Since ramie suckers distribute soil surface layer within 10cm depth, some of them are dead from low soil temperature in winter. An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of various mulching methods on safe overwintering of sucker at three or four years old, fully-grown ramie plots. The sprouting dates of ramie was March 28 in transparent vinyl mulching(TPEF), April 1 in transparent vinyl mulching over cover of straw, manure or rice hull at the amount of 500kg /10a (CM), and April 6 in black vinyl mulching(BDEF). These treatments showed earlier sprouting date from 9 to 18 days than the conventional mulching with 1000 kg straw /10a the sprouting date of which was April 15. TPEF treatment showed the earliest but ununiform sprouting. In contrast, sprouts in CM treatment was uniform but emerged somewhat later compared with the treatment of TPEF. The number of stems per unit area increased 50 percent more in TPEF, and 35 to 39 percent more in CM than the treatment of conventional mulching.
The physiological reaction of two soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) cultivars tolerant and susceptible to rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi Syd.) was studied at the AVRDC in Taiwan, ROC. The rust epidemic on the susceptible cultivar began earlier and progressed more rapidly than on the tolerant cultivar. The defoliation by rust infection increased rapidly after the latter half of pod filling. The reduction of LA! by rust in the susceptible cultivar occurred earlier than in the tolerant cultivar. The differences in the chlorophyll content between the rust-free and rust-infected plants was 2.04% in the tolerant, and 16.43% in the susceptible cultivar. The shoot dry weight increased at each growth stage in the fungicide protected plots, but decreased in the non-fungicide protected plots after the R6 growth stage onward and the tendency to decrease was more severe in the susceptible than in the tolerant cultivar. The pod and seed dry weight of the suscep-tible cultivar in the fungicide-protected plot increased dramatically from the R6 growth stage, but in the non-fungicide plot, there was almost no increase in pod and seed dry weight from R6 growth stage, due to rust. The number of empty pods and imperfect grains were increased by rust infection, but the protein content was not afftected. There were reductions of oil content, seed length, seed width, seed thickness, pod thickness, number of pods and seeds, 100 seed weight, and yield due to rust infection. The yield losses by rust infection were 22.3%in the tolerant and 68.7% in the susceptible cultivar.
Late harvest in peanut has often resulted in reduced yield and dissipation of labor by virtue of increasing over-matured pods causing the pod shattering. Present study was conducted to obtain a basic information for deciding optimum harvest time of the peanut in Chungbuk province by examination of yield components at different harvest time of leading cultivars Saedl and Youngho cultivated with vinyl mulching or non-mulching conditions. Peg number and pod number were significantly increased by vinyl mulching and also significantly different by the harvest time. Pod number increased with the lapse of days after flowering was gradually decreased from 100 days after flowering in saedl and 110 days in Youngho. Number of seed-bearing pods and matured seed percent were significantly increased by vinyl mulching and had tendency to increase with the lapse of days after flowering. There was no significant difference in number of over-matured pods and pod shattering percent between vinyl mulching and non-mulching. They increased drastically in 110 days after flowering in Saedl, but in 120 days after flowering in Youngho, Increase in 100 seed weight by vinyl mulching was statistically nonsignificant in both varieties, however, total seed yield was significantly increased by vinyl mulching, showing maximum yield in 100 days after flowering in the variety Saedl and 110 days in Youngho, respectively, Seed yield was negatively correlated to peg number and positively correlated to pod number, seed-bearing pod number, pod shattering percent, matured seed percent and 100 seed weight, respectively.
This research was conducted to assess the influence of humic or fulvic acid on Bentazone phytotoxicity using a bioassay with hydroponically grown cabbage (Brassica campestris subsp. napus var. pekinensis Makino). Concentrations of Bentazone in the water culture media were ranged from 0 to 32 ${\mu}M $ and those of the organic ligands were 1.0mM as a soluble carbon. Media were prepared in a complete factorial combination with pHs of 4.5, 6.5 and 8.5. The phytotoxicity indices on growth rate and dry weight decrement were employed to evaluate the effects of organic ligands on the Bentazone phytotoxicity. Humic or fulvic acid without Bentazone treatment enhanced the growth of cabbage and this effect was evident at low pH of 4.5. Bentazone led to chlorosis and necrosis on cabbage leaves resulting in the decreases of dry and fresh weights and growth rate. This phytotoxic effect was increased with Bentazone concentration and evident at low pH. At pH 4.5, dry weight was decreased about 63% with 8${\mu}$M of Bentazone treatment. Effective concentration of Bentazone causing 50% decreases in fresh weight as compared to the control was estimated to be 21${\mu}$M. Presence of organic ligand reduced the phytotoxicity of Bentazone to cabbage significantly by increasing yields and growth rates as compared to the treatment of Bentazone alone. At pH 4.5, fulvic acid reduced phytotoxicity of Bentazone upto 46%, and this efficiency of fulvic acid was better than that of humic acid under the same condition.
This experiment was conducted to develop a practical method to growth in hydroponics conditions. For this purpose, leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L., cv. 'Cheongchima') was cultivated under different temperature and light conditions in experimental fields of Sahmyook university from March, 1991 to May, 1996. The visual quality score(VQS), a quantitative parameter to evaluate harvested leaf lettuce quality. The leaf lettuce cultivated at $25^{\circ}C$ solution temperature showed the highest fresh weight pe, plant (59.7g/plant), but lowest visual quality score (5.2), while leaf lettuce cultivated at 15$^{\circ}C$ solution temperature showed lower fresh weight per plant (25.2g/plant) but highest visual quality score (7.2). In general, growth of leaf lettuce was retarded by low solution temperature, but quality was higher than those of other solution temperature. Different day/night temperature of nutrient solutions 20/2$0^{\circ}C$ and 25/2$0^{\circ}C$ was highest in yield, but leaf type was grow longer, and visual quality are inferior to low temperature. Yield was decreased as 10 and 25% at 60 and 80% shading treatment, respectively. Chlorophyll content was decreased by shading. but plant height and root length were increased of leaf lettuce growth with hydroponics.

Human has noticed a beautiful natural scenery and appreciated it as a scenic site by giving meaning to it and evaluating it. How the beautiful natural scenery was appreciated as a scenic site depends on natural features, social and cultural environments, and the current of the times. Mt. Jiri is the highest mountain in inland South Korea and keeps ancestors' history and culture intact. Joseon Dynasty literary men frequently mentioned Mt. Jiri as a tourist attraction where they could pursue and share their studies against its beautiful natural scenery. The countless literary men visited Mt. Jiri and some of them left their journeys as travelling records. This research aimed at apprehending travel routes of Chunwang Peak of Mt. Jiri based on the contents of travelling records and investigating the scenic site value of scenic resources as the literary men in Joseon Dynasty recognized. The scenic resources of Mt. Jiri were related to the change of the reason or motivation of person who climbed and it should be noted that there was a change of reason or motivation in climbing Mt. Jiri from a following of master's paths to discovery of a new trails. Thus, even if there was a difference in reason or purpose of natural scenic beauty, the concept of scenic sites of the past and the present day should be included into the extended meaning of scenic sites. Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) infection causes acute enteritis with lethal watery diarrhea resulting in a high mortality rate in piglets. As with the other members of group 1 coronaviruses, PEDV also utilizes the host aminopeptidase N (APN) as the major cellular receptor for entry into target cells. The coronavirus spike (S) protein is known to interact with the cellular surface for viral attachment and the S1 domain of all characterized coronaviruses contains a receptor-binding domain (RBD) that mediates a specific high-affinity interaction with their respective cellular receptors. Although the RBDs of several coronaviruses have been mapped, the location of the PEDV RBD has to date not been defined. As a first step toward the identification of the region of the S protein of the PEDV that is critical for recognition with the cellular receptor, we generated a series of S1-truncated variants and examined their abilities to bind to the porcine APN (pAPN) receptor. Our data indicate that the N-terminus of the S1 domain is required for pAPN association. The results from the present study may assist in our understanding of the molecular interactions between the PEDV S protein and the pAPN receptor.
