A Study on the Characteristics of Underwater Sound Transmission by Short-term Variation of Sound Speed Profiles in Shallow-Water Channel with Thermocline (수온약층이 존재하는 천해역에서 단기간 음속구조 변화에 따른 음향 신호 전달 변동에 관한 연구)

  • Underwater acoustic channel impulse responses (CIR) are influenced by sound speed profile (SSP), and the variation of CIR has significant effects on the performance of underwater acoustic communication systems. A significant change of SSP can occur within a short period, which must be considered during the design of underwater acoustic modems. This paper statistically analyzes the effect of the variation of SSP on the long-range acoustic signal propagation in shallow-water with thermocline using numerical modeling based on the data acquired from JACE13 experiment near Jeju island. The analysis result shows that CIR changes variously according to the SSP and the depth of the transmitter and receiver. We also found that when the transmitter and receiver are deeper, the variation of sound wave propagation pattern is smaller and signal level becomes higher. All CIR obtained in this study show that a series of bottom reflections due to downward refraction and small bottom loss in the shallow water with thermocline can be very important factor for long-range signal transmission and the performance of underwater acoustic communication system in time varying ocean environment can be very sensitive to the variation of SSP even for a short period of time.

The Under Water Ambient Noise at Voting-il Bay (영일만 부근에서의 수중소음)

  • Underwater ambient noise level was measured at two points near the Youngil Bay. The environmental characteristics depend upon oceanographic conditions of sound propagation ana its implication on the source of ambient noise. Some noise sources were estimated, and the effect of the oceanographic conditions on the noise level variation had been considered. The results were as follows : 1) At the nearshore station of Youngil Bay, the ambient noise level in the near bottom(45m) was lower than that of the near surface(10m) by 15dB. This difference was due to spherical spreading from the upper to the lower layer. 2) At the open sea station which is located outside of the thermal front existing near the Youngil Bay, the ambient noise level of the upper layer(20m) was higher than that of the lower layer (100m) by $8{\sim}12dB$ below 50Hz and $15{\sim}23dB$ above 50Hz. 3) Above 60Hz the ambient noise level at the nearshore station was higher than that of the open sea station, while below 60Hz, the result was reverse. It appears that a boundary layer existed between the two stations.

  • 본 연구에서는 규사채취작업으로 인하여 발생하는 수중소음과 모래 등의 유실이 작업현장 부근에 있는 정치망어장에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 조사한 결과를 보고하고자 한다. 1. 조사대상 어장의 환경 - 조사대상 정치망어망은 양낙망 형태인 대형 정치망이었고, 경북 울지군 북면 나고리지선(37$^{\circ}$, 08.320' N, 129$^{\circ}$ 22.902' E)에 위치하고 있었으며, 어장면적은 500,000$m^2$, 어획대상어종으로는 대형 회유성 어종인 방어, 고등어, 오징어 외에도 주변해역에서 서식하는 돔, 넙치, 쥐치 및 기타잡어로 하고 있었다. Physical property analysis of sediments for development of maritime archaeological survey techniques (수중문화재 탐사기법 개발을 위한 퇴적물 물성분석)

  • Since distribution and preservation of cultural artifacts in the submarine sediments are directly affected by not only ocean currents and tides, but also their composition, it is very important to investigate geological characteristics of sediments and ocean-sediment interactions for maritime archaeological survey. Physical properties of submarine sediments, which are collected by grab sampler and vibro-corer, are analyzed in order to investigate effects of submarine environment on development of maritime archaeological survey techniques. Result of physical property analysis showed that bulk density, shear strength, and magnetic susceptibility increase with depth, while water contents and porosity decrease with depth. Since the magnetic susceptibility of bedrock is about 40 times that of submarine sediments, it might impact greatly on the response of magnetic survey. Physical properties of sediments with depth and sediment classification by Folk's ternary diagram indicate that submarine sediment mainly consists of silt, and cultural artifacts can not penetrate no deeper than 1.5 m in sediments.

  • Studies applying multiple carrier method such as OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) or FMT(Filtered Multi-Tone) to Underwater acoustic communication(UAC) system are actively under way as UAC is utilized in the various fields and the demand of high speed data transmission increases. In the existing OFDM method, the use of virtual carrier, which is inserted not to affect the adjacent channel in the frequency domain, and the cyclic prefix, which is used to reduce the impact of Inter Symbol Interference and Inter Channel Interference, decrease the throughput. In particular, the length of cyclic prefix to be used becomes longer under water since underwater has a rapidly changing channel characteristic, and the data throughput diminishes because it has to allocate more subcarrier on virtual carrier. This study therefore suggests FMT-OFDM system, a combination of OFDM and FMT, for the purpose of enhanced throughput in the underwater channel environment. Besides, in this study, channel is modeled based on data measured in real sea and the performance is analyzed after setting system parameters.

  • This paper analyses the performance of FFTSA (Fast Fourier Transform Synthetic Aperture) in the effects of temporal coherence and oscillatory towed course, which is one of the techniques for passive synthetic aperture SONAR process using linearly distributed towed array. Also this paper proposes the FFTSA technique using towed array having conformal shape to alleviate the performance degradation for estimating the incident angle under inconsistent under water environments. And this paper analyses the performance of the proposed FFTSA technique making use of conformal structure throughout exhaustive computer simulations.

  • 수중에서 사용되는 음향변환기의 성능은 사용환경 뿐만 아니라 많은 설계변수들의 조합에 의해 결정되며, 이들 설계변수들의 영향은 서로 선형 독립적이지 않은 경우가 대부분이다. 따라서 음향변환기의 최적성능을 구현하기 위해서는 각 설계변수들의 개별영향 뿐만 아니라 강호작용에 의한 영향을 동시에 고려하여야 한다. 본 연구에서는 tonpilz 변환기에 대하여 유한 요소 해석을 통하여 설계변수들이 중심 주파수, 대역폭, 음압 및 충격력에 미치는 영향을 파악하였고, 그 결과들의 통계적 다중 회귀분석을 통하여 중심 주파수 대역폭 음압 및 충격력을 이들 설계변수들의 함수로 도출하였다. 나아가 제한 최적화 기법을 이용하여 주어진 사용 환경에서 동작하면서 최대 음압을 구현할 수 있는 변환기의 최적 구조를 자동으로 결정할 수 있는 프로그램을 개발하였다. 본 연구에서 개발된 최적화 프로그램은 다중 설계변수들의 상호효과를 충분히 반영할 수 있으며, 유사한 기능의 여타 음향변환기 설계에 직접 응용이 가능할 것이다.

Distribution of bacterial biomass in the water column of Soyang lake (소양호 수중 생태계에서의 세균 생체물질량의 분포)

  • Microbiological parameters such as bacterial biovolume and biomass in Soyang Reservoir was statistically analyzed with the physico-chemical enviromental factors. Analysis of correlation and multiple regression showed that temperature affects most of microbiological parameters. Variations of total bacterial number, total bacterial biovolume and saprophyte number were highly correlatd with the concentrations of chlorophyll a and pheophytin a. Bacterial production by the $^{3}H$-thymidine incorporation rate was largely affected by Seston. It suggests that microbiological factors such as bacterial biovolume and bacterial biomass were controled by the concentration of seston and distribution of phytoplankton which acts as carbon and energy source for the bacterial community in the water column of Soyang Reservoir.

  • Deep-sea equipment such as underwater robots and unmanned submersible vehicles, include various machine components and sensors, and it is important that their reliabilities be tested before use in the fields. This is necessary because they are affected by complex extreme-environment conditions, such as high pressures, extreme temperatures, and tidal forces that are present in the deep sea. We require test equipment that can conduct empirical tests in conditions that mimic these complex oceanic environments. In this study, we propose specifications that should be met, and a design plan for the primary components, which should limit their use to a maximum water pressure of 2.0 MPa, water temperature of $5{\sim}60^{\circ}C$, and a maximum flow velocity of 2 m/s. in work-in type underwater combined environment test equipment and. We present test system development procedures to verify the reliability of products and systems used in deep-sea environments.
