  • This research is focused on the inducement of the constitutive equation considering the creep strain component and on the development of a finite element method program. The purpose of this research was to contribute to the design of construction structures or to the construction management in soft clay ground through predicting the long-term strain of construction structures reasonably bused on the above program. Modified Cam Clay model was adopted to describe the elastic-plastic behavior of clayey soil. And in the calculation of the creep sprain, the secondary coefficient of consolidation C. was applied for considering the volumetric creep element and the constants m, $\alpha$, A were rosed by the empirical creep equation proposed by Singh 8E Mitchell for considering the deviatoric creep element. To examine the reliability of the program which is developed in this study, the estimated values by this program were compared with the theoretical solution and the experimental results. And the applicability of the developed program was found to be reliable from the sensitive analysis of each parameters used in this study. According to the results obtained from the application of the program on the field measurement data, the estimated values by the program were found with be consistent with the actual values. And from the analysis of the displacement of embankments, the case of considering the creep behavior induced much fower errors than the case of neglecting it. But the results obtained from considering the volumetric creep behavior only were slightly underestimated the results from considering the deviator creep behavior showed the slightly overestimated values. Therefore, it remains the task of further studios to develop the laboratory test devices to obtain the reliable creep parameters, and to select the appropriate soil parameters, etc.

  • Damage and overbreak of the remaining rock induced by blasting can not be avoided during tunnel construction which may result in either short-term or long-term tunnel instability. Therefore, in this paper, a methodology to take into account the effect of blast-induced damage in tunnel stability assessment is proposed. Dynamic numerical analysis was executed to evaluate damage and overbreak of the remaining rock for the most common blasting pattern in road tunnel. Rock damage was quantified by utilizing the damage variable factor which is adopted proposed in continuum damage mechanics. The damaged rock stiffness and the damaged failure criteria are used to consider the effect of rock damage in tunnel stability analysis. The damaged geological strength index of the damaged rock was newly proposed from the relationship between deformation modulus and geological strength index. Also the Hoek-Brown failure criteria of the damaged rock was obtained using the damaged geological strength index. Analysing the tunnel stability with the consideration of the blast-induced damage of remaining rock, it was found that the extend of plastic zone and deformation increased compared to the undamaged rock. Therefore the short-term or long-term tunnel stability will be threatened when the rock damage from blasting is ignored in the tunnel stability analysis.

  • The researches have recently progressed toward the use of the superelastic shape memory alloys (SMAs) to develop new smart control systems that reduce permanent deformation occurring due to severe earthquake events and that automatically recover original configuration. The superelastic SMA materials are unique metallic alloys that can return to undeformed shape without additional heat treatments only after the removal of applied loads. Once the superelastic SMA materials are thus installed at the place where large deformations are likely to intensively occur, the structural system can make the best use of recentering capabilities. Therefore, this study is intended to propose new buckling-restrained braced frames (BRBFs) with superelastic SMA bracing systems. In order to verify the performance of such bracing systems, 6-story braced frame buildings were designed in accordance with the current design specifications and then nonlinear dynamic analyses were performed at 2D frame model by using seismic hazard ground motions. Based on the analysis results, BRBFs with innovative SMA bracing systems are compared to those with conventional steel bracing systems in terms of peak and residual inter-story drifts. Finally, the analysis results show that new SMA bracing systems are very effective to reduce the residual inter-story drifts.

  • This study examined the problems of existing vehicles to propose alternatives to improve the crashworthiness of railway freight cars through collision acceleration analysis using a one-dimensional collision analysis method. A collision scenario of railway shunting and crash accidents was selected from the collision accident cases and international standards. A one-dimensional collision simulation using LS-DYNA was performed according to those scenarios. As a result, the acceleration level of the freight wagon was calculated to be under 2g and was predicted to meet the EN 12663 standard in the shunting situation. On the other hand, the result of crash simulation with an impact velocity between 10 and 15 km/h revealed the shock absorber capacity of the railway coupler to be insufficient in a crash situation, resulting in increased acceleration, and carbody deformation could be predicted. As a method of improving the crashworthiness, a deformation tube-type energy absorber was applied to the coupler system, and collision analysis was performed again with new energy absorption strategy. Overall, the simulation showed that the acceleration level was decreased by 12% of the conventional freight-car energy absorption system.

  • The efficiency of sewage treatment was ananlyzed selecting a sewage treatment plant in Gyeonggi-do where A2O process was applied. Statistical techniques based on the operation data of the sewage treatment were used. The main factors directly affecting the efficiency of the treatment process were analyzed using a GPS-X model. The correlation analysis and one-way ANOVA were performed. The T-N and NH4+-N values of the effluent did not generate statistically significant level (p-value:>0.05) when compared with C/N ration values. Removel of nitrogen components form sewage treatment plants were affected by temperature, HRT, SRT and DO. In the case of BOD, all operating factors were affected, while COD was affecte by factors of HRT, STR and DO. In simulations using GPS-X, the parameters that greatly influence was included the maximum sedimentation rate, the dependent nutrient microbial yield (anoxic), the phosphorus saturation coefficient, the dependent nutrient microbial killing rate, the dependent nutrient microbial maximum growth rate, and the independent trophic microorganisms. The maximum growth rate and the maximum setting rate were identified.

  • Rheological properties of rehydrated suspensions of two kinds of freeze dried Kochujang powders, processed at different freezing rates, were compared with raw Kochujang using Brookfield wide-gap rotational viscometer at $25^{\circ}C-60^{\circ}C$. Shear rates ranged from $0.1965\;sec^{-1}$ to $1.9650\;sec^{-1}$ and solid content ranged from 47% to 56%. Rehydrated suspensions of quickly frozen Kochujang powder and slowly frozen Kochujang powder, and raw Kochujang exhibited pseudoplastic behaviors with yield stress and presented thixotropic properties which followed the second-order kinetic behavior proposed by Tiu. Suspensions of Kochujang powders exhibited considerably higher decaying rates than raw Kochujang. The dependency of the equilibrium structure parameter on the shear rate was weak, and there were no significant differences among the values of structure parameters of three samples. The temperature dependency of the apparent viscosity of Kochujang suspension was fully expressed by Arrhenius equation and activation energies of suspensions of quickly frozen Kochujang powder and slowly frozen Kochujang powder, and raw Kochujang were 2.21, 2.18, and 2.32 Kcal/g.mole respectively. Consistency indices of three samples increased with solid content and decreased with temperature. Flow behavior indices of three samples showed no considerable dependency on the temperature and solid content. There were no significant differences in the rheological properties between two Kochujang powders.

  • Because of relatively heavy dead weight of concrete itself and unavoidable heat of massive concrete in bridge piers, circular hollow columns are widely used in Korean highway bridges. Since the occurrence of 1995 Kobe earthquake, there have been much concerns about seismic design for various infrastructures, inclusive of bridge structures. It is, however, understood that there are not much research works for nonlinear behavior of circular hollow columns subjected to eqrthquake motions. The objective of this experimental research is to investigate nonlinear behavior of circular hollow reinforced concrete bridge piers under the quasi-static cyclic load, and then to enhance their ductility by strengthening the plastic hinge region with glassfiber sheets. Particularly for this test, constant 10 cyclic loads have been repeatedly actuated to investigate the magnitude of strength degradation for the displacement ductility factor. Important test parameters are seismic design, confinement steel ratio, axial force and load pattern. It is observed from quasi-static tests for 7 bridge piers that the seismically designed columns and the retrofitted columns show better performance than the nonseismically designed colums, i.e. about 20% higher for energy dissipation capacity and about 70% higher for curvatures.

  • As the using rate of an explosive gas has been increased in the industrial site, the regional residents adjacent to the site as well as the site workers have frequently fallen into a dangerous situation. Damage caused by accident in the process using hydrogen gas is not confined only to the relevant process, but also is linked to a large scale of fire or explosion and it bring about heavy casualties. Therefore, personnel in charge should investigate the kinds and causes of the accident, forecast the scale of damage and also, shall establish and manage safety countermeasures. We, in Anti-Calamity Research Center, forecasted the scope of danger if break out a fire or/and explosion in hydrogen gas facilities of MLCC firing process. We selected piping leak accident, which is the most frequent accident case based on an actual analysis of accident data occurred. We select and apply piping leak accident which is the most frequent case based on an actual accident data as a model of damage forecasting scenario caused by accident. A jet fire breaks out if hydrogen gas leaks through pipe size of 10 mm ${\Phi}$ under pressure of 120 bar, and in case of $4kw/m^2$ of radiation level, the radiation heat can produce an effect on up to distance of maximum 12.45 meter. Herein, we are going to recommend safety security and countermeasures for improvement through forecasting of accident damages.

  • The use of the bearing capacity equation is subjected to several uncertainties. In this study, estimation of the bearing capacity of footings based on the cone resistance q$_{c}$ is investigated. Non-linear finite element analyses based on a state-dependent stress-strain model were performed to obtain the load-settlement responses of axially loaded circular footings. Various soil and footing conditions, including different relative densities, depths of embedment, and footing diameters were considered in the analyses. Based on the finite element results, load-settlement curves were obtained and used to determine the unit limit bearing capacity in terms of the cone resistance q$_{c}$ for footings subjected to surcharge. Values of the unit bearing capacity for different embedment depths were in a narrow range, while considerable variation was observed with relative density D$_{R}$. It was observed that the unit limit bearing capacity normalized with respect to q$_{c}$ decreases as D$_{R}$ increases for a given surcharge.

  • When constructing projects such as road embankments, bridge approaches, dikes or buildings on soft, compressible soils, significant settlements may occur due to the consolidation of these soils under the superimposed loads. The compressibility of the soil skeleton of a soft clay is influenced by such factors as structure and fabric, stress path, temperature and loading rate. Although it is possible to determine appropriate relations and the corresponding material parameters in the laboratory, it is well known that sample disturbance due to stress release, temperature change and moisture content change can have a profound effect on the compressibility of a clay. The early research of Tezaghi and Casagrande has had a lasting influence on our interpretation of consolidation data. The 24 hour, incremental load, oedometer test has become, more or less, the standard procedure for determining the one-dimensional, stress-strain behavior of clays. An important notion relates to the interpretation of the data is the ore-consolidation pressure ${\sigma}_p$, which is located approximately at the break in the slope on the curve. From a practical point of view, this pressure is usually viewed as corresponding to the maximum past effective stress supported by the soil. Researchers have shown, however, that the value of ${\sigma}_p$ depends on the test procedure. furthermore, owing to sampling disturbance, the results of the laboratory consolidation test must be corrected to better capture the in-situ compressibility characteristics. The corrections apply, strictly speaking, to soils where the relation between strain and effective stress is time independent. An important assumption in Terzaghi's one-dimensional theory of consolidation is that the soil skeleton behaves elastically. On the other hand, Buisman recognized that creep deformations in settlement analysis can be important. this has led to extensions to Terzaghi's theory by various investigators, including the applicant and coworkers. The main object of this study is to suggestion the modified compression index value to predict settlements by back calculating the $C_c$ from different numerical models, which are giving best prediction settlements for multi layers including very thick soft clay.
