  • The optimal blank design method by sensitivity analysis has been applied to the formings of oil-pan, tailored blank and front panel as the examples. Die geometry is prepared by a commercial CAD system. Excellent results has been obtained between the numerical results and the target contour shapes. Through the investigation, the proposed systematic method of optimal blank design is found to be effective in the practical forming processes.

  • Process design is one of the most important fields in metal forming, where the finite element method has appeared a useful method for industrial applications. In this study, a program using the rigid plastic finite element has been developed for preform design in three-dimensional plastic deformation. The surface integration for calculation of the friction between die and workpiece has been implemented with care in numerical treatment. The developed program is applied to a precision coining process for designing an optimal punch.

  • This paper describes a method and a system for automatic generation of flanged cylinderical deep drawing process outlines. A process outline is a sequence of operation leading from the blank to the required finished part. The input is the dimension of final product and the output is the effective process outline to manufacture the product. That system is programmed by PROLOG language and is composed of facts and rules of manufacturing knowledge hierarchically.

  • A finite-element based forging simulator, POSFORM, for automatic computer simulation of two-dimensional and axisymmetric forging processes was introduced in this paper. POSFORM is characterized by solution accuracy, user-friendliness, applicability and extensibility. Basic principles and capabilities of the program were introduced. Several application examples found in cold or hot forging companies of automotive or mechanical parts were given.

  • The predictions of metal flow forging load optimal die angle and preform size are not so easy in turbine blade forging. First of all the quality of final product is influenced by side force which is one of the significant factors. in this study slab method is applied to determine optimal die angle minimizing side force and the position of preform Finally drawing of die design is obtained in optimal die angle with developing tool that is composed of Visual Basic.

  • Press accidents are one of the most popular industrial accidents. Two factors are considered to lead to press accidents, one is human, the other press machine itself. Accident itself is analyzed and concluded to be due to incomplete interaction between press and human. A press design considering safety as a methodology is introduced to reduce the industrial accidents by press machine, that is micro-inching locking system.

  • Superplastic forming/diffusion bonding(SPF/DB) processes are analyzed using a rigid visco-plastic finite element method. The optimum pressure-time relationship for a target strain rate and thickness distributions were predicted using two-node line element based on membrane approximation for plane strain shapes. Material behavior during SPF/DB of the integral structures with complicated shapes are investigated. The tying condition is employed for the analysis inter-sheet contact problems. A movement of rib structure is successfully prodicted during the forming.

  • An application-oriented approach to automatic pass schedule design in shape rolling was presented in this paper. The design approach and its related program are composed of several modules for input data, graphic display, data processing, calculation of design information, drawing of detailed pass shapes, database management and finite element analysis for design verification. The developed program was applied to automatic pass schedule design for a square-to-round bar shape rolling.

  • In the die casting process, the flow of liquid metal has significant influence on the quality of casting products and die life. For the optimal process design of gear housing of automobile transmission, various analyses were performed in this study by using computer simulation code, MAGMAsoft. The simulation has been focused on the molten metal behaviors during the mold filling and solidification stages for the sound casting products. Also internal defects were predicted by application of air pressure and feeding criteria.

  • In industrial practice caliber design in shape rolling depends on the designer's experience which in general is obtained through costly trial-and error process. Demonstrated in this paper is an application of the finite element method to the determination of optimal caliber shapes in shape rolling of LM-Guide.
