  • In this paper, the new beamforming is proposed for an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) system with multi-input multi-output(MIMO). Through the proposed Pre-FFT beamforming technique for MIMO-OFDM, the multibeams are formed toward each multi-transmitter antenna of the desired user. The proposed beamforming for MIMO-OFDM can reduce cochannel interference and get diversity gain in the multi-user environment. Therefore, the performance of MIMO-OFDM system is very improved. BER performance improvement of the proposed approach is investigated through computer simulation by applying it to MIMO-OFDM system in the multi-user environment.

  • The signal intelligence (SIGINT) technology is actively used for collecting various data, in a number of fields, including a military industry. In order to collect the signal information and data and to transmit/receive the collected data efficiently, the accurate angle-of-arrival (AOA) information is required and communication disturbance from the interference or jamming signal should be minimized. In this paper, we present the structure of an adaptive beam-forming satellite system based on the planar array antenna, for collecting and transmitting/receiving the signal information and data efficiently. The presented adaptive beam-forming system consists of an antenna in the form of a planar array, an AOA estimator based on the Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm, an adaptive Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (MVDR) interference canceler, a signal processing and D/B unit, and a transmission beamformer based on Minimum mean Square Error (MMSE). In addition, through the computer simulation, we evaluate and analyze the performance of the proposed system.

  • In this paper, we propose a downlink beamforming method which is considered common pilot channel for coherent detection and dedicated traffic channel for desired user in FDD/CDMA systems. The existing downlink beamforming system produces phase mismatch between traffic and pilot signals at desired mobile as well as interference to other mobiles. A new downlink beamforming method can solve above problem based on least squares method between reference function and beamforming function. A numerical analysis shows that the proposed downlink beamforming method matches well and gives low BER performance.

  • Antenna grouping algorithm is hybrid of beamforming and spatial multiplexing. In antenna grouping system, we partition $N_t$ transmit antennas into $N_r$ groups and use beamforming in a group, spatial multiplexing between groups. We can transmit $N_r$ data streams in the $N_t{\times}N_r$ antenna grouping system. With antenna grouping, we can achieve diversity gain through beamforming, and high spectral efficiency through spatial multiplexing. But if channel is ill-conditioned or there are some correlations between antennas, the performance of antenna grouping is seriously degraded and in that case, beamforming is the best transmit strategy. By selecting the antenna grouping mode when channel is well-conditioned and by selecting the beamforming mode when channel is ill-conditioned, we can prevent serious fluctuation of BER performance caused by varying channel condition and achieve the best BER performance. In this paper, we investigate mode selection algorithm which can select antenna grouping mode or beamforming mode. we also propose a simple mode selection criterion.

  • In this paper, a low complexity subcarrier allocation scheme is proposed for multiuser MIMO-OFDM systems with zero-forcing beamformer (ZFBF) so that the total transmit power can be minimized satisfying given target data rate. Since the optimal method requires very high computational complexity, we propose a low complextiy suboptimal method. Using the fact that the effective channel gain is proportional to the orthogonallity of channels of multiplexed users, a user set with the highest orthogonality of channel among users is assigned to each subcarrier in order to minimize required transmit power. The numerical results show that the proposed suboptimal method can reduce computational complexity with little performance loss.

  • The Signal Intelligence (SIGINT) system based on Angle-of-Arrival(AOA) estimation, interference suppression, and transmission beamforming techniques is a cutting edge technology for efficiently collecting various signal information. In this paper, we present the efficient structure of a satellite system consisted of an AOA estimator, an adaptive beamformer, a signal processing and D/B unit, and a transmission beamformer, for collecting signal information. For accurately estimating AOAs of various signals, efficiently suppressing interference or jamming signals, and efficiently transmitting the collected information or data, we employ Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC), Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (MVDR), and Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) algorithms, respectively. Also, we evaluate and analysis the performance of the presented satellite system through the computer simulation.

  • This paper describes the development and measurement results of C-band planar active phase array antenna for detecting and tracking radar(weapon-locating radar). The antenna is designed with 14 sub-arrays(12 main channels and 2 sidelobe blanking channels and approximately 3,000 elements of transmit-receive channel) to generate transmit and digital receive patterns. Using a near-field measurements facility, G/N, transmit patterns, and received patterns are measured. Receive patterns are implemented with digital beamforming by signal processing. The measurement results demonstrate that antenna design specifications were fulfilled.

  • The effectiveness of the phased array antenna in wireless power transfer systems is due to its ability to form a beam pattern towards the desired direction. To maximize the efficiency of wireless power transfer through beamforming, the transmitter must recognize the information on the optimal transmission path. To achieve this, the transmitter usually transmits pilot signals periodically and the receiver extracts the optimal beamforming weights using the pilot signals. The receiver then feeds the beamforming weights back to the transmitter. In general, the amount of feedback increases with the number of antennas, which causes feedback overhead when there is a large number of antennas. In this paper, we propose a feedback simplification scheme based on the far-field approximation method. The simulation results are provided to validate the impact of the simplified feedback on the beam pattern.

  • In this paper, the effects of transmit beamforming on downlink performance in DS-CDMA communication systems are investigated. The uplink and downlink in FDD systems use different carrier frequencies. If the downlink uses the same weighting vectors as the uplink, the antenna beam for downlink is formed with certain DOA shift and it thus affects the beamforming gain. So, the impacts of different frequencies on the downlink beam patterns are studied. One possible algorithm to convert uplink beamforming weights to downlink, which is called frequency-calibrated processing, is also evaluated to reduce the degradation of downlink performance due to different frequencies. Under frequency selective channels, the downlink chooses a PUPW beamforming scheme when the uplink employs a PPPW vectors. To form a beam pattern for a PUPW after combining the downlink PPPWs converted from the uplink PPPWs, three approaches are studied. One method is to consider only one dominant path and thus obtain a single main-beam. In the others, multiple-beams weighted with the magnitudes of all paths and equally weighted with all paths are constructed.
