  • Functionally graded materials(FGMs) involve dual-phase graded layers in which two different constituents are mixed continuously and functionally according to a given volume fraction. For the analysis of their thermo-mechanical response, conventional homogenized methods have been widely employed in order to estimate equivalent material properties of the graded layer. However, such overall estimations are insufficient to accurately predict the local behavior. In this paper, we compare the thermo-elastic behaviors predicted by several overall material-property estimation techniques with those obtained by discrete analysis models utilizing the finite element method, for various volume fractions and loading conditions.

  • A study on mechanical property characterization and modeling technique was carried out to approximate the behaviour of structures with 2.5D C/SiC material. Several tensile tests were performed to analyze the behaviour characteristics of the 2.5D C/SiC material and elastic property was characterized by applying a mathematical homogenization and a modified rule of mixture. SiC matrix representing the elasto-plastic behavior approximates as a bilinear function. Then the equivalent yield strength and equivalent plastic stiffness were calculated by minimizing errors in experiment and approximation. RVE(Representative Volume Element)was defined from the fiber and matrix configuration of 2.5D C/SiC and a process of calculating the effective stiffness matrix by applying the modified rule of mixture to RVE was implemented in the ABAQUS User-defined subroutine. Finite element analysis was performed by applying the mechanical properties of fiber and matrix calculated based on the proposed process, and the results were in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • Functionally graded materials(FGMs) are highlighted to be suitable for high temperature engineering due to their continuous distribution of material properties. In this paper, an optimal design is executed for determining the optimal material volume distribution pattern that minimizes the steady-state thermal stress of FGM heat-resisting composites. The interior penalty function method and the golden section method are employed as optimization techniques while the finite element method is used for thermal stress analysis. Through numerical simulations we suggest the volume fraction distributions that considerably improve initial thermal stress distributions.

  • Graded layers in which two different constituent particles are mixed are inserted into functionally graded material such that the volume fractions of constituent particles vary continuously and functionally over the entire material domain. The material properties of this dual-phase graded region, which is essential for the numerical analysis of the thermo-mechanical behavior of FGM, have been predicted by traditional homogenization methods. But, these methods are limited to predict the global equivalent material properties of FGMs because the detailed geometry information such as the particel shape and the dispersion structure is not considered. In this context, this study intends to investigate the characteristics of these homogenization methods through the finite element analysis utilizing the discrete micromechanics models of the graded layer, for various volume fractions and external loading conditions.

  • Because the previous design procedure for the composite wind turbine blade structure using trial and error method takes long time, a improved design procedure by using the program based on classical laminate theory was proposed to reduce the inefficient element. According to the improved design procedure, limitation of strains, stresses and displacements specified by international standard specification IEC1400-1 for the composite wind turbine blade were applied to sizing the structural configuration by using the rule of mixture and the principal stress design technique with a simplified turbine blade. Structural safety for strength and buckling stability was confirmed by the developed analysis program based on the laminate theory to minimize the design procedure. After modifying the preliminary design result with additional structural components such as skin, foam sandwich and mounting joints, stresses, strains, displacements, natural frequency, buckling load and fatigue life were analyzed by the finite element method. Finally these results were confirmed by comparing with IEC1400-1 specification.

  • This research assumes that abduction is so important as much as all the creative plausible reasoning to be based upon. We expect it to be deeply appreciated and be taught positively in school mathematics. We are noticing that every problem solving process must contain some steps of abduction and thus, we believe that those who are afraid of abduction cannot solve any newly faced problem. Upon these thoughts, we are looking into the middle school mathematics textbooks to see that how strongly various abductions are emphasized to solve problems in it. We modified types of abduction those were suggested by Eco(1983) or by Bettina Pedemonte, David Reid (2011) and investigated those books to see if, we may regard, various types of abduction be intended to be used to solve their problems. As a result of it, we found that more than 92% of the problems were not supposed to use creative abduction necessarily to solve it. And we interpret this as most authors of the textbooks have emphasis more on the capturing and understanding of basic knowledge of school mathematics rather than the creative reasoning through them. And we believe this need innovation, otherwise strong debates are necessary among the professionals of it.
