  • The evolution of smartphones has led to numerous researches in the mechanical behavior of flexible devices. Due to the nano-size of the thin flexible film, nanoindentation is widely used to evaluate its mechanical behaviors, such as elastic modulus, and hardness. However, the commonly used Oliver-Pharr method is not suited for analyzing the indentation force-depth curves of hard films on soft substrates, as the effects of soft substrate is not considered theoretically. In this study, the elastic modulus of the thin film was evaluated with references to other reported models which include the substrate effect, and with calibration of the indentation depth for the pile-ups between the indenter and test surface. We fabricated test samples by deposition of amorphous metal film on polyimide and silicon wafers for verification of modified models.

  • The current trends in steel construction intend to use tapered sections to minimize as much as possible the use of excess material. This can be done by choosing the cross-sections to be as economical as possible, leaving the classical approach of using prismatic members. In addition, it is important to predict the buckling behavior of tapered member with large depth-to-thickness ratio in order to prevent the collapse of PEB system subjected to overloads. An experimental investigation of buckling behavior of tapered beam was presented. The primary test parameter was depth-to-thickness ratio and taper ratio. Using initial stiffness and load-carrying capacity proposed by current provision, the simple plastic hinge method using modified Yoda's model and finite element analysis, the prediction of a moment-rotation curve of linearly tapered member was presented. Moreover, comparisons between analytical and experimental data for moment-rotation curves were accomplished.

  • Non-Newtonian fluid mechanics takes charge of an important role in the oil industries. Especially in the oil well drilling process, the drilling fluid such as mud keeps the drill bit cool and clean during drilling, with suspending drill cuttings and lubricating a drill bit. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of fluid mud rheological properties to predict different characteristics of non-Newtonian fluid in the mud mixing tank on offshore drilling platforms. In this paper, ANSYS fluent package was used for the simulation to solve the hydrodynamic force and to evaluate mud mixing time. Prediction of the power consumption and the pumping effectiveness has been presented with different operating fluid models as Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid. The comparison between Newtonain mud model and non-Newtonian mud model is confirmed by the CFD simulation method of drilling mud mixing tank. The results present useful information for the design of the drilling mud mixing tanks and provide some guidance on the use of CFD tool for such non-Newtonian fluid flow.

  • In this study, material nonlinear finite element program is developed to analyze reinforced concrete shell of arbitrary geometry considering tension stiffening effects. This study is capable of tracing the load-deformation response and crack propagation, as well as determining the internal concrete and steel stresses through the elastic, inelastic and ultimate ranges in one continuous computer analysis. The cracked shear retention factor is introduced to estimate the effective shear modulus including aggregate interlock and dowel action. The concrete is assumed to be brittle in tension and elasto-plastic in compression. The Drucker-Prager yield criterion and the associated flow rule are adopted to govern the plastic behavior of the concrete. The reinforcing bars are considered as a steel layer of equivalent thickness. A layered isoparametric flat finite element considering the coupling effect between the in-plane and the bending action was developed. Mindlin plate theory taking account of transverse shear deformation was used. An incremental tangential stiffness method is used to obtain a numerical solution. Numerical examples about reinforced concrete shell are presented. Validity of this method is studied by comparing with the experimential results of Hedgren and the numerical analysis of Lin.

  • An experimental design method was used to optimize the synthesis of gamma-alumina with a superior thermal stability using the reverse micelle method. First, twelve experimental conditions were derived by using the mixture design method to optimize conditions for the ratio of surfactant, water and oil, which are main factors in the synthesis process. When the particles synthesized by reverse micelle method were calcined at $900^{\circ}C$ under the designed condition, they all had gamma-alumina crystal structure although there were differences in particle sizes. The coefficient of determination of the second-order regression model using the derived experimental results was 93.68% and the P-value was 0.002. The synthesis conditions forgamma-alumina with various particle sizes were presented using surface and contour lines. As a result, it was calculated that the smallest particle size of about 2.8 nm was synthesized when the ratio of surfactant/water/oil was 0.3450/0.0729/0.5821.

  • Mg-Al mixed oxides with molar ratio of Mg/Al = 1-3 were prepared by co-precipitation and characterized by using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, BET surface area and pore volume measured by $N_2$ sorption analysis, and temperature programmed desorption of iso-propanol. As Al content in Mg-Al mixed oxide increased, the acidity and BET surface area proportionally increased. This increase of acidity directly influenced the catalytic activity of iso-propanol conversion and selectivity to propylene.

  • The procedure of the elastic response spectrum method which is used in the codes of many countries involves the computation of a static horizontal substitute loading resulting from the earthquake. The substitute loading is divided by a behavioral factor in order to take energy dissipation due to the real nonlinear structural behavior and damping effects ect. into account. The behavioral factors widely used in many countries are based not on the exact calculation but only on the empirical data. In order to determine the behavioral factors analytically, it is necessary to define the limit state of structures as a first step. In this work, the methods of the determination of limit state for the steel structures are discussed in the geometric, serviceabile and material apsects, and the behavioral factors for the three types of structures are calculated.

  • Numerical analysis using FLACSD has been conducted to estimate the stability of a large underground hall that is to be excavated in a mined area and constructed as an unit of a resort park. Numerical modelling is divided into two stages. The first stage is related to the analysis of the mechanical stability of the hall itself and the second to that of the influence of an adjacent mined cavity upon the hall. In the first stage, the stability of the hall is judged from the interpretation of numerical results in three respects: convergence of the unbalanced force of the model, occurrence of plastic zones and distribution of the displacement. In the second stage, variation of the stress state around the underground hall due to the existence of the cavity is compared to that in the case of the absence of the cavity. Through these analyses, it could be known that the large underground hall is not exposed to any mechanical problems and also not affected by the adjacent cavity. Key words : 3D numerical analysis, large underground cavern, stability analysis
