Determination of Selenium in Foods by HG-AAS (HG-AAS에 의한 식품 중의 셀렌의 정량에 대한 연구)

  • A method has been investigated for the determination of Selenium in Ginseng radix, Ganoderma Lucidum and Garlic using hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (HG-AAS). The effects of several acids and sodium tetrahydroborate concentration and their flow rate on the determination of Selenium for the hydride generation were investigated. The method of sample decomposition was also investigated using various mineral acids, such as nitric, perchloric and sulfuric acid in the closed system and foreign ion effects were studied. In the optimum conditions, we obtained calibration curve in the range 0-40 ppb. The analytical data of Garlic, Ganoderma Lucidum and Ginseng radix are 289, 296, 198 ppb, respectively.

A Study on pH, Viscosity, Microorganisms and Immunoglobulin A of the Saliva (타액의 수소이온 농도, 점도, 세균 및 면역글로블린 A에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the age-and sex-related changes in the pH of resting saliva, viscosity, microorganisms and immunoglobulin A of stimulated whole saliva, and to investigate their correlations. The 120 healthy subjects were included in this study and the author used cone-and plate digital viscometer for viscosity, MSB agar for Streptococcus mutans, SL Rogosa agar for lactobacilli, and single radial immunodiffusion technique for immunoglobulinA. The obtained results were as follows : 1. There was no significant difference in pH, viscosity, Streptococcus mutans lactobacilli and immunoglobulin A of the saliva between males and females. 2. The viscosity values of stimulated whole saliva showed the increasing pattern with aging. 3. DMFS (or dmfs) rate was not correlated with pH, viscosity, Streptococcus mutans, lactobacilli and immunoglobulin A of the saliva. 4. There was a significant difference in the concentration of immunoglobulin A between the group under 10 and groups above 10. 5. The viscosity values of stimulated whole saliva showed the increasing pattern with decreasing of the number of Streptococcus mutans.

  • pH-ISFETs, the semiconductor pH sensors, were combined with immobilized enzyme membranes to prepare FET type urea and glucose sensors and its operational characteristics were investigated. Photolithography techniques were applied to immobilize enzymes on the $H^{+}$ sensing membrane of the pH-ISFET with photo-sensitive polymers, PVA-SbQ. Fabricated urea and glucose sensors could determine $0.5{\sim}50{\;}mg/dl$ urea concentrations and $10{\sim}1000{\;}mg/dl$ glucose concentrations, respectively.

  • An ISFET urea sensor was fabricated by immobilizing the urease using polyurethane on the $H^{+}$ sensing $Si_{3}N_{4}$ thin film of pH-ISFET. The sensor could determine the urea concentration $1{\sim}50$ mg/dl with fast response of $3{\sim}5$ min. and good repeatability. For its application to clinical analysis, the results of the urea measurements in blood plasma using ISFET urea sensor were compared with these of conventional Urease-Indophenol method.

  • The effect of pH on the citrate leaching behavior of heavy metal ion was investigated to develop an eco-friendly process for removing heavy metals from soil contaminated with copper, zinc, and lead. The leaching tests were performed using citrate solution with pH adjusted by mixing citric acid and sodium citrate under the following leaching conditions: particle size, under $75{\mu}m$; temperature, $50^{\circ}C$; citrate concentration, $1kmol/m^3$; pulp density, 5%; shaking speed, 100 rpm; leaching time, 1 hour. The difference of pH before and after the leaching test was not observed, and this result indicates the direct effect of hydrogen ion concentration on the leaching of metals was insignificant. The removal ratios of copper, zinc, and lead from the contaminated soil decreased with increasing pH. The thermodynamic calculation suggests that the leaching behaviors of metal ions were determined by two reactions; one is the reaction to form complex ions between heavy metal ions and citrate ion species, and the other is the reaction to form metal hydroxide between heavy metal ions and hydroxide ion.

  • Nuclear medicine imaging devices such as PET diagnose disease after injecting radiopharmaceuticals in human body for diagnosis. Radiopharmaceuticals should maintain the proper pH for human body safety. In general, pH paper is used to measure the pH of the radiopharmaceutical. pH of the sample compared with the standard color chart is used for measurement. However, the pH reading difference according to the experience of a rater can be generated. Also, a pH meter for measuring pH has a high sensitivity and contamination of the sensor must be avoided. In this paper, we developed the new hardware device for pH reading method and software was developed with vision algorithm to measure pH easily and simply.

  • 1. The basic investigations on soil textures, water holding capacity, pH, exchangeable calcium, and organic matter contents in four species bed were conducted in order to improve the natural flat for the bivalve beds. 2. It was statistically significant that there were differences in the soil textures among all beds of four species, D. japonica, C. sinensis, M. veneriformis, and T. philippin-arum. 3. There was no significant difference in water holding capacity, pH, and exchange-able calcium contents among different bivalve beds statistically, 4. It was highly significant that there were diffences in soil organic matter content among all groups of beds except that of D. japonica - C. sinensis. 5. It is considered that that soil textures and soil organic matter contents are most important factors to restrict the distribution of each species bivalve within a certain limited area of tidelands.

  • This paper has proposed a new-type groundwater auto-monitoring system based on Multi-Sensor Device. The system adopted Multi-Sensor Device as host computer of data acquisition, used Windows Mobile which was prevalent operation system of Multi-Sensor Device. It adopted serial port CAN and RS485 as the communication interface between goundwater sensor Device and monitor host machine and utilized serial-linked multi-sensor design to measure effectively according to the depth of groundwater. We present a design for a groundwater monitoring system based on a network of wirelessly linked sensors. The proposed solution will enable groundwater researchers and decision makers to have quick access to the groundwater data with less effort and cost. Though our design is initially meant for groundwater monitoring, it can be easily adapted to other fields of environmental monitoring.

  • Effects of acids and pre-reductants in the analysis of arsenic have been studied by hydride generation-atomic absorption spectrometry. The analytical results were strongly dependent on the acid concentrations. All the pre-reductants was very effective to observe the arsenic signal at strong acid concentrations (3 M-5 M). However, at the low acid condition (${\leq}0.1M$), L-cysteine only showed a reasonable effect on the absorption signal. When the sample was treated with the nitric acid, absorption signal was unstable and was also decreased. Although interference effects were observed from metal ions such as $Cr^{6+}$ and $Br^{5+}$ at low acid condition, the generation of hydride could be increased by the strong acid condition.

  • The rates of oxygen ring formation of $[Mo_2O_3(Ox)_2(OxH)_2(NCS)_2]$ have been investigated spectrophotometric method in binary aqueous mixtures. Temperature was $20^{\circ}C$ to $40^{\circ}C$ and pressure was varied up to 1500 bar. The observed rate constants are increased by hydrogen ion and decreased by thiocyanate. The more increasing of co-solvents dielectric constant, the more stable intermediate is formed. The observed rate constant is given by, $k_{obs}^{-1} = k^{-1} (1 + K^{-1}[H_2O]^{-1}) All activation parameters are positive values. The oxygen ring formation of [Mo_2O_3(Ox)_2(OxH)_2(NCS)_2]$ is believed to be a interchange-dissociative mechanism..
