Systems for underwater environment monitoring and natural resources can be considered as a part of digital convergence where real-time data transmission is possible with the help of underwater wireless sensor network (UWSN). One of key technologies required for the deployment of the systems is underwater acoustic micro modem. In this work, we design and implement an acoustic modem equipped with a commercial omnidirectional transducer. We also make experiments at the northern Han river for the verification of the developed modem. According to the experiments, the modem supports the working distance of 250 m and the data rate of 200 bps with a negligible bit error rate. It is expected that the acoustic modem can be used for various applications based on UWSN in a near future.

Underwater sensor networks (UWSNs) employ acoustic channels for communications. One of the main characteristics of the underwater acoustic channel is long propagation delay. Previously proposed MAC (medium access control) protocols for wireless sensor networks cannot be directly used in UWSNs due to the long propagation delay. The long propagation delay and uneven nodes deployments cause spatial fairness in UWSNs. Therefore, a new MAC protocol for UWSNs needs to be developed to provide efficient communications. In this paper, we propose an efficient MAC protocol in order to alleviate the fairness problem. In the proposed scheme, when a node receives a RTS packet, it does not immediately send back but delays a CTS packet. The node collects several RTS packets from source nodes during the delay time. It chooses one of the RTS packets based on the queue status information. And then, it sends a CTS packet to the source node which sent the chosen RTS packet. The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated via simulation. Simulation results show that our scheme is effective and alleviates the fairness problem.

As the interest in ocean environment monitoring and ocean development has been increased, the need for researches on underwater wireless sensor network (UWSN) and low power consuming acoustic modem for UWSN has been arisen. In this paper, we design and implement a micro-modem equipped with a tiny and omnidirectional transducer for underwater acoustic communications. In addition, we make experiments in a water tank and a pond in order to verify the performance of the developed modem in terms of supply voltage and communication distance, and analyze the results. According to the outdoor experiments, the modem can send data wirelessly in underwater at a distance of 40 meter with a data rate of 200 bps and a bit error rate of $10^{-5}$ when the supply voltage is 12 V. Due to its small size, low power consumption and omnidirectional property, it is expected that the modem which is implemented in this paper could be utilized for various applications based on UWSN.

Compared to a terrestrial communication, the high BER(Bit Error Ratio) and low channel bandwidth are the major factor of throughput degradation due to characteristics of underwater channel. Therefore, a MAC protocol must be designed to solve this problem in UWASNs(Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks). MAC protocols for UWASNs can be classified into two major types according to the contention scheme(Contention-free scheme and Contention-based scheme). In large scale of sensor networks, a Contention-based scheme is commonly used due to time-synchronize problem of Contention-free scheme. In the contention-based scheme, Each node contends with neighbor nodes to access network channel by using Back-off algorithm. But a Slot-Time of Back-off algorithm has long delay times which are cause of decrease network throughput. In this paper, we propose a new scheme to solve this problem. The proposed scheme uses variable Slot-Time instead of fixed Slot-Time. Each node measures propagation delay from neighbors which are used by Slot-time. Therefore, Slot-Times of each node are optimized by considering node deployment. Consequently, the wasted-time for Back-off is reduced and network throughput is improved. A new mac protocol performance in throughput and delay is assessed through NS3 and compared with existing MAC protocol(MACA-U). Finally, it was proved that the MAC protocol using the proposed scheme has better performance than existing MAC protocol as a result of comparison.
Data transmission in poor environment like underwater has considerably serious delay rate and ewer rate. Like this environment usually has heavy fluctuation of error rate and limited wireless communication state. Therefore, mechanism using in such environment has to be efficient and simple. This paper suggests a new block ack mechanism, called the Pervasive Block ACK (PBA), which transmits aggregated ACKs. This mechanism takes effect on reducing number of traffic, decreasing overhead and delay rate in poor environment networks like underwater. Additionally, we can expect energy consumption. We verify propriety and efficiency of PBA through describing numerical result based analytical formula in this paper.
This work tackles the problem of conventional reinforcement learning scheme which has a relatively long training time to reduce energy consumption in underwater network. The enhanced scheme adjusts the learning range of reinforcement learning based on distance estimation. It can be reduce the scope of learning. To take account the fact that the distance estimation may not be accurate due to the underwater wireless network characteristics. this research added noise in consideration of the underwater environment. In simulation result, the proposed AQ-NAV scheme has completed learning much faster than existing method. AQ-NAV can finish the training process within less than 40 episodes. But the existing method requires more than 120 episodes. The result show that learning is possible with fewer attempts than the previous one. If AQ-NAV will be applied in Underwater Networks, It will affect energy efficiency. and It will be expected to relieved existing problem and increase network efficiency.

The interest in underwater acoustic sensor networks (UWASNs), along with the rapid development of underwater industries, has increased. To operate UWASNs efficiently, it is important to adopt well-designed medium access control (MAC) protocols that prevent collisions and allow the sharing of resources between nodes efficiently. On the other hand, underwater channels suffer from a narrow bandwidth, long propagation delay, and low data rate, so existing terrestrial node pairing schemes for non orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) cannot be applied directly to underwater environments. Therefore, a multi-dimensional node pairing scheme is proposed to consider the unique underwater channel in UWASNs. Conventional NOMA schemes have considered the channel quality only in node pairing. Unlike previous schemes, the proposed scheme considers the channel gain and many other features, such as node fairness, traffic load, and the age of data packets to find the best node-pair. In addition, the sender employs a list of candidates for node-pairs rather than path loss to reduce the computational complexity. The simulation results showed that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional scheme by considering the fairness factor with 23.8% increases in throughput, 28% decreases in latency, and 5.7% improvements in fairness at best.
This paper proposes a link adaptation method for Underwater Internet of Things (IoT), which reduces power consumption of sensor nodes and improves the throughput of network in underwater IoT network. Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) technique is one of link adaptation methods. AMC uses the strong correlation between Signal Noise Rate (SNR) and Bit Error Rate (BER), but it is difficult to apply in underwater IoT as it is. Therefore, we propose the machine learning based AMC technique for underwater environments. The proposed Modulation Coding and Scheme (MCS) prediction model predicts transmission method to achieve target BER value in underwater channel environment. It is realistically difficult to apply the predicted transmission method in real underwater communication in reality. Thus, this paper uses the high accuracy BER prediction model to measure the performance of MCS prediction model. Consequently, the proposed AMC technique confirmed the applicability of machine learning by increase the probability of communication success.
The analysis of ocean environment offers us essential information for ocean exploration. But ocean environment has a lot of environmental variables such as the movements of nodes by an ocean current, corrosion by salt water, attenuation of radio wave, occurrences of multi-path and difficulty of sensor nodes' deployment. It is accordingly difficult and complex to gather and process the environmental information through ocean data communication due to these constraints of ocean environment unlike the terrestrial wireless networks. To overcome these problems, we organized ocean communication network for monitoring underwater environment by real experiment in Gyeongpoho similar to ocean environment. Therefore, this paper aims at overcoming major obstacles in ocean environment, effectively deploying sensor nodes for ocean environment monitoring and defining an efficient structure suitable for communication environment by the implementation of ocean environment monitoring system in Gyeongpoho.

Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks(UASN) enables varied study from collected data of underwater environments such as pollution monitoring, disaster prevention. The collected data is transmitted from underwater to terrestrial communication entity by acoustic communication. Because of the constraints of underwater environments include low data rate and propagation delay, it is difficult to apply cryptographic techniques of terrestrial wireless communication to UASN. For this reason, if the cryptographic techniques are excluded, then collected data will be exposed to security threats, such as extortion and forgery, during transmission of data. So, the cryptographic techniques, such as the authentication and key establishment protocol which can confirm reliability of communication entities and help them share secret key for encryption of data, must need for protecting transmitted data against security threats. Thus, in this paper, we propose the light weight authentication and key establishment protocol.
