  • The effect of a highly water absorbing polyacrylate polymer, commonly called K-sorb, at rates of 0.0, 0.05, 0.2, and 0.5% by weight on the water retention properties of three soils, and the longevities of these treatment effects were evaluated. Water retentions were measured for all the treatments by use of a pressure-plate extractor in the laboratory. Available water and three-phase distributions at moisture tensions of 0.01, 0.3, and 15b were calculated from water retentivity data. A randomized block experiment of Chinese cabbages was conducted to examine the effects and the longevities of the treatments(0.0, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2%) on water retention of Jungdong sandy loam soil in the field. Water retentions for a loamy sand, sandy loam, and loam soil, treated with 0.2 and 0.5% K-sorb, were increased. K-sorb treatments were more effective in sandy soil than in loamy soils. Water contents for the 0.5% treatment were markedly greater than those for the 0.2% treatment at earth moisture tension. K-sorb only at a rate of 0.5% remained effective in water retention of each soil through repeated drying and wetting for 12 months. Duncan's multiple range showed 0.2% treatment was effective(at the level of 0.05) after 2 months but not after 10 months under field condition.

  • Suction of unsaturated bentonite buffers is a very important input parameter for hydro-mechanical performance assessment and design of an engineered barrier system. This study analyzed suction measurement techniques and constitutive models of unsaturated porous media reported in the literature, and suggested suction measurement techniques and constitutive models suitable for bentonite buffer in an HLW repository. The literature review showed the suction of bentonite buffer to be much higher than that of soil, as measured by total suction including matric suction and osmotic suction. The measurement methods (RH-Cell, RH-Cell/Sensor) using a relative humidity sensor were suitable for suction measurement of the bentonite buffer; the RH-Cell /Sensor method was more preferred in consideration of the temperature change due to radioactive decay heat and measurement time. Various water retention models of bentonite buffers have been proposed through experiments, but the van Genuchten model is mainly used as a constitutive model of hydro-mechanical performance assessment of unsaturated buffers. The water characteristic curve of bentonite buffers showed different tendencies according to bentonite type, dry density, temperature, salinity, sample state and hysteresis. Selection of water retention models and determination of model input parameters should consider the effects of these controlling factors so as to improve overall reliability.

  • The quality characteristics of a surimi-based product with sea tangle single cell detritus (SCD) were studied in order to utilize SCD from sea tangle as a food additive. Mixture design and regression models were applied to optimize the processing conditions and to investigate the interaction between surimi and the other ingredients. Surimi and SCD decreased hardness and cohesiveness of surimi gels, and then increased them. Water increased hardness and then decreased it, whereas cohesiveness was reversed. Surimi and water increased gumminess and brittleness of surimi gels, but SCD decreased them. SCD increased water retention ability (WRA) and whiteness of surimi gels, whereas water decreased it. Hardness and cohesiveness fitted nonlinear models by ANOVA, but gumminess, brittleness, WRA and whiteness fitted linear models. The response constraint coefficient showed that surimi influenced hardness and whitenessmore than water and SCD, whereas water influenced WRA more than surimi and SCD. Moreover, SCD influenced cohesiveness, gumminess and brittleness more than surimi and water. Hardness and cohesiveness fitted nonlinear models with interaction terms for surimi-SCD and surimi-water, respectively. Optimum mixed ratio values of surimi, water, and SCD were 36.80, 57.07 and 4.14%, respectively, by mixture model.

  • The objective of this study was to get information about water retention characteristics of horticultural substrates used in Korea determined by European standard method. Water retention curves were prepared at water volume (v/v, %) in relation to -10 cm, -50 cm, -100 cm water pressure head. Water retention curves showed different properties depending upon the type, the place of origin, particle size, and manufacturing processes of substrates. Peat and coir had easily available water content in the range of 30-40% and showed high water holding capacity, water buffering capacity, and aeration for plant growth. However, bark, sawdust and rice hull showed low water holding capacity about below 10%. The easily available water content of perlite and clay ball was low about 0.1-13.8%, whereas that of vermiculite and rockwool granulate was high about 25.9-52.0%. Understanding water retention characteristics of growing substrates is very important in cstablisliing optimum condition for plant growth. Further study on water retention curves for more substrates, mixture and growing media is needed.

  • As research on a controlled environment system based on crop growth environment sensing for sustainable production of horticultural crops and its industrial use has been important, research on how to properly utilize soil moisture sensors for outdoor cultivation is being actively conducted. This experiment was conducted to suggest the proper method of utilizing the TEROS 12, an FDR (frequency domain reflectometry) sensor, which is frequently used in industry and research fields, for each orchard soil in three regions in Korea. We collected soils from each orchard where fruit trees were grown, investigated the soil characteristics and soil water retention curve, and compared TEROS 12 sensor calibration equations to correlate the sensor output to the corresponding soil volumetric water content through linear and cubic regressions for each soil sample. The estimated value from the calibration equation provided by the manufacturer was also compared. The soil collected from all three orchards showed different soil characteristics and volumetric water content values by each soil water retention level across the soil samples. In addition, the cubic calibration equation for TEROS 12 sensor showed the highest coefficient of determination higher than 0.95, and the lowest RMSE for all soil samples. When estimating volumetric water contents from TEROS 12 sensor output using the calibration equation provided by the manufacturer, their calculated volumetric water contents were lower than the actual volumetric water contents, with the difference up to 0.09-0.17 m3·m-3 depending on the soil samples, indicating an appropriate calibration for each soil should be preceded before FDR sensor utilization. Also, there was a difference in the range of soil volumetric water content corresponding to the soil water retention levels across the soil samples, suggesting that the soil water retention information should be required to properly interpret the volumetric water content value of the soil. Moreover, soil with a high content of sand had a relatively narrow range of volumetric water contents for irrigation, thus reducing the accuracy of an FDR sensor measurement. In conclusion, analyzing soil water retention characteristics of the target soil and the soil-specific calibration would be necessary to properly quantify the soil water status and determine their adequate irrigation point using an FDR sensor.

  • Target parameters such as water solubility index (WSI), intrinsic viscosity (IV), water holding capacity (WHC), oil holding capacity (OHC), soluble dietary fiber (SDF) and microstructure were investigated on three different screw configurations during twin-screw extrusion of wheat bran. WSI of raw wheat bran (RWB) was 13.7%, while that of extrudates ranged $16.3{\sim}23.2%$ when extruded using screw configurations with 5 reverse screw elements (RSE). It was found that the moisture content of RWB greatly affected WSI of extrudates. IV of wheat bran extrudates increased from 10.6 ml/g of RWB to $37.86{\sim}44.37\;ml/g$ of extrudates extruded using 3, 4 and 5 RSE, whose trend was highly related to the moisture content of RWB and the extrusion pressure. Multiplication of IV and soluble solid (SS) content exhibited good correlation $(R^2=0.85)$ with specific mechanical energy (SME). The results suggested that SS and molecular size are an important factor governed by the SME in solubilization of wheat bran. WHC increased with increasing feed rate and moisture content, while OHC decreased. SDF increased from 2.68% of RWB to $4.32{\sim}6.48%$ of extruded wheat bran, indicating the significant breakdown of cell wall components. Microstructure of the extrudates showed the distinct patterns of degradation and solubilization of cell wall structure, depending on the moisture content of RWB.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the storage characteristics of Sulgidduk, a kind of rice cake, added with Portulaca oleracea L. The effect of P. oleracea L. paste (0, 1, 3, or 5%) on the storage qualities of Sulgidduk was evaluated during storage period at $20{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ for 3 days. As the amount of P. oleracea L. paste increased, loss of water in P. oleracea L. Sulgidduk decreased. Textural properties by texture profile analysis showed that hardness of Sulgidduk added with 5% P. oleracea L. paste was the lowest among treated samples. However, the hardness of all Sulgidduks increased during storage, regardless of the addition amount of P. oleracea L. paste. In accordance with the texture results, differential scanning calorimetry exhibited that the enthalpy of Sulgidduk with 5% P. oleracea L. addition was the lowest, indicating the delaying effect of P. oleracea L. paste on retrogradation of rice cake. From these results, the addition of P. oleracea L. to Sulgidduk extended shelf-life by delaying retrogradation.

  • 1. IAA showed no significant growth of root primordia and then lateral root emerged at 2 days after IAA treatment. BA treatment, however, strongly inhibited the formation of root primordia and a few lateral roots, if any, emerged about 5 days after treatment. 2. Treatment of BA and Indol-B on the water retaining ability sampled 1, 3, 5 days after chemical treatment was apparent on the soybean sprouts sampled 5 days after treatment while the difference among the treatments was negligible when sampled 1 and 3 days after treatment. 3. BA stimulated ABA content in the hypocotyl while inhibited ABA content in the root of soybean sprouts. ABA may relate with water retaining ability. 4. Soaking the soybean seeds to several seed disinfectant chemical solution had no effect on the growth and elongation of soybean sprouts. 5. It can be recommended that container of soybean sprouts should be shut tight during growing period except irrigation because the ethylene accumulation in the container may stimulate hypocotyl swelling and inhibit length of soybean sprouts.

  • This study attempted to analyze the effects of cleansing oil on skin by preferred vegetable base oil. For this, a questionnaire survey was performed against 100 people, and their face washing habit and preferred vegetable base oils were examined. Based on the results, 4 different cleansing oils were prepared and experimented. The experiment was conducted against 10 adult women in their 20-30s, and moisture level, sebum level and trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) before and after the experiment were measured. After the test, satisfaction was measured, and the results found the followings: When asked what cleansing oil is most preferred by vegetable base oil type, 'rose hip oil' was the highest, followed by 'olive oil', 'apricot kernel oil' and 'camellia oil'. According to the clinical trials, both moisture and sebum levels increased before and after cleansing in all four cleansing oil types by the preferred vegetable base oil (p<0.001, p<0.001). In addition, TEWL decreased with a difference by base oil (p<0.01). According to a subjective satisfaction survey which was performed after the experiment, rose hip oil-contained cleansing oil (RHC) was the highest in terms of cleansing effect and satisfaction level. Consequently, it was confirmed that the cleansing oil by vegetable base oil improved skin conditions by protecting a skin barrier with a positive effect on the improvement of sebum and moisture levels and TEWL. Even though a preferred oil type and a satisfaction level may differ by preferred oil and feeling after use, cleansing oil by vegetable base can be helpful as a skin care product which eases skin dryness and protects a skin barrier.
