  • Hydrolysis of soda-lime waste glass was investigated to test the feasibility for use of waste glass as feed material in the production of foamed glass. The soda-lime glass, such as plate glass and various bottle glasses, was effectively hydrolyzed by steam and water under high pressure. The proper condition for the hydrolysis was found to be reaction temperature of $250^{\circ}C$ and reaction time of 2 h. Under this condition, the water content of hydrated glass through hydrolysis was 7.85~10.04%, allowing successful foaming process for production of foamed glass. Using Na as the modifying agent of glass was effective in the hydrolysis by water. The highest water content of hydrated glass was obtained when weight ratio of NaOH to the glass was 0.04.

  • An estimation method of glass viscosity using Lakatos model is one of the best way to calculate the viscosity of soda-lime glass. The glass viscosity is obtained by inputting a glass composition consisting of SiO2, Al2O3, Na2O, K2O, CaO and MgO to the Lakatos model. A series of composition of glass bottles was obtained once a month for 10 months from a soda-lime glass bottle fabrication line and isokom temperatures at the viscosity of log η = 3, 6.6, 10 and 12.3 were calculated. It was found that the isokom temperature at log η = 3 and log η = 6.6 was closely related to the value of (Si+Al)/O and 1/Na, respectively.

  • The goal of this study was to find an application method of the waste soda-lime glass as the feed material for foamed glass by foaming of hydrated waste glass. The proper conditions for the foaming of hydrated waste glass were found to be: temperature of $92.5^{\circ}C$; reaction time of 10~20 min; particle size of -325 mesh as the unhydrated glass starting materials; and graphite weight to the hydrated glass ratio of 0.003 as the foaming agent. The resulting formed glass made from hydrated mixed waste glass under above mentioned conditions had the characteristics of density less than $0.2g/cm^3$ and thermal conductivity of $0.05kcal/mh^{\circ}C$.

  • This study reports the CW $CO_2$ laser scribing of soda lime glass. In this study, scribing experiments are carried out at different laser powers, scan speeds, and focal positions to investigate the effect of the process parameters on the interaction characteristics between a laser beam and glass. In particular, the interaction characteristics are analyzed and described with the input laser energy per unit length. According to the experimental results, the damage threshold for the glass surface was found to exist between 0.072 and 0.08 J/mm. The input laser energy in this region induced partial melting of the surface and grain-shaped cracks. These cracks tended to increase as the input laser energy increased. At the laser input energy larger than 1 J/mm, a huge crack propagating along the scan direction was produced, and the volume below the scribed area was fully melted. The growth of this crack finally resulted in the complete cutting of the glass at the input laser energy above 8 J/mm. It was found that both the width and depth of the scribed line increased with increasing input laser energy. For the beam focusing at the rear surface, the width of the scribed line varied irregularly. This could be ascribed to the increased asymmetry of the beam intensity distribution when the laser beam was focused at the rear surface. Under this condition, a large burr was only produced on one side of the scribed line.

  • The effect of Al2O3 on isokom temperatures in soda-lime glass is estimated by comparing calculated isokom temperatures using viscosity model proposed by Lakatos. Substitution of SiO2 with Al2O3 by 0.5 mol% raises the isokom temperatures by 3.1, 3.3, 3.6 and 7.2℃ at the viscosity of log η = 12.3, 10, 6.6 and 1 (Pa·s), respectively. Meanwhile, replacing 0.5 mol% of CaO with Al2O3 raises the isokom temperatures by 1.6, 2.3, 4.1 and 17.7℃ at the viscosity of log η = 12.3, 10, 6.6 and 1 (Pa·s), respectively.

The isokom temperatures at the viscosity of log η = 12.3, 10, 6.6 and 1 (Pa·s) are lowered by 6, 7, 10 and 24℃, respectively, by the substitution of SiO2 with Na2O by 1 mol%. • Foaming process of waste soda lime glasses by just chemical composition control of vitreous feed materials was investigated to find a novel and efficient recycling process. For the chemical composition control of feed materials, 10 wt. parts of $SiO_2$, 0.5 wt. parts of $Na_2SO_4$, 3.0 wt. parts of $B_2O_3$, and 0.3 wt. parts of carbon black as the foaming agent were mixed with 100 wt. parts of soda-lime vitreous feed powder. Proper conditions for foaming process in tunnel kiln are the foaming temperature of $830{\sim}850^{\circ}C$, the foaming time of 30~35 min, and the vitreous feed powder particle size of -325 mesh. Properties of foamed glass blocks obtained under these foaming conditions showed the density of $0.17{\sim}0.21g/cm^3$, thermal conductivity of $0.06{\pm}0.005kcal/h{\cdot}m{\cdot}^{\circ}C$, moisture absorption of 1.1~1.5%, and compressive strength of $20{\sim}30kgf/mm^2$.

  • In micro-drilling of brittle materials including glass, cracks occur at the exit surface. In drilling glass, the main type of crack is cone crack. Cone crack is generated by thrust force acting at the bottom surface of the workpiece. Cone crack size could be reduced by changing cutting conditions, but cone crack still existed. Two methods were proposed to prevent crack formation and perfect hole shapes were obtained. One method is attaching two glass plates with water and the other method is constraining two glass plates. The proposed methods eliminated tensile stress acting on the exit surface of glass and prevented crack propagation.

  • The first aim of mass product of glass in Automatic bottle glass industry is to decrease the cost and to increase the quality. Second, the cullet is how widely used to save the energy and reducing of ecomaterials. However the physical and chemical properties of Soda-lime glass would be come true at the lower than 2% $Al_2 O_3$. Unfortunately the $Al_2 O_3$ contents of domestic silica is greater than 4% Since small glass class than 200ml bottle is made in domestic silica the producting efficiency would be decreased due to the defect such as cord, knot, devitrite, pore etc. There are many problems such as devitrifiacation and deteriorated effect on production in glass industry became of increasing of plate glass cullet. It is tried to solve these kinds of problems using various analysing methods in this experiments.
