  • In this paper, mutual coupling effect between antennas mounted on UAV(Unmanned Air Vehicle), operating In different frequency bands, is calculated for supposing efficient arrangement. For the calculation, FDTD method is used, simulation parameters are confined to distance between antennas, height of antennas, types of ground, etc. The simulation data are compared with those of other numerical method to confirm accuracy of the results. It is appeared that the critical factor of mutual coupling is height of an antenna relative to that of the other antenna.

  • Discrete noise signals from a small scale tactical unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) propeller were predicted numerically using time domain approach. Two-bladed 29 inch propeller in diameter and 150 kgf in gross weight were used for main parameters of the UAV based on the actual size of the similar scale vehicle. Panel method and Farassat formula A1 were adopted for aerodynamic and aeroacoustic analysis respectively. Time domain signals of both thickness and loading noises were transformed into frequency domain to analyze the discrete noise characteristics. Directivity pattern in a plane perpendicular to the rotating disc plane and attenuation of noise intensity according to double distance were also presented.

  • As avionics and mechanical devices have been developed, the size of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is getting smaller. However, the complicated and accurate missions are provided to the UAV. Among various types of UAVs, quadrotors are widely used for their availability by virtue of simple structure and hovering function. However, the control of quadrotor is highly constrained, because the quadrotor is an under-actuated system which has only 4 actuator inputs. To deal with this under-actuated problem, a new quadrotor model with two more actuators in addition to the 4 propeller inputs is provided to make the system fully-actuated. For the proposed model, a controller is designed using feedback linearization methods. To validate the model and to verify the performance of the proposed controller, numerical simulation is performed.

  • The rotorcraft-based unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) capable of performing close-range surveillance and reconnaissance has been developed. Trade studies on mission feasibility led to the adoption of a coaxial rotorcraft with twin rotors counter-rotating in one axis and driven by electric motors. A commercial off-the-shelf flight control computer(FCC) and a radio frequency modem were adopted for autonomous navigation. In order to achieve an aerial view, commercial charge-coupled device camera was also integrated into the vehicle. The performance of the completed vehicle was proved with manual flight test, and mission capability was verified through waypoint navigation flight after being equipped with FCC. This paper treats the whole process of design and system integration for development of the coaxial rotorcraft UAV.

  • Airworthiness certification of military aircraft is a government's certification that it must have airworthiness and ability to demonstrate its requested function and performance. NATO released STANAG-4671 to establish the minimum airworthiness requirements for UAVs between 150kg and 20,000kg MTOW in 2009. Up to now, there are no clear airworthiness certification criteria and guideline for small UAV which is less than 150kg. STANAG-4671 is used for military UAV airworthiness certification in Korea as Other Airworthiness Certification Criteria. However, since STANAG-4671 requires the same Target Level of Safety without regard to MTOW, excessive Target Level of Safety or design requirements could be applied to relatively small-medium UAV. In this paper, classification and criteria of airworthiness certification for military UAV were investigated and a Target Level of Safety was analyzed based on MTOW using ground victim criteria.

  • Small-scale UAS(Fusion technique of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles platform and Sensors, 'sUAS') opens various new applications in construction fields and so becoming progressively common due to the considerable potentials in terms of accuracy, costs and abilities. The purpose of this study is that the investigation of the validation on the utilization of sUAS for earth stockpile volume calculations on sites. For this, generate 3D models(DSM) with sUAS aerial images on an cone shaped soil stockpile approximately $270m{\times}300m{\times}20m$, which located at Baegot Life Park in Siheung-si, compared stockpile volume estimates produced by sUAS image analysis, against volume estimates obtained by GNSS Network-RTK ground surveying method which selected as the criteria of earth stockpile volume. The result through comparison and examination show(demonstrate) that there was under 2% difference between the volume calculated with the GNSS Network RTK data and the sUAV data, especially sUAS imaged-based volume estimate of a stockpile can be greatly simplified, done quickly, and very cost effective over conventional terrestrial survey methods. Therefore, with consideration of various plan to assess the height of vegetation, sUAS image-based application expected very useful both volume estimate and 3D geospatial information extraction in small and medium-sized sites.

  • This paper describes the design of navigation system for an unmanned target drone which is operated by Korean army as for anti-air gun shooting training. Current target drone is operated by pilot control of on-board servo motor via remote control system. Automatic flight control system for the target drone greatly reduces work load of ground pilot and can increase application area of the drone. Most UAVs being operated nowdays use high-priced sensors as AHRS and IMU to measure the attitude, but those are costly. This paper introduces the development of low-cost automatic flight control system with low-cost sensors. The integrated automatic flight control system has been developed by integrating combining power module, switching module, monitoring module and RC receiver as an one module. The performance of navigation for low cost unmanned aerial vehicle, unmanned target drone as our test bed in this paper is verified by both Hardware in the loop simulation(HILS) to test performance of GPS as GPS output frequency high and results of flight test.

  • This paper proposes an image processing algorithms for detection and tracking of aerial vehicles in short-range. Proposed algorithm detects moving objects by using image homography calculated from consecutive video frames and determines whether the detected objects are approaching aerial vehicles by the Probabilistic Multi-Hypothesis Tracking method(PMHT). This algorithm can perform better than simple color-based detection methods since it can detect moving objects under complex background such as the ground seen during low altitude flight and consider the characteristics of vehicle dynamics. Furthermore, it is effective for the flight test due to the reduction of thresholding sensitivity against external factors. The performance of proposed algorithm is verified by applying to the onboard video obtained by flight test.

  • A compact Q-band waveguide-to-microstrip transition for UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) radiometer applications is presented. The key features of this transition are simplicity, compactness, easy matching, and lower sensitivity to the dimensions and fabrication tolerances. The simple E-plane patch-type design is insensitive to the backshort cavity enclosure and misalignment between the waveguide and microstrip substrate. The primary parameters are optimized using a three-dimensional(3D) electromagnetic simulator(ANSYS HFSS). It exhibited better than 20-dB return loss at mid-band frequencies with less than 1-dB insertion loss for the back-to-back transition, and a return loss better than 15 dB over the frequency range of 36 GHz to 42 GHz.
