  • The periodic safety review of operational nuclear power plants requires that the plants should keep a well organized environmental monitoring program. The past records of environment monitoring data were analyzed. and the tritium concentrations of the samples in the surface and ground water around Kori site were measured. It was shown that the tritium concentrations around the Kori site were slightly higher than that of natural background. The change of background tritium concentration was estimated through a numerical modeling. Two different versions of 7 compartments model - the world and the northern hemisphere - defined in NCRP-62 were modeled for the global tritium cycling. The numerical solution of the model was obtained using a computer program, AMBER. The four cases of tritium source-terms into the atmosphere were considered. The results showed that the tritium concentration in the surface soil water was higher than that in sea water or surface stream water. Also, it was shown that the tritium produced by the interaction between cosmic rays and the gases were the major source of tritium, and the tritium produced by nuclear weapon test decreased considerably.

  • This paper is a study of the behavior characteristics that occur in the hydrogen storage vessel TYPE 1 according to pressure and temperature conditions by FEM(Finite element method). Von Mises stress (VMS) generated at the highest pressure was compared with Yield strength (YS) of the material for structural safety assessment of the container, and the results of plastic strain energy density (PSED) were analyzed as basic data for life expectancy. According to the analysis results, the safety of the hydrogen gas storage vessel is not ensured due to the occurrence of VMS higher than the yield strength on the bottom of the storage container at a gas pressure of 40 Mpa or higher. In addition, the results of VMS caused by temperature conditions are very low and the behavior by temperature can be ignored. The maximum pressure of VMS/YS below 1 is calculated to be about 30 Mpa, indicating that the hydrogen storage container subject to this paper should be managed with a gas charging pressure of less than 30 Mpa.

  • This study addresses the escalating issue of worldwide hydrogen gas accidents, which has seen a significant increase in occurrences. To comprehensively evaluate the risks associated with hydrogen, a two approach was employed in this study. Firstly, a qualitative risk assessment was conducted using the bow-tie method. Secondly, a quantitative consequence analysis was carried out utilizing the areal locations of hazardous atmospheres (ALOHA) model. The study applied this method to two incidents, the hydrogen explosion accident occurred at the Muskingum River power plant in Ohio, USA, 2007 and the hydrogen storage tank explosion accident occurred at the K Technopark water electrolysis system in Korea, 2019. The results of the risk assessments revealed critical issues such as deterioration of gas pipe, human errors in incident response and the omission of important gas cleaning facility. By analyzing the cause of accidents and assessing risks quantitatively, the effective accident response plans are proposed and the effectiveness is evaluated by comparing the effective distance obtained by ALOHA simulation. Notably, the implementation of these measures led to a significant 54.5% reduction in the risk degree of potential explosions compared to the existing risk levels.

  • In this study, Aimed to develop technology to ensure the safety of firefighters responding to hydrogen incidents and to review the performance of protective super absorbent polymer (SAP) that could help maintain the thermal protection performance of equipment with protective properties. Tests were conducted, including bench-scale and full-scale thermal exposure tests, to review the protective performance of SAP using firefighting garments commonly used by firefighters. The results showed that without SAP application, 2nd degree burn areas were measured at 9.4%, and 3rd degree burn areas at 7.7%. In contrast, when SAP was applied, the percentage of 2nd degree burn areas decreased to 7% on the lower body, and there was no temperature rise causing 3rd degree burns. Therefore, it is expected that by applying SAP to the outer surface of firefighter garments, even under temporarily high temperature conditions such as hydrogen jet flames, thermal damage to firefighters could be protected for a certain period.

  • In commercial transactions of energy sources using hydrogen charging stations, high-accuracy flow meters are needed to prevent accidents such as overcharging due to inaccurate measurements and to ensure transparency in hydrogen commercial transactions through accurate measurements. This research developed a Corioli-type flowmeter prototype and conducted a risk assessment to prevent accidents during a process change comparison experiment for existing charging stations to verify the measurement performance. A process change section was defined for the installation of measurement facilities for empirical experiments and HAZOP was conducted. In addition, JSA was also conducted to secure the safety of experimenters, such as preventing valve mis-opening during empirical experiments. Measures were established to improve the risk factors derived through HAZOP, and work procedures were established to minimize human errors and ensure the safety of workers through JSA. The design change and system manufacturing for the installation of the metering system were completed by reflecting the risk assessment results, and safety could be confirmed through the performance comparison test of the developed meter prototype. The developed prototype flow meter showed a total of 30 flow measurements under the operating conditions of 70 MPa, and the average error was -1.58% to 3.96%. Such a metering error was analyzed to have the same performance as a flow meter installed and operated for commercial use.

  • This study aims to establish safety zones for bunkering operations of hydrogen propulsion ships in coastal areas through risk assessment and evaluate their validity. Using a 350 kW-class ferry operating in Busan Port as the subject of analysis, with quantitative risk assessment based on accident consequence and frequency analysis, along with a social risk assessment considering population density. The results of the risk assessment indicate that all scenarios were within acceptable risk criteria and ALARP region. The most critical accident scenarios involve complete hose rupture during bunkering, resulting in jet flames (Frequency: 2.76E-06, Fatalities: 9.81) and vapor cloud explosions (Frequency: 1.33E-08, Fatalities: 14.24). For the recommended safety zone criteria in the 6% hose cross-sectional area leakage scenario, It could be appropriate criteria considering overall risk level and safety zones criteria for hydrogen vehicle refueling stations. This research contributes to establishing safety zone for bunkering operations of hydrogen propulsion ships through risk assessment and provides valuable technical guidelines.

  • One of the important topics to prepare the up-coming era of so-called ‘hydrogen economy’ is hydrogen transmission. Pipeline is conceivably the most economic way to consistently and safely transport a large amount of hydrogen over a long distance, which may be strongly requested in hydrogen economy era. As a good starting point for the purpose, one might wonder whether conventional API pipeline steels as designed for natural gas transmission can be used as the hydrogen pipeline materials or not. To answer the question, here we performed a series of micro-/nano-indentations together with tensile tests on the hydrogen-charged API X65, X70 and X100 steels having different strength level. In this paper, from the results of tensile tests, the hydrogen effects on the mechanical behavior in the API steels are systematically evaluated.
