Analysis of Liquid-Propellant Rocket Engine(KL-3) Unstable Combustion Characteristics of Vertical Installation (수직장착에서의 액체추진제 로켓엔진(KL-3) 불안정 연소특성에 관한 연구)

  • To perform combined tests with propellant feeding system and engine, which were developed for KSR-III launcher, vertical test stand was organized and a series of hot-fire combustion tests were carried out with engines of several injector faceplate types. In hot-fire tests in vertical installation, combustion instabilities occurred right after ignition with an engine without baffle, and such combustion instabilities did not occur at ignition add during mainstage operation for an engine with STS or composite baffle. 1.regular and temporary pressure pulsations(popping) were detected during steady operation with a baffle engine, however a development to combustion instabilities with resonant mode was highly suppressed by baffle. With a series of tests, it was confirmed that the last developed engine, which has composite baffle, was operated successfully in KSR-III flight propulsion system.

  • Thrust measuring is one of the crucial factor to decide the performance of a liquid rocket engine when the engine development test, especially for the combustion chamber, is implemented. Calculating the thrust from a combustion pressure is used when direct measuring the thrust is impossible, but direct measuring the thrust is necessary and various methods for doing it more precisely should be considered. This paper introduces the preliminary design concept about the new thrust measurement system for the vertical firing test stand, which is introduced domestically for the first time, of a liquid rocket engine combustion chamber.

  • 연소방지재(난연테이프, 난연도료, 난연seal, 난연레진, 난연보드 등)란 지중 배전케이블, 접속재 및 통신케이블 등의 외피에 화재확산 방지를 위해 도포하여 사용하는 것으로서 화재 시 발포하거나 단열의 효과가 있어 케이블, 전선 등이 연소하는 것을 지연시킨다. 따라서 본 평가 기술에서는 수직불꽃시험, 산소지수, 저 염소시험, 발연농도, 케이블 허용전류저감률 등 주 재료시험에 대한 시험방법을 검토하고 시험에 적용하여 시험 시 문제점을 도출하여 시험방법을 정립하고자 한다.

  • A layout plan of a pressure-fed test facility to carry out hot-firing test of liquid rocket engine combustion chamber and purpose of rooms located in the test building were proposed. The layout plan of suggested infrastructure in this paper was determined depending on the design of a vertical test facility to use the natural lay of the land and simulate the initial position of flight model.

  • A vertical hot-firing test facility was established to carry out the IPPT(Integrated Propulsion Performance Test) and SQT(Stage Qualification Test) of KSR-III(Korea Sounding Rocket-III). The components for actual launcher were mostly used, hence these tests were carried out under the condition of relatively lower safety margin. To perform hot-firing tests with the maximum safety, an engine emergency blockage system was investigated and applied. An emergency blockage system using combustion chamber pressures and acceleration signals was set up to monitor ignition delay and fail, flame out, propellant feeding status, unstable combustion and excessive structural vibration. With such a system, the test safety could be secured by rapid judgement and follow-up measures, which made IPPT and SQT be safely completed.

  • To reduce human life and property damage at the fire in a building, it is most critical to control flame spread in the early stage. Fire spread prevention measure generally includes fire resistance performance securing of structure member in the arson zone and use limitation based on combustion performance of finishing material. The latter is most fundamental fire safety design to determine flame spread, but domestic combustion test determines combustion performance by specimen sized fire test method. Thus, there are many restrictions in the determination of combustion performance by composite material such as sandwich panel. Especially, outer finishing material uses a variety of composite material such as dry bit, aluminum composite panel, and metal panel compared to inner finishing material. Therefore, this study would determine vertical fire spread features by a full scaled fire experiment through the test method of ISO 13785-2, an international test standard.

  • Thrust is one of the crucial performance parameter of a combustion chamber in the combustion chamber development test. So it is very important to measure an accurate thrust. Thrust calibration test was performed to identify the system characteristics, resistance and linearity of a vertical thrust measurement system(TMS) for accurate thrust measurement. It has been found 6.9% ~ 8.6% errors between the measured thrust by TMS calibration equations and theoretical thrust. It has been confirmed that the TMS calibration is necessary to be performed with the propellant lines connected to the combustion chamber for accurate thrust measurement.

  • 스크램 제트 엔진의 설계에서 초음속으로 유입된 공기의 짧은 잔류시간으로 인한 연료-공기의 혼합은 가장 중요하며 해결하기 힘든 문제이다. 전헝적인 비행 조건에서 흡입 공기가 극초음속 비행기 엔진 내에서 잔류하는 시간의 단위는 1 ms 정도이어서 짧은 시간 동안 연료와 공기는 효율적으로 혼합되어야 하며, 최대의 추진력을 얻기 위하여 과도한 공력저항없이 연소 가능한 연료-공기 혼합기를 생성시킬 수 있는 효율적인 연료-공기의 혼합 방법이 요구된다. 현재까지 가장 많이 연구되어 온 혼합 방법은 엔진 입구로 들어오는 공기 유동에 수직 방향으로 연료를 분사하는 것으로 이 방법은 연료 유동 방향과 공기 유동 방향이 수직이기 때문에 추력 손실이 생기는 단점을 갖고 있지만, 초음속으로 유입되는 공기에 수직으로 연료를 분사하게되면 분사 위치 앞에 궁형 충격파가 생겨서 감속되어 유동이 회전하는 재순환영역이 생기고 연료의 혼합이 잘 이루어지는 장점이 있다.
