The roughness of rock joint is one of the most important parameters in developing the shear resistance and the tendency of dilation. Due to the damage accumulated with shearing displacement, the roughness angle is lowered continuously. It is known that dilation, shear strength hardening, and softening are directly related to the degradation of asperities. Much effort has been directed to incorporate the complicated damage mechanism of asperities into a constitutive model fur rock joints. This study presents an elasto-plastic formulation of joint behavior including elastic deformability, dilatancy and asperity surface damage. It is postulated that the plastic portion of incremental displacement 7an be decomposed into contributions from both sliding along the asperity surface and damage of asperity. Numerical cyclic shear tests are presented to illustrate th? performance of the derived incremental stress-displacement relation. A laboratory cyclic shear test is also simulated. Numerical examples reveal that the elasto-plastic joints model is promising.
The scale effect of specimens on the shear behavior of joints is studied by performing direct shear tests on six different sizes in Granite. The peak and residual shear stress, shear displacement, shear stiffness, and dilation angle are measured with the different normal stress(0.29~2.65MPa) and roughness parameters. It is also shown that both the joint roughness coefficient(JRC) and the joint compression strength(JCS) reduce with increasing joint length. A series of shear tests show about 56~67% reduction in peak shear stress, and about 18~44% in residual shear stress, respectively as the contact area of joint increases from 12.25 to $361cm^2$. Also the variation of dilation angle is $27^{\circ}$ at normal stress of 0.29 MPa and $6^{\circ}$ at normal stress of 2.65 MPa, respectively. The envelopes considering scale effect for JRC are made for the peak shear strength of rock joint in comparison with the Barton's equation.
Two orthogonal joint sets develop well only in sandstone beds in the sandstone-mudstone sequences of Gumi and Dasa outcrops within Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin. And various joint data are similar in the beds of the same thickness in both outcrops, meaning that the joint sets were homogeneously produced by extensional deformation in the same regional stress field. Most of joints in the sandstone beds are orthogonal to, and confined by bed boundaries, which are believed to be formed by hydrofracturing during consolidation after burial. Two orthogonal joint sets are considered to be almost coeval on the basis of mutual abutting relationship which makes up fracture grid-lock and a product of rapid switching of ${\sigma}_2$ and ${\sigma}_3$ axes with constant ${\sigma}_1$ direction oriented to vertical. The joint sets in the sandstone beds show planar surfaces, parallel orientations and regular spacing, with joint spacing linearly proportional to bed thickness. The spacing distributions of the joints seem to correspond to log-normal to almost normal distribution in most of the beds. But multilayer joints do not display regular spacing and dominant size. Either joint set in this study is characterized by a high level of joint density and a saturated spacing distribution as indicated by the mode/mean ratio values and the Cv(coefficient of variance) values. Joint aperture tends to increase with the vertical length of the joints controlled by bed thickness.
Cheongryangsan area ($49.51km^2$) has been designated as the Provincial Park in 1982, because it has magnificent aspect and seasonally spectacular landscapes. Especially, Cheongryangsa sitey ($4.09km^2$) has been designated as Noted Scenery No. 23 in 2007, because it has the same topographical landscape as rock cliffs, rock peaks and caves. The most spectacular landscapes are exhibited in the Cheongryangsan Conglomerate and Osipbong Basalt. There are twelve rock peaks on the ridges of the two strata, and many rock cliffs in the several valleys of strata, in which a few caves are formed by differential weathering and erosion. The valleys, in which flow Cheongryang, Bukgok and Cheonae streams, are classified as fault valleys along WNW-ESE faults. The rock cliffs were generated from vertical joints parallel to WNW-ESE faults in the two strata, and the caves were formed by differential weathering and erosion along bedding of sandstones and shales intercalated in the conglomerates. The rock peaks are landscapes formed by differential erosion along crossed vertical joints in the ridges. The vertical joints are developed subparallel to two WNW-ESE faults and a NNE-WWS fault. Therefore the topographical features are caused by existence of the faults and Lithologic difference in the Cheongryangsan Conglomerate and Osipbong Basalt, and by differential weathering and erosion along them.
It is well-known that when single rock fractures undergo shear displacement, they are influenced by the boundary conditions and fracture roughness. In this case, aperture geometry will change by means of dilation due to the shear displacement. As fractures become the flow paths, fluid flow through rock fractures is affected by the void geometry. In this study, therefore, the influence of roughness on shear behavior of fractures has been investigated, and the resulting hydraulic behavior has been analyzed. In order for this study, a statistical method has been used to generate rough fractures, and they have been adopted into new conceptual models fur fracture shearing and flow calculations. The main contributions of this study are as follows: firstly, fracture shear behavior becomes less brittle with decreasing fracture roughness and increasing normal stress. Then, the characteristics of aperture distribution becomes those of roughness of fractures indicating its hydraulic significance. Finally, it is observed that with decreasing fracture roughness the breakdown of channel flow occurs more slowly.
Rock joint surface roughness, which is known to be one of the most important factors for defining shear strength of rock mass, has been researched in various methods. However, approaches to separate a roughness into two groups (primary and secondary) for evaluating the roughness have been rarely performed. In this study, elements of secondary roughness were eliminated through direct shear testing with tensile joint specimen and they were quantified with joint parameters. It is revealed that roughness parameters decrease with increasing the normal stress and sampling intervals, except for the case in which the normal stress is larger than 1.5 MPa. Also it is analyzed that ratio of area reduction in the opposite direction of shearing decreases with increasing the roughness parameter.
This study undertakes an evaluation of blast effect through the analysis of the contribution rate and effect that different artificial joint number, artificial joint spacing and artificial joint angle have on blast velocity. Blast velocity according to the different state of the artificial joint was obtained using AUTODYN, a dynamic analysis program. The result of the numerical analysis was subjected to further normalization analysis. For the contribution rate of design factors was analyzed using the robust design method. The orthogonal array used in the analysis was $L_9(3^4)$ and each parameters were having 3 levels. The result of normalization analysis regarding the artificial joint angle was indicated a tendency in which blast velocity decreased. The result of analyzing blast velocity regarding artificial joint spacing and artificial joint angle was indicated a tendency in which blast velocity decreased as artificial joint spacing increased when the angle was perpendicular. In the case of blast velocity contribution rates they were ranked in the descending order of artificial joint angle, artificial joint number, artificial joint spacing.
Limit equilibrium method is widely used for the stability analysis of soil slopes. In jointed rock slopes however, the failure of the slope is largely dependent upon the strength and deformability of the joints in the rock mass and quite often failure occurs along the joints. This paper describes the use of ubiquitous joint model for the stability analysis of the jointed rock slopes. This model is essentially an anisotropic elasto-plastic model and can simulate two sets of joint in arbitrary orientations. Validation of the developed with the factor of safety equal to unity was selected when the shape of the failure plane is assumed log spiral. Then the factor of safety of the rock slope having two perpendicular joint sets was calculated while rotating joint orientations. Rusults were compared with limit equilibrium solutions on soil slopes having equivalent soil properties when plane sliding was assumed. Developed model predicted the factor of safety of jointed rock slope in a reasonable accuracy when joint spacing is sufficiently small.
In order to reduce ground vibration during tunnel excavation, a free surface blasting method has been applied in which a partial free surface is formed on the excavation surface and controlled blasting is performed. In this study, the ground vibration reduction due to artificial joints was evaluated by forming artificial joints on center cut using diamond wire saw and comparing the ground vibration caused by center cut blasting. As a result of comparison, ground vibration was reduced by artificial joints center cut blasting more than normal center cut blasting, and the ground vibration reduction effect of horizontal artificial joints center cut blasting was evaluated more than that of vertical artificial joint center cut blasting.
