In recent years Fiber optic hydrophone systems have been the focus of much attention in the sonar world. For sonar arrays, a fiber optic approach offers the major benefit of passive multiplexing of large numbers of hydrophones without underwater electronics. This paper describes recent development work covering array construction, opto-electronics development, hydrohpone design and sea trials. And the development of an interferometric mult-channel fiber optic hydrophone system which uses time division multiplexing capable of driving in excess of 32 channel is described. For this, a 12 channel time division multiplexing array has been constructed, and the performance of this system is demonstrated by sea trial.
This paper presents a study on the experimental analysis of the impedance characteristics according to the rotational direction of the transmission beam of a cylindrical sensor array. Besides, this suggests a real time control technique of the transmitter output for the effective maximum power transmission, in order to drive efficiently the rotational transmission beam of the active sonar transmitter. The output characteristics of the transmitter and the real-time impedance variations of the sensor array are analyzed under the overload conditions. They are caused by electric and acoustic boundary conditions when the rotational transmission beam is operated. From these results, a new output control method of the transmitter is proposed to protect the transmitter and its loads. It can maximize the output power without the transmission pause even if the transient phenomena occur. The proposed technique is verified from the experiment.

Sub-arrays of arbitrary conformal array have different geometric shape through steering direction, thus the beam patterns of sub-arrays are always non-uniform. In this paper, we apply the beam pattern synthesis method using convex optimization into the conformal array, and shows the improvement of uniformity of beam performance. The simulation is performed with the conformal array of cut-sphere shape. As a result, the standard deviation of 3 dB beamwidth in elevation is greatly reduced but the directivity index is also reduced. To alleviate this trade-off, we propose a convex optimization using a shading function.

Currently, studies on the estimation algorithm based on compressive sensing are actively underway, but to the best of our knowledge, no study on the performance of the Sparse Spectrum Fitting (SpSF) algorithm in nonuniform sensor arrays has been made. This paper deals with the derivation of the compressive sensing based covariance fitting algorithm extended to the frequency domain. In addition, it shows the performance of directon-of-arrival estimation of the frequency domain SpSF algorithm in non-uniform linear sensor array system and the sensor array failure situation.
Passive sonar system forms the various beams in any desired directions to obtain the improvement in Signal-to-Noise (S/N) ratio, bearing detection and localization of targets, and the attenuation of interferences from other directions. The improvement of beamforming is very important to detect modern underwater targets as noise reduction technology leads to considerably low-level acoustic emissions in the long range in complex environmental sea. In this paper, we proposed the spatial cross correlation beamforming (SCCBF) algorithm using cross correlation matrix of individual hydrophone pairs of linear array sensors. By the theoretical analysis and simulation, the proposed SCCBF is demonstrated that its performances compared to conventional beamforming (CBF) output can be obtain above 3dB of array gain and about half of beam width represented the bearing accuracy in target detection. Also, this paper presents sea test result of linear passive sonar system that the proposed algorithm implemented.
An underwater sound surveillance system detects and tracks enemy ships in real-time using hydrophone arrays, in which seabed-mounted sensor arrays play a pivotal role. In this paper the conceptual design of seabed-mounted, cylindrical hydrophone arrays for use in shallow coastal waters is performed via finite element calculations. To stabilize the receiving characteristics under the ocean ambient noise, a technique for whitening the ambient noise spectrum using a metal baffle is proposed. Optimization of the array configuration is performed to achieve the directivity in the vertical and azimuthal directions. And the effects of the sonar dome shape and material on the structural vibration and sound scattering properties are studied. It is demonstrated that a robust hydrophone array, having a sensitivity deviation less than 4 dB over the frequency range of interest, can be obtained through the whitening of the ambient noise, the optimization of the array configuration, and the design of acoustically transparent sonar domes.
In modern passive sonar systems, a towed array sensor is used to minimize the effects of own ship noise and to get a higher SNR. The thin and long towed array sensor can be guided in a non-linear form according to the maneuvering of tow-ship. If this change of the array shape is not considered, the performance of beamformer may deteriorate. In order to properly beamform the elements in the array, an accurate estimate of the array shape is required. Various techniques exist for estimating the shape of the linear array. In the case of a method using a heading sensor, the estimation performance may be degraded due to the effect of heading sensor noise. As means of removing this potential error, weighted polynomial fitting technique for estimating array shape is developed here. In order to evaluate the performance of proposed method, we conducted computer simulation. From the experiments, it was confirmed that the proposed method is more robust to noise than the conventional method.
In order to obtain high-resolution seafloor images, research on SA (Synthetic Aperture) processing and the development of related underwater systems have been performed in many countries. Recently the SA processing is also recognized as an important technique in Korea and researchers started related basic study. However, most previous studies ignored the Doppler effect by a moving receiver array. In this paper reconstructed SAS (Synthetic Aperture Sonar) images and position errors are analyzed according to the speed of a moving array for understanding its moving effect on the SAS images. In the analysis the spatial frequency domain interpolation algorithm is used. The results show that as the moving speed of the array increases the estimated position error also increases and image distortion gets worse when we do not consider the array motion. However, if the compensated receiver signals considering the array motion are used the position error and image distortion can be eliminated. In conclusion a signal processing scheme which compensates the Doppler effect is necessary especially in the condition where the array speed is over 1 m/s.

The transducers used in active sonar on surface ships are packed in a specific geometry in the array drum in order to meet the requirements such as the source level, directional beam pattern, etc. This paper describes the acoustic characteristics of the cylindrical array which is based on a 64 vertical staves arrangement, each stave composed 5 independent transducers. Firstly, the single transducer on the rigid baffle in the water is analyzed with the Finite Element Method. From the result of the FE analysis nodal velocities on the radiation surface is calculated and used with the boundary conditions of the transducers mounted on the array drum. Then the acoustic pressure is calculated in the field points using the Boundary Element Method and the other acoustic informations, the source level, beam pattern, near field and far-field distance, were acquired.
