  • In this paper, to recognize the collision behavior between a submerged floating tunnel(SFT) and underwater navigation vessel(UNV), both structures are modeled and analyzed. The SFT of collision point is modeled tubular section using concrete with steel lining. The other part of SFT is modeled elastic beam elements. Mooring lines are modeled as cable elements with tension. The under water navigation vessel is assumed 1800DT submarine and its total mass at collision is obtained with hydrodynamic added mass. The buoyancy force on SFT is included in initial condition using dynamic relaxation method. The buoyancy ratio (B/W) and the collision speed are considered as the collision conditions. As results, energy dissipation is concentrated on the SFT and that of the UNV is minor. Additionally, the collision behaviors are greatly affected by B/W and the tension of mooring lines. Especially, the collision forces are shown different tendency compare to vessel collision force of current design code.

  • This paper presents an integrated navagation control concept for underwater vehicles under high speed navigation circumstance. First of all, in order to control an underwater vehicle with respect to automatic navigation, an integrated navigation control method is suggested in view of synchronous control for course keeping, diving and depth control. An exact nonlinear model equation with six-degree-of-freedom is derived for control algorithm. To identify various hydrodynamic coefficients of the equation, an experimental approach is introduced and results are demonstrated for MANTA type model.

  • This study deals with a method to localize a noise source occuring in a marine vehicle in a 3D environment. Even when access to the noise source is limited for a marine vehicle, such as a ship or a submarine in operation, the signal received on a hydrophone located elsewhere contains Doppler effected noise by moving relatively. This study suggests noise localization algorithm in 3D based on Doppler effect by moving marine vehicle. Using a known source mounted on the vehicle, the noise source was estimated by reducing the range of Doppler center and closest point of approach via the least square method. The algorithm was verified through various simulations and it was shown that the noise could be localized in 3D based on Doppler effect by employing two fixed hydrophones located at the vehicle's exterior points and a known reference signal generator located somewhere on the vehicle.

  • This paper describes a simulation method to generate sensor measurements for location estimation of an underwater robot. Field trial of a navigation method of an underwater robot takes much time and expenses and it is difficult to change the environment of the field trial as desired to test the method in various situations. Therefore, test and verification of a navigation method through simulation is inevitable for underwater environment. This paper proposes a method to generate sensor measurements of range, depth, velocity, and attitude taking the uncertainties of measurements into account through simulation. The uncertainties are Gaussian noise, outlier, and correlation between the measurement noise. Also, the method implements uncertainty in sampling time of measurements. The method is tested and verified by comparing the uncertainty parameters calculated statistically from the generated measurements with the designed uncertainty parameters. The practical feasibility of the measurement data is shown by applying the measurement data for location estimation of an underwater robot.

  • A moving surface vessel generates a ship wake which contains a cloud of micro-bubbles with radii ranging between $8{\sim}200{\mu}m$. Such micro-bubbles can be detected by active sonar system for more than ten minutes depending on the size and speed of the surface vessel. In this paper, a reverberation model for the ship wake is presented. The developed model consists of the acoustic scattering model due to the distribution of the micro-bubbles and the kinematic model for the moving active sonar. The acoustic scattering model is based on the volume integration, where the volume scattering strengths are obtained from the spatial distribution of micro-bubbles. Since the directivity and look-direction of active sonar are important factors for moving active sonar, the kinematic model utilizes the Euler transformation to obtain the relative motion between the global and local coordinates. In order to verify the developed model, a series of sea experiment was executed in September 2007 to obtain the spatial-temporal distribution of a bubble cloud, and analyzed to be compared with the simulation results.
