Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 4-hexylresorcinol and hydroxyapatite combination graft on bone regeneration in the rabbit calvarial defect model. Methods: Ten New Zealand white rabbits were used for this study. Bilateral round shaped defects (diameter: 8.0 mm) were created on the parietal bone. 4-hexylresorcinol and hydroxyapatite combination graft material was grafted into the right parietal bone defect area (experimental). The left bone defect area was not filled with anything (control). The animals were sacrificed at 4 weeks and 8 weeks after grafting. A micro-computerized tomography of each specimen was taken, and the specimens were stained for histological analysis. Results: The average value of bone mineral density (BMD) and Bone volume (BV) was higher in the experimental group than in the control group at 4 weeks and 8 weeks after surgery. However, the difference was not statistically significant (P>0.05) at 8 weeks after grafting. The BMD and BV in the experimental group at 4 weeks after surgery was significantly higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: 4-hexylresorcinol and hydroxyapatite combination graft material showed higher initial bone formation than the control, however, there was no difference at 8weeks after operation.

Recently, synthetic biopolymers and bioceramics such as poly (${\varepsilon}$-caprolactone)(PCL), hydroxyapatite, tricalcium phosphate, biphasic calcium phosphate(BCP), and zirconia have been used as substrates to generate various tissues or organs in tissue engineering. Thus, the purpose of this study was the characterization of $ZrO_2$/BCP/PCL(ZBP) scaffold for bone tissue regeneration. Based on the result of single-line test, blended 3D ZBP scaffolds with fully interconnected pores and new complex pore pattern of $45^{\circ}+135^{\circ}$-type and staggered-type were successfully fabricated using a polymer deposition system. Furthermore, the effect of ZBP scaffold on mechanical property was analyzed. In addition, in vitro cell interaction of ZBP scaffold on MG63 cells was evaluated using a cell counting kit-8(CCK-8) assay.
The present study was aimed to evaluate the effect of demineralized freeze-dried bone (DFDB) and resorbable hydroxyapatite (RHA) on bone formation in the extracted socket. The lower left and right 2nd and 3rd premolar were extracted in adult dogs. The one group was grafted with DFDB into the extracted socket, and the other group grafted with RHA. The extracted socket was sutured without any graft materials as control. The animals were killed on the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 8th week after the graft for macroscopic and microscopic examination. Results obtained were as follows : 1. Macroscopically, nor infection of the graft site and dislodgement of the grafted material were noted in any animals used. 2. Young trabeculae of osteoid were formed in the socket wall in control group at 2 weeks after the graft. Osteoid tissue was formed in DFDB group at 1 week after graft, and a fine osteoid tissue was grown through the RHA particles in RHA group at 2 weeks graft. 3. The grafted groups showed more rapid bone formation than the control. Between the grafted groups, DFDB group showed more rapid formation than RHA group, DFDB group showed osteoinductive bone formation and RHA group showed osteoconductive bone formation. These results suggest that DFDB and RHA are useful to preserve the alveolar bone and to improve new bone formation by immediate grafting into the extraction sockets.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of toothpaste containing hydroxyapatite for patients who complained dental hypersensitivity. Before baseline of application of toothpaste with hydroxyapatite, tooth brushing instruction was done respectively and the several indices were measured at baseline, 2, 4, 8 weeks. Clinical indices were estimated, and responses to cold, compressive air, tactile stimulus were evaluated with verbal rating score. Relief effects and visual analogue scale were also evaluated. The results of this study were as follows 1. The occurrence rate of hypersensitivity in upper jaw was higher than that of lower jaws, and molar area showed more hypersensitivity than premolar and incisor area. Buccal site was hypersensitive followed by interproximal and lingual site. 2. Plaque index, gingival index and probing depth reduction were gradually improved after Tooth Brushing Instruction and using toothpaste. 3. Subjects showed most sensitive response to cold stimuli than compressive air and tactile stimuli. 4. The relief effect was increased during using tooth paste and complete relief was increased especially at 8 weeks. 5. Visual analogue scale was increased. In conclusion, it was confirmed that toothpaste containing microcrystalline hydroxyapatite have the relief effect of tooth hypersensitivity. During 8 weeks, stimulus responses were decreased and hypersensitivity relief effect was increased.
To increase mechanical properties of the hydroxyapatite/poly (L-lactide) (HA/PLLA) composite which was a potential bone substitute material, HA was modified by the surface grafting with D-lactide (DLA) and the formation of stereocomplexes between components was introduced. The composite films were prepared by the solvent-nonsolvent technique to minimize the precipitation of HA during drying. The structure and properties of the composites were investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimeter, and scanning electron microscopy, and mechanical property measurements. TGA results showed that the amount of DLA grafted on the HA surfaces (g-HA) was 6 wt%. The obtained g-HA exhibited better dispersity in an organic solvent than HA. The formation of stereocomplexes in the composites was confirmed by the change in melting temperature. The mechanical properties of g-HA/PLLA composites were increased, compared to the HA/PLLA composites.

Subinhibitory concentrations (sub-MICs) refer to concentrations below minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). The antimicrobial agents may be present at relatively high concentration, at least higher than bacterial MIC and thereafter be deserted off a surface and function at sub-MICs, perhaps by interfering with bacterial metabolism. Consequently, the aim of this study was to determine the effects of growth, in the presence of sub-MICs of antimicrobial agents, on the cell surface properties and virulence factors of mutans streptococci and to investigate the efficacy of a chemical approach in vitro. Streptococcus mutans Ingbritt and Streptococcus sobrinus 6715-7 were used. Eight antimicrobial agents (Sanguinaria extract;SG, Chlorhexidine digluconate;CHX, Fluoride;F, Propolis;PP, Hydrogen peroxide;HP, Triclosan;TC, Sodium dodecyl sulfate;SDS Cetylpyridinium chloride; CC) were diluted serially in broth to determine MICs and to compare the growth rate, acid production, hydrophobicity, adhesion activity to saliva coated hydroxyapatite, glucan synthesis and cellular aggregation of experiment groups (in the presence of sub-MICs) with those of control (in the absence of antimicrobial agents). Sub-MICs of antimicrobial agents affected the growth of cells, hydrophobicity, and adhesion of bacteria to saliva coated hydroxyapatite and glucan synthesis. They also resulted in a significant reduction in pH after 12 hours (p<0.05). By cells pretreated with proteinase K, either the aggregation induced by antimicrobial agents was completely inhibited or the aggregation titers were markedly increased. According to the results of the present study, each antimicrobial agent at sub-MICs could affect similar as its known action mechanism and could continually inhibit cariogenic bacteria at such concentrations. Thus, the use of these antimicrobial agents would be one of the effective methods to prevent dental caries.
This study was performed to compare the anticarious effect of the different fluoride adsorbed(Naf, $NH_4F, Na_2PO_3F, SnF_2, TiF_4$) on synthetic hydroxyapatite and enamel. The amount of fluoride adsorbed in synthetic hydroxyapatite under various concentrations and pH of these fluoride solutions was measured by specific electrode. Enamel samples treated with 5 kinds of 1,000ppm fluoride solutions for 10 minutes were evaluated for fluoride uptake and enamel soubility. The results were as follows. 1. The adsorption of fluoride on synthetic hydroxyapatite increased gradually by the concentration of the fluoride solution, In 1,000ppm fluoride solution, the adsorption of fluoride on synthetic hydroxyapatite treated with NH4F and NaF solutions at pH 4.0 was relatively higher than that of other fluoride solutions. In NH4F and NaF solutions, the adsorption of fluoride on powdered enamel was higher at pH 4.0 solution than at pH 7.0 solution. 2. Fluoride uptake from NH4F solution was relatively high. But that from $Na_2PO_3F$ solution was lower than those from other fluoride solutions. 3. Fluoride solutions were significantly effective on enhancing acid resistance. $NH_4F$ solution was relatively more effective than others on enhancing acid resistance. 4. $SnF_2 and TiF_4$ solutions had the same effect on fluoride adsorption, fluoride uptake, and enamel solubility.

Octacalcium phosphate(OCP, Ca8H2(PO4)6·5H2O) is one of biodegradable calcium phosphate materials with osteoconductivity and biocompatibility. It has the advantage of rapid bone formation and resorption due to the property of stimulating stromal cells to differentiate into osteoblasts. However, if OCP is inserted in body, it is immediately decomposed without maintaining of its shape as scaffolds due to their weak cohesive force between powder. On the other hand, hydroxyapatite (HA, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2), which has a crystal structure similar to that of OCP, remains in the body without decomposition until the bone defect is restored. In this study, the degradation behavior of OCP/HA disc with different amount of HA in SBF (simulated body fluid) solution was characterized in terms of the weight loss, pH variation and microstructure change with immersion duration in SBF solution. As a result, the OCP/HA disc was not quickly decomposed and maintained its own shape for 2 weeks regardless of HA content. In particular, the surface of 40HA specimen was uniformly dissolved and then CDHA (calcium deficient hydroxyapatite) phase were formed onto the surface of disc after 7 days in SBF solution. It would be suggested that the 40HA specimen would be suitable candidate material as the scaffolds for the restoration of bone defect.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the titanium implant soaked in saline after RBM surface treatment on the initial osseointegration by comparing the removal torque and the surface analysis compared to the titanium implant with only RBM surface treatment. Materials and methods: The control group was RBM surface treated implants (RBM), and the test group was implants soaked in saline for 2 weeks after RBM surface treatment (RBM+Sal). The control and test group implants were placed in the left and right tibiae of 10 rabbits, respectively, and at the same time, the insertion torque (ITQ) was measured. After 10 days, the removal torque (RTQ) was measured by exposing the implant site. FE-SEM, EDS, Surface roughness and Raman spectroscopy were performed for the surface analysis of the new implant specimens used in the experiments. Results: There was no significant difference in insertion torque and removal torque between RBM surface treated titanium implants and saline-soaked titanium implants after RBM surface treatment. Conclusion: Saline soaking after RBM surface treatment of titanium implants did not positively affect the initial osseointegration as compared to titanium implants with only RBM surface treatment.
Bone grafting is widely used to bridge major bone defects or to promote bone union. In the evaluation of bone defect regeneration, 5 mm-diameter defects were created in rabbit calvaria. Concerning biocompatibility, fibrous capsule thickness of CBHA (hydroxyapatite from cuttlebone) was significantly thinner than that of CB (cuttlebone) and CHA (hydroxyapatite from coral) (p < 0.05) at 2 and 4 weeks after implantation. Concerning 12-week total changes of radiologic gray-level histogram, CBHA was significantly higher than CHA (p < 0.05). In the evaluation of bone defect regeneration, bone formation of CHA was significantly higher than that of CB and CBHA (p < 0.05). Based on the clinical and histological results, CBHA would be a safe material for use inside the body and has more effective osteoconduction than CB. It is suggested that CBHA is a valuable bone graft material.
