  • The dynamic responses of structure under impulsive loading have been investigated according to its duration, based on the theory of viscoplasticity which can appropriately represent the effects of plasticity and rheology simultaneously. The viscoplastic model has been implemented into the two-dimensional finite element system to solve plane stress, plane strain or axi-symmetric problems, and the implicit integration scheme, of which solutions are unconditionally stable for relatively large time step length, has been developed to simulate visoplastic straining with deriving the explicit relationship between stress and strain at a material point level. After simulation, one carefully concludes that the duration as well as magnitude of impulsive loading plays an important role in design of structures.

  • In the fabrication of welded built-up beams, longitudinal deformation occurs due to welding, and this obstructs improvement of productivity and quality. In this study, to estimate the deformation due to welding, a simplified thermal elasto-plastic analysis method is proposed and verified by experiments. From the results of the simplified analysis, it is clarified that deformation coefficients defined in this study are the function of fabrication parameters. Based on this simplified analysis, a method to simulate the fabrication procedures for the built-up beams can be developed.

  • This paper proposes a method to predict the ductility capacity of reinforced concrete beam-column joints failing in shear after the formations of plastic hinges at both ends of the adjacent beams. The current design code divides joints into two categories: Type 1 for structures in non seismically hazard area and Type 2 in seismically hazard area. While there are many researches related to joint shear strength in Type 1, those in regard to joint ductility capacity of Type 2 are scarce. This paper classified the ductility capacity of beam-column joints into column, joint panel, and beam deformability. Since a brittle failure such as shear or bond failure in the columns must be avoided, column deformability was calculated by elastic analysis. The plastic hinges of the adjacent beams affect joint deformability. Therefore, the prediction of joint deformability was calculated with consideration to the degradation of the diagonally compressed concrete due to the strain penetration.

  • Longitudinal elongation develops in reinforced concrete beams that exhibit flexural yielding during cyclic loading. The longitudinal elongation can decrease the shear strength and deformation capacity of the beams. In the present study, nonlinear truss model analysis was performed to study the elongation mechanism of reinforced concrete beams. The results showed that residual tensile plastic strain of the longitudinal reinforcing bar in the plastic hinge is the primary factor causing the member elongation, and that the shear-force transfer mechanism of diagonal concrete struts has a substantial effect on the magnitude of the elongation. Based on the analysis results, a simplified method for evaluating member elongation was developed. The proposed method was applied to test specimens with various design parameters and loading conditions.

  • Tensile deformation behavior with different strain rate was investigated. $Zr_{56.2}Ti_{13.8}Nb_{5.0}Cu_{6.9}Ni_{5.6}Be_{12.5}$ (bulk metallic glass alloy possessed crystal phase which was called $\beta$-phase of dendrite shape, mean size of $20{\sim}30{\mu}m$ and occupied 25% of the total volume) was used in this study. Maximum tensile strength was obtained as 1.74Gpa at strain rate of $10^2/s$ and minimum strength was found to be 1.6GPa at $10^{-1}/s$. And then, maximum plastic deformation occurred at the strain rate of $5{\times}10^{-2}/s$ and represented 1.75%, though minimum plastic deformation showed 0%. In the specific range of strain rate, relatively higher plastic deformation and lower ultimate tensile strength were found with lots of shear bands. The fractographical observation after tensile test indicated that vein like pattern on the fracture surface was well developed especially in the above range of strain rate.

  • By applying Eshelby's theory on the'transformation' and' inhomogeneity'problems of an ellipsoidal inclusion, a microscopic stress-strain is formulated for a composite material consisting of a matrix and a large number of aligned ellipsoidal inclusions. Some of the composites of practical interest, such as unidirectionally fiber- reinforced, Particle dispersion strengthened and layered composites can be treated by changing the axial ratios of the ellipsoidal inclusion. The macroscopic stress-strain relation obtained is applicable to elastic and elasto-plastic deformation of the composite in uniform loading.

  • Squeezing is a phenomenon that may occur in deep tunneling and could bring about a large plastic deformation, tunnel closure and collapse of tunnel supports. Therefore, quantitative estimations of deformation and stress from squeezing and its possibility are necessary for establishment of a rational tunneling method. This study carried out three dimensional numerical analyses using a strain softening model in order to simulate the behaviour of squeezing and to estimate deformation and yield area around tunnels quantitatively. Numerical analyses were performed for 42 cases of various stress and strength conditions. As a result, the maximum tangential stress and strength of rock mass ratio could estimate plastic deformation and yield depth around tunnels and equations of relations between them were proposed.

  • This study proposes finite element modeling of dislocation punching at cooling after consolidation in order to calculate the strength of particle-reinforced aluminum composites. The Taylor dislocation model combined with strain gradient plasticity around the reinforced particle is adopted to take into account the size-dependency of different volume fractions of the particle. The strain gradients were obtained from the equivalent plastic strain calculated during the cooling of the spherical unit cell, when the dislocation punching due to CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) mismatch is activated. The enhanced yield stress was observed by including the strain gradients, in an average sense, over the punched zone. The tensile strength of the SiCp/Al 356-T6 composite was predicted through the finite element analysis of an axisymmetric unit cell for various sizes and volume fractions of the particle. The predicted strengths were found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. Further, the particle-size dependency was clearly established.

  • Microstructural processes during high cycle fatigue are investigated according to plastic-strain hardening, crack formation, crack propagation and fracture. It is shown that the fatigue test resembles the uniaxial tensile test. The logarithm of the number of cycles to failure is proportional to the elongation in the tensile test. Under high cycle fatigue test, the strain is normally elastic. If the strain is absolutly elastic, fatigue could not result. But this is over simplication. Nearly all metals undergo a minor amount of plastic strain even at low stress. Damage accumulation leadling to crack formation can continue in the persistent slip bands at very low average plastic strain amplitude. In the tens sile test the overall specimen follows the failure procedure whilst in the high cycle fatigue test the local persistent slip band follows the failure procedure. However accumulations of strain per unit volume in the deforming region before failure in both cases are equal locally.
