A Numerical Study of Fire Dynamics of The Enclosed Compartment with Window Glass Breaking (밀폐된 구획의 창유리 파단시 화재 특성에 관한 수치적 연구)

  • The use of computer supported fire safety engineering calculations has grown significantly in recent years and will be increased rapidly. In this study, in order to examine for fire dynamics of the enclosed compartment with window glass(3mm, 4mm thickness) when the window glass breaks, we conducted numerical computer simulations about foam sofa fire with the zone type computer mode, FASTLite package(version 1.1.2) and the Berkeley algorithm for breaking window glass in a compartment fire, BREAK1 program (version 1.0). The analysis of the results in this paper shows that there are differences of fire dynamics between open-or enclosed-state compartment fire and the enclosed compartment fire with window glass breaking. It is also shown in this study that backdraft phenomenum occurs due to accumulated unburned combustible fuel when the glass of 4mm thickness breaks, and that temperature differences between the inner-and outer-surfaces of 3mm and 4mm thick glasses are appreciable. This study will help fire fighter to establish fire suppression or occupant's refuge strategies and fire safety engineer to enhance simulation techniques about the five dynamics of compartment fire.

  • A primary task of fire department is maintaining public safety, system maintenance and welfare improvement by protecting life, body and property of a people through prevent and extinguish of the fire in emergency. Rescue part of those affairs has supported by the people but affairs related to the fire examination and investigation could not get it. Although fire examination is a very important part of fire department administration, it has been understood indifferently due to lack of awareness and concern. There are no scientific fire examination because of lacking education study and the whole responsibility capacity about it. There are many things have to be improved at fire examination and investigation system in Korea. Especially, establishment of the whole responsibility post is urgent through assuring professionals to improve accuracy of fire examination and investigation. Equipment which can do scientific fire examination and investigation have to be fully furnished. Efficiency of fire examination and investigation has to be increased through improving law related to fire examination and investigation, giving rescuers investigation right. Through this, it systematically have to be good for fire prevent.

A Study on the Impact Scope from Hazardous Chemicals Leakage in Jeju Area - Focused on hydrogen fluoride - (제주지역 유해화학물질 누출사고 시 영향범위에 관한 연구 - 불화수소 중심으로 -)

  • In this study, the AERMOD air diffusing model was used to estimate the range of influence of Hazardous chemicals (hydrogen fluoride) in case of small accidents in Jeju area. The impact scope were in the order of Seogwipo Fire Station, Dongbu Fire Station, Jeju Fire Station, and Seobu Fire Station. Seasonal orders were summer, spring, autumn and winter. The correlation between the meteorological factors shows a strong positive correlation with the wind speed of 0.998 and has a negative correlation with the temperature of -0.463. Through the linear regression analysis, we could estimate the equation of Impact scope = 13.922WS (Wind Speed) - 5.195 and the reliability ($R^2$) was as high as 0.995.

Development of cardiopulmonary resuscitation training program for firefighters (화재진압대원을 위한 심폐소생술 훈련프로그램 개발)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to develop a cardiopulmonary resuscitation training program for firefighters (FD-CPR) to help improve the survival rate after cardiac arrest on the fireground. Methods: The FD-CPR was developed following 3 steps of the FD-CPR instructional design based on the behaviorism theory. The content of the program was validated by a group of 7 experts using the contents validity index (CVI) and through a pilot-test. Results: A scenario consisting of 7 procedures, and a skill performance evaluation tool consisting of 16 questions were developed. The evaluation tool average score for the difficulty test was 41.16% (even) and that for the discrimination test was 0.32 (high). Subsequently, an 80 min training program was developed. As verified by the 7 experts through the CVI, it was as high as 1.0. Conclusion: The FD-CPR developed domestically for the first time in this study was effective in enhancing the CPR performance skills of the firefighters. If FD-CPR is added to the curriculum at the Fire Service Academy educational course for the new firefighters, the CPR performance skills could be maintained. Furthermore, the program can facilitate a better survival rate for colleagues having cardiac arrest on the field.

Calculation of Uncertainty in Measuring Heat Release Rate in Room Corner Test (룸코너 시험기의 발열량 측정에 대한 불확도 산정)

  • In fire test, accurate heat release rate measurements provide important information to define the fire safety characteristics of products. The calculation of heat release rate depends on the errors of measuring parameters in experimental set-up. In this study, the uncertainty factors of heat release rate in the room corner test facility, which is installed at Korea Railroad Research Institute, were analyzed. Through the fire testings for the KTX interior materials, the uncertainties of heat release rate were calculated. Results showed that uncertainty was high in the initial stage of fire test and gradually decreased with the growth of fire. The oxygen concentration was a major factor contributing to the combined relative standard uncertainty.

  • With the huge navy projects such KDX-III, LPX, bigger and more complicated vessel constructions are being underway in navy. In this paper, considering these trends, we performed a risk analysis on the navy vessel for the fatality of soldiers on board and presented the risk level with FN curve. Assuming a fire occurs in one of the soldier bedrooms, we established event tree to visualize the possible development scenarios and calculated the fatality for each scenario. The critical condition to survive inside the bedroom was obtained through CFAST program.

The Investigation of Combustible Hazard by Measurement of Flash Point and Autoignition Temperature of n-Dodecane (노말도데칸의 인화점과 최소발화온도 측정에 의한 연소위험성 고찰)

  • For the safe handling of n-dodecane, the explosion limits were investigated and the lower flash points and AITs (autoignition temperatures) by ignition delay time were experimented. By using the literatures data, the lower and upper explosion limits of n-dodecanee recommended 0.6 Vol.% and 4.7 Vol.%, respectively. The lower flash points of n-dodecane by using closed-cup tester were experimented $77^{\circ}$ and $80^{\circ}C$. The lower flash points of n-dodecane by using open cup tester were experimented $84^{\circ}C$ and $87^{\circ}C$. This study measured relationship between the AITs and the ignition delay times by using ASTM E659-78 apparatus for n-dodecane. The experimental AIT of n-dodecane was $222^{\circ}C$.

Study on the Available Safe Egress Time (ASET) Considering the Input Parameters and Model Uncertainties in Fire Simulation (화재시뮬레이션에서 입력변수 및 모델 불확실도가 고려된 허용피난시간(ASET)에 관한 연구)

  • To improve the reliability of a safety assessment using a fire simulation in domestic PBD, the evaluation method of ASET considering the uncertainties of the input parameters and numerical model of fire simulation was carried out. To this end, a cinema and officetel were selected as the representative fire spaces. The main results were as follows. Considering the uncertainty of the heat release rate, which has the greatest effect on the major physical quantities presented in the life safety standard, significant changes in temperature, CO, and visibility occurred. In addition, when the bias factors reflecting the uncertainty of the numerical model were applied, there were no significant changes in temperature and CO concentration. On the other hand, the visibility was increased considerably due to the low prediction performance of smoke concentration in FDS. Finally, the reason why the physical quantity determining the ASET in domestic PBD is mainly visibility was discussed, and the application of uncertainty of the input parameters and numerical model in a fire simulation was suggested for an accurate ASET evaluation.

Mediating Effect of Ego Resilience on the Relationship between Adult Attachment and Job Stress of Fire Officers (소방공무원의 성인애착과 직무스트레스의 관계에서 자아탄력성의 매개효과)

  • This study was conducted to investigate whether ego - resilience plays a mediating role in the relationship between adult attachment and job stress of fire officers, and to derive implications for job stress reduction of fire officers. A questionnaire survey was conducted for 480 fire officers working in Seoul and Gyeonggi - do, and correlation analysis and regression analysis were conducted using SPSS 21.0. The results showed that there was a negative correlation between instability attachment and job stress in adult attachment, negative correlation between instability attachment and ego - resilience in adult attachment, and negative correlation between ego - resilience and job stress. Adult attachment and ego - The results showed that there was a statistically significant effect on stress. Ego - resilience was found to full mediate the effect of anxiety of adult attachment on job stress and to partial mediate the effect of avoidance on job stress. This study suggests the need to develop a program that can improve ego - resilience considering the importance of ego - resilience and the occupational characteristics of fire officer. This means that the psychological and psychological factors of the individual should also be considered in order to reduce the level of job stress of the fire service personnel.

The Actual State of Hospital-based Skill Training in Level 1 Emergency Medical Technician (소방 1급응급구조사의 병원임상수련 술기 실태 조사)

  • This study is the analysis of the actual state of hospital-based training in level 1 emergency medical technicians (EMTs) in fire station. The survey was carried out to 42 fire fighters having level 1 emergency medical technician certification from May 11 to 12 in 2012. The results showed 56.5 %, that the level 1 EMTs of roles had direct experienced. Level 1 EMTs performance frequency of clinical practice that endotracheal intubation 66.9 %, laryngeal mask airway 8.4 %, intravenous access 76.6 %, nitroglycerin sublingual 61.2 %, bronchodilator inhalation 50.0 %, fluid loading 73.8 %, ventilator apply 57.6 %, dextrose injection 57.6 %. It is necessary to investigate the continuous study on the education among the level 1 EMTs and the continuous evaluation and analysis of problems, supplemented of guidebook, practical education programs and regulation upon the operation and management of a hospital-based skill training.
