T-P concentration in August. This condition was maintained throughout November. Therefore, spring-summer seasons needed more attention for water management countermeasure than summer-autumn seasons.

A stochastic model using FOEA(First-Order Error-Analysis) and Monte Carlo Method is developed to predict water quality variation in a river. A sensitivity analysis using influential matrix is performed to determine the significant reaction coefficients. Also the BFGS (Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno) optimization method is applied to estimate the optimal values of the major reaction coefficients. The developed stochastic model is applied to the real study reach and the results are agreed well with those of deterministic analysis. The process for analyzing the uncertainties of the discharge, water quality and reaction coefficients of headwater and tributaries is included in the model to estimate the influence on the water quality variation at downstream. The extents of contribution of the uncertainties influencing on the total uncertainty can be evaluated from the results of the model.
