Masonry infill walls are frequently used as interior partitions and exterior walls in low- or middle- rise RC buildings. In the design and assessment of buildings, the infill walls are usually treated as non-structural elements and they are ignored in analytical models because they are assumed to be beneficial to the structural responses. Therefore, their influences on the structural response are ignored. In the case of buildings constructed in the USA in highly seismic regions, infill walls have a lower strength and stiffness than the boundary frames or they are separated from the boundary frames. Thus, the previously mentioned assumptions may be reasonable. However, these systems are not usually employed in most other countries. Therefore, the differences in the seismic behaviors of RC buildings with/without masonry infill walls, which are ignored in structural design, need to be investigated. In this study, structural analyses were performed for a masonry infilled low-rise RC moment-resisting frame. The infill walls were modeled as equivalent diagonal struts. The seismic behaviors of the RC moment-resisting frame with/without masonry infill walls were evaluated. From the analytical results, masonry infill walls can increase the global strength and stiffness of a structure. Consequently, the interstory drift ratio will decrease but seismic forces applied to the structure will increase more than the design seismic load because the natural period of the structure decreases. Partial damage of the infill walls by the floor causes vertical irregularity of the strength and stiffness.
The FUel Rod Analysis(FURA) code is developed using two-dimensional finite element methods for axisymmetric and plane stress analysis of fuel rod. It predicts the thermal and mechanical behavior of fuel rod during normal and load follow operations. To evaluate the exact temperature distribution and the inner gas pressure, the radial deformation of pellet and clad, the fission gas release are considered over the full-length of fuel rod. The thermal element equation is derived using Galerkin's techniques. The displacement element equation is derived using the principle of virtual works. The mechanical analysis can accommodate various components of strain: elastic, plastic, creep and thermal strain as well as strain due to swelling, relocation and densification. The 4-node quadratic isoparametric elements are adopted, and the geometric model is confined to a half-pellet-height region with the assumption that pellet-pellet interaction is symmetrical. The pellet cracking and crack healing, pellet-cladding interaction are modelled. The Newton-Raphson iteration with an implicit algorithm is applied to perform the analysis of non-linear material behavior accurately and stably. The pellet and cladding model has been compared with both analytical solutions and experimental results. The observed and predicted results are in good agreement. The general behavior of fuel rod is calculated by axisymmetric system and the cladding behavior against radial crack is used by plane stress system. The sensitivity of strain aging of PWR fuel cladding tube due to load following is evaluated in terms of linear power, load cycle frequency and amplitude.

Thermo-elastic-plastic analyses used in solving plate forming process are often computationally expensive. To obtain an optimal process of line heating typically requires numerous iterations between the simulation and a finite element analysis. This process often becomes prohibitive due to the amount of computer time required for numerical simulation of line heating process. Therefore, a new techniques that could significantly reduce the computer time required to solve a complex analysis problem would be beneficial. In this paper, we considered factors that influence the bending effect by line heating and developed inference engine by using the concept of artificial neural network. To verify the validity of the neural network, we used results obtained from numerical analysis. We trained the neural network with the data made from numerical analysis and experiments varying the structure of neural network, in other words varying the number of hidden layers and the number of neurons in each hidden layers. From that we concluded that if the number of neurons in each hidden layers is large enough neural network having two hidden layers can be trained easily and errors between exact value and results obtained from trained network are not so large. Consequently, if there are enough number of training pairs, artificial neural network can infer similar results. Based on the numerical results, we applied the artificial neural network technique to deal with mechanical behavior of line heating at simulation stage effectively.

It is known that thermo-mechanical properties of solder material and molding compound in WB-PBGA packages are considerably affected by not only temperature but elapsed time. In this paper, finite element analysis (FEA) taking material nonlinearity into account was performed for more reliable prediction on deformation behavior of a lead-free WB-PBGA package, and the results were compared with experimental results from moire interferometry. Prior to FEA on the WB-PBGA package, it was carried out for two material layers consisting of molding compound and substrate in terms of temperature and time-dependent viscoelastic effects of molding compound. Reliable deformation analysis for temperature change was then accomplished using viscoplastic properties for solder ball and viscoelastic properties for molding compound, and the analysis was also verified with experimental results. The result showed that the deformation of WB-PBGA packages was strongly dependent on material model of molding compound; thus, temperature and time-dependent viscoelastic behavior must be considered for the molding compound analysis. In addition, viscoelastic properties of B-type molding compound having comparatively high glass transition temperature of $135^{\circ}C$ could be recommended for reliable prediction on deformation of SAC lead-free WB-PBGA packages.
In this study, a particle method without using grid was applied for analysing large deformation problems in soil flows instead of using ordinary finite element or finite difference methods. In the particle method, a continuum equation was discretized by various particle interaction models corresponding to differential operators such as gradient, divergence, and Laplacian. Soil behavior changes from solid to liquid state with increasing water content or external load. The Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion was incorporated into the particle method to analyze such three-dimensional soil behavior. The yielding and hardening behavior of soil before failure was analyzed by treating soil as a viscous liquid. First of all, a sand column test without confining pressure and strength was carried out and then a self-standing clay column test with cohesion was carried out. Large deformation from such column tests due to soil yielding or failure was used for verifying the developed particle method. The developed particle method was able to simulate the three-dimensional plastic deformation of soils due to yielding before failure and calculate the variation of normal and shear stresses both in sand and clay columns.

IPM bridge is an integral bridge that can be applied from span 30.0m up to 120.0m, the shape conditions of IPM bridge is also applicable to the rahmen bridge. In this study, to perform the structural analysis of Rahmen bridge and IPM Bridge, the researchers compared the distribution types such as load, moment, and displacement of those bridges. Structural analysis was carried out on four span models ranging from single span bridges to four spans of 120.0 m, based on span length of 30.0 m. Structural analysis was carried out on those bridge with span 30.0m up to 120.0m. The conclusions drawn from this study are as follows. 1) The bending moments were calculated to be large for the Rahmen bridge, and the horizontal displacements were estimated to be large for the IPM bridge. 2) Since the bending moments are derived by the span length rather than the extension of the bridge, the permissible bending moment for the span length should be considered in the design. 3) The pile bent of the IPM bridge did not exceed the plastic moment of the steel pipe pile at 120.0m span, but because the horizontal displacement in the shrinkage direction is close to 25mm, the design considerations are needed. 4) In the actual design, it is important to ensure stability against member forces, so review of the negative moment is most important.

Because the pile-bent of IPM Bridge is projected from the soil surface, excessive displacement of abutment can be induced. According to design guide of IPM Bridge, the shape of the bridges used in this study was applied to the maximum applicable 120.0m span, 30-degree for skew angle, and 10.0m for the protruded pile-bent height. The maximum displacement by the maximum span application condition of the IPM Bridge was calculated using this bridge model, and the safety of a horizontal displacement of the IPM Bridge was investigated based on the allowable displacement presented by Bozozuk. The maximum horizontal displacement of the IPM Bridge was calculated to be larger in the winter shrinkage condition than in the summer expansion condition, the horizontal displacements were more affected by the length of a bridge than by the skew angle. And the vertical displacement was not affected by the skew angle and length. As the span increases, the horizontal displacement increases significantly, the horizontal displacement at 120.0m span length was found to exceed the allowable displacement proposed by Bozozuk. However, the moment generated in the pile-bent did not exceed the plastic moment.

In performing the structural analysis, the foundation is considered to be a fixed end as a plastic hinge model. In this study, the displacements of the foundation, pier, and shoe were compared when the foundation modeled as a fixed end, a shallow foundation constructed on bedrock of 2m depth, and a pile foundation constructed in the 10m to 20m depth of bedrock. The shear force was also compared, and the probability of damage was calculated and compared for the critical condition. When calculated as a fixed end, the displacement of the foundation converged to 0mm, but the shallow foundation built on the bedrock with a depth of 2m caused relatively displacement, and the pile foundation constructed to contact the bedrock with a depth of 18m caused a larger displacement. In addition, it was analyzed that the displacement of the foundation, which is the lower structure, affects the displacement of the super structure, but the difference in shear force applied to the foundation was insignificant in the three cases. There was no difference between the shallow foundation and the pile foundation in the influence on the displacement of the top of the pier, but there was a big difference from the analysis assuming as a fixed end.
Recent studies have actively investigated ways to improve the economic feasibility and efficiency of the Fischer-Tropsch process by increasing the yields of the monocyclic aromatic compounds (BTEX). In this study, ethylene was selected as a model of F-T-derived hydrocarbons, and the ethylene-to-aromatics (ETA) reaction was investigated according to changes in acid characteristics, mesopores, and crystallinity of HZSM-5 (HZ5). Fluorinated HZ5 was prepared by calcination followed by impregnation of an aqueous NH4F solution having different molar concentrations in HZ5, and the structural and chemical properties of F/HZ5 were investigated through Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), NH3-temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), and pyridine-IR spectroscopy. The ETA reactions were performed at 673 K under 0.1 MPa, and fluorinating HZ5 by an aqueous NH4F solution of 0.17 M improved ethylene conversion, BTEX selectivity, and catalytic stability due to acidity, mesopore fraction, and crystallinity.

When a new tunnel is excavated by the drill and blast method near pre-existing underground structures or tunnels due to the region restricted condition such as urban area, the ground will be relaxed by the excavation. In this case, issues can be created in terms of stability of pre-existing underground structures. One of major factors determining the stability of pre-existing underground structures can be a separation distance between pre-existing underground structures and a newly excavated tunnel. The region of ground relaxation defined by the plastic zone due to new excavation can be varied by separation distance. In this study, in other to estimate an influence of new tunnel excavation in terms of separation distance on the stability of pre-existing large pipelines, two-dimensional scaled model tests using plaster were performed for six models which have a different separation distance, The results show that based on the analysis of induced displacement during tunnel construction, the displacement decreases as the separation distance between large pipeline and new tunnel is increased until the distance is 2.5 times of pipeline diameter. Beyond this point, however, the displacement has become stabilized.
