  • In this study, the resistance of various reinforced concrete (RC) slabs subjected to contact detonation was assessed. In order to enhance the blast resistance, fibers and external FRP sheets were reinforced to RC slabs. In the experiment, the $2,000{\times}1,000{\times}100mm$ sized RC slabs were fabricated using normal concrete (NC), steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC), polyvinyl alcohol fiber reinforced cementitious composite (PVA FRCC), and ultra-high performance cementitious composites (UHPCC). The damage levels of RC slabs subjected to contact detonation were evaluated by measuring the diameter and depth of crater, spall and breach. The experimental results were compared to the analyzed data using LS-DYNA program and three different prediction equations. The diameter and depth of crater, spall and breach were able to be predicted using LS-DYNA program approximately. The damage process of RC slabs under blast load was also well expressed. Three prediction equations suggested by other researchers had limitations to apply in terms of empirical approaches, therefore it needs further research to set more analytical considerations.

  • Spinal epidural hematoma (SEH) can occur naturally or traumatically and is most common in patients with an underlying disease of the vascular structure or coagulation disorder. Most SEHs occur naturally for no apparent reason, and epidural hematoma caused by trauma is less common, comprising 1.0%-1.7% of total spinal injuries. Few reports of SEH induced cauda equine syndrome resulting from low-energy injury caused by osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures are available. The authors experienced a case of delayed SEH after hemorrhage due to a low-energy injury in an elderly patient. No cases in Korea have been reported; therefore, this case is reported with a review of the relevant literature.

  • The purpose of this study is to substantially understand and identify experienced social exclusion of the disabled in Korea. For this, the 8 times in focus interview implemented on 31 of the disabled with regard to disability type, gender, age, education, job etc. The results, firstly it found that participants experienced material deprivation due to inequality on economic distributions, and the multi-deprivation of social rights overall social systems and scopes resulted from the disability discrimination against the organization of society. Nextly, it represented that they got the exclusion from social participation and isolation and alienation in social relationships in the dimension of society. In that, particularly, a sort of invisible type of social exclusion such as an intolerant and double social norm and values is found, which has been impacted on their impairment or disability in the participants. This founded results contribute on applying fundamental data for political and practical implementations for social inclusion of the disabled, as well as theoretical building for conception of social exclusion of the disabled.

  • Brittle failure of Mesozoic granite in the Daejeon region is predicted using empirical analysis and numerical modeling techniques. The input parameters selected for these techniques were based on the results of laboratory tests, including damage-controlled tests. Rock masses that were considered to be strong during laboratory testing were assigned to "group A" and those considered to be extremely strong were assigned to "group B". The properties of each group were then used in the analyses. In-situ stress measurements, or the ratio of horizontal to vertical stress (k), were also necessary for the analyses, but no such measurements have been made in the study area. Therefore, k values of 1, 2, and 3 were assumed. In the case of k=1, empirical analysis and numerical modeling show no indication of brittle failure from the surface to1000 m depth. When k=2, brittle failure of the rock mass occurs at depths below 800 m. For k=3, brittle failure occurs at depths below 600 m. Although both the Cohesion Weakening Friction Strengthening (CWFS) and Mohr-Coulomb models were used to predict brittle failure, only the CWFS model performed well in simulating the range and depth of the brittle failure zone.

  • In general, the daily safety inspection activities, which investigate damages in structures and measures the size of the damage, have been relied heavily on the visual inspection so far. Since the probe of the condition and performance of facilities by such personnel is often dependent on the subjective judgment of the investigator, the consistency and repeatability of the probing results may reduce. Particularly, damage located in a difficult-to-reach place depends mainly on experience with the naked eye, and an unsafe method using a ladder has mainly applied when necessary. Therefore, in this study, we tried to propose a way of using images that can reduce the deviation between safety inspection investigators, enhance objectivity, and improve the safety of workers. In this study, we have applied homographic transformation as a method of correcting the image. As a result of analyzing the size of the damage in the corrected image of the test subject, it confirms that the accuracy of measuring the magnitude of the damage can satisfy the target levels of 5.0mm and 0.005m2, the target accuracy levels. As a result of the field verification test to which the proposed image correction technique applied, the coefficient of variation of the crack length in the structure decreased from 5.4~7.0% to 0.072~0.12%, and that of the damaged area from 10.9% to 1.6%. It confirms that the measurement accuracy is improved. Therefore, it is expected that this study on the image utilization technique in safety inspection activities can increase the accuracy of damage measurement and improve the reliability of the safety inspection reports and exterior survey drawings.

  • Infrastructure plays a crucial role in the industrial development and economic growth of a nation. However, recently, domestic infrastructure has been causing not only safety risks due to aging but also social and economic inefficiencies, increasing the need for maintenance. In particular, the deterioration rate of bridges is serious, so application of appropriate repair and rehabilitation methods and estimation of its quantity are required. In this study, frequently applied repair methods for bridges using data from the Facility Integrated Management System (FMS) were identified. the empirical correlation between damage volume and the repair volume was analyzed using Bridge Management System (BMS) data. The result of the analysis showed that the ratio of the repair volume to the damage volume was 1.0. The guideline, on the other hand, suggest 1.5 the ratio of the repair volume to the damage volume. Although the guidelines differently present more conservative figures considering safety, this study is significant in that it presents a practical ratio through data analysis results. This results can be used to develop a model that can calculate the amount of repair and rehabilitation of various facilities in the future.

  • In general, the tunnel stability during excavation is assessed by comparing measured displacements at roof and sidewall to control criteria. The control criteria were established based on the past experience that considered ground conditions, size of the tunnel cross section, construction method, supports, etc. Therefore, a number of researches on the control criteria using the critical strain have been conducted. However, the critical strain obtained from uniaxial compression tests have drawbacks of not taking damage in rock mass due to increase of stress level and longitudinal arching into account. In this paper, damage-controlled tests simulating stress level and longitudinal arching during tunnel excavation were carried out in addition to uniaxial compression tests to investigate the critical strain characteristics of granite and gneiss that are most abundant rock types in Korean peninsula. Then, the critical strains obtained from damage-controlled tests were compared to those from uniaxial compression tests; the former showed less values than the latter. These results show that the critical strain obtained from uniaxial compression tests has to be reduced a little bit to take stress history during tunnel excavation into account. Moreover, the damage critical strain was proposed to be used for assessment of the brittle failure that usually occurs in deep tunnels.
