In order to recover tin from the waste tin plating solution, we used the ion exchange method using three types of ion exchange resins. The ion exchange resin with tertiary functional group(Lewatit TP 272) has not adsorption ratio of tin. The ion exchange resin with iminodiacetic functional group(Lewatit TP 207) has high adsorption ratio of tin, but impurity content in the recovered tin solution was relatively high. Whereas, in case of the ion exchange resin with functional group of ethylhexyl-phosphate(Lewatit VP OC 1026), adsorption ratio of tin was less than that of Lewatit TP 207. However, it was possible to remove impurities in the recovered tin solution by controlling the pH of the solution. High purity tin solution can be recovered by removing the organic materials with water washing process.
The selective absorption of metal ions by chelating agent-loaded resins was studied in aqueous media. The resins were prepared by loading the conventional anion exchange resin, Dowex 1-X8 (50 to 100 mesh) with chelating agents containing sulfonic group, such as 8-hydroxy-quinoline-5-sulfonic acid (HQS) and 7-nitroso-8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid (NHQS). The stability of the resin was markedly influenced by the following factors; (1) the affinity and concentration of anions in the external solution, (2) the pH of the media. The optimum conditions for the absorption of metal ions were determined with respect to the pH, shaking time, and the effect of anion concentration in the medium. Under the optimum condition the order of the absorption of metal ions such as Fe(Ⅲ), Cu(Ⅱ), Pb(Ⅱ), and Zn(Ⅱ) was in accord with that of the stability constants of the chelates. The total capacities of the resins were found in the range of 0.6∼1.6 mmole metal per gram.
Low temperature cure prepregs are being developed for use in the preparation of large-structured fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites with good performance. Cure behavior and chemorheology of low temperature cure epoxy resin system, based on epoxy resin, curing agent, and accelerators, were investigated to provide a matrix resin suitable for the prepreg preparation. Characteristics of cure reaction were studied in both dynamic and isothermal conditions by means of differential scanning calorimetry and rheometry. The low temperature cure epoxy resin system suggested in this study as a matrix resin was curable at $80^{\circ}C$ for 3 h, and showed the gel times of 120 and 20 min at 80 and $90^{\circ}C$, respectively. Thermal and mechanical properties of the cured sample were almost the same as high temperature cure counterparts.

Mixed-bed ion exchange performance was studied experimentally with variations of cation to anion resin ratio, resin weight and temperature at ultralow sodium chloride solution concentrations of less than $1.0{\times}10^{-4}M$. Analyzing the effluent concentration histories the performance test was examined as a function of tested solution volume for a laboratory-scale continuous flow column until both the cation and anion-exchange resins were exhausted. Initial leakage was observed for both cation and anion breakthrough curves, but serious at cation breakthrough curve because of low selectivity coefficient. The slope of breakthrough curve was affected by selectivity coefficient and temperature. The slope of anion breakthrough curve was steep because of the large selectivity coefficient, and ion exchange rates increased as temperature increased. The temperature effect decreased as the total volume was increased or as the resins were exhausted.
The effect of a rapid freeze pretreatment of organic ion exchange resins on their grinding properties was studied. It was found that the structure of ion exchange resins was defected by freezing pressure formed in the process of rapid freezing. The defected resins didn't recover their own structure after thawing and those could be easy to be broken at room temperature by small force. Therefore, organic ion exchange resins could be ground readily at room temperature after rapid-freezing the fully swelled resins using by solid carbon dioxide, or liquid nitrogen. The rapid freeze pretreatment of cation exchange resins was very effective on grinding in particular. However, the effect of the pretreatment of anion exchange resins on grinding was less than that of cation exchange resins. In case of anion exchange resins, the ionic form of affected the grindability remarkably.
The methods of separation and recovery of rare earth elements in monazite sand have been studied by the ion exchange chromatography. Both of cation and anion exchange resin were used as ion exchange resins and the solutions of EDTA, DTPA, IMDA and Ln-EDTA were used as eluents. The H+, Zn2+, Fe3+, Al3+, Cu2+, and NH4+ forms of cation exchange resin were used as retaining ions. Ln-EDTA solution was loaded on the EDTA form of anion exchange resin and separated. The Ln-EDTA solution was also used as an eluent for a selective separation of one element from the rare earth mixture solution. The size effects of resin column, the elution mechanism for the various elution types and the separation of a large amount of rare earths were studied.
The adsorption mechanisms of phenols on XAD-2 and XAD-7 resins were studied by using the distribution coefficient(log Kd) measured in the optimum adsorption conditions. It was observed that the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, indicating a molecular size-dependent adsorption, was appropriate for characterizing the adsorption behaviors of phenols on XAD-2 and XAD-7 resins. The adsorption energies of phenols on XAD resins were calculated by Lennard-Jones potential equation. In the calculation of the adsorption energy, the molecular radii and dipole moments of the resins and phenols were calculated by their van der Waals volumes and Debye equation, respectively. The stacking factor (F) were determined from the radio of the equilibrium distance to the stacking distance of molecules. In order to explain the adsorption energy calculated from the stacking factor it was compared with the adsorption enthalpy for each of phenols which was experimentally determined by batch adsorption shake method. It was observed that the adsorption enthalpy of phenolate ions on the XAD resins was likely to be more seriously affected by dispersion interaction than by a dipole or a charge interaction.
Silicone resin has no water-absorbing function because it is a strong hydrophobic polymer. However, addition of super absorbent polymer gives much better absorbency than that of conventional silicone resin. In this study, we developed novel silicone materials with water-absorbing function by choosing three types of amorphous acrylic super absorbent polymers with different particle sizes, determining the mixing ratio of the three polymers and applying the mixtures into two-component type silicone material for medical purpose. The change in the mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tear strength, compressive strength and hardness was investigated by varying the particle size and content ratio of the added super absorbent polymers while preparing the silicone resins. The absorbency of the silicone resins was measured over time. Additionally, the particle shape of the super absorbent polymers as well as the distribution within the silicone resin was observed using an optical microscope.
The physical properties of the epoxy resins were studied with an addition of filler content and the application of artificial weathering test. When talc as a filler was added to the epoxy resin (L-30), the water resistance seemed to be increased because of the results of the reducing of water absorption rate and the increasing of contact angle. Although the adhesive strength of epoxy resins was not affected by the increasing amount of talc, its compressive strength was reduced. The physical properties of the epoxy resins had different trends according to the site environments. The artificial weathering test with the change of temperature and humidity showed that the changes of water absorption rate and colour differences of the epoxy resins containing talc were lower than the pure epoxy resin itself. However, the contact angle was higher. The artificial weathering test with ultraviolet irradiations showed the opposite result; the damage of epoxy resins was increased with the increasing of talc content. These mean the site environment of the stone monuments should be considered to determine the content of talc added to increase the durability of epoxy resin.
