  • This study was carried out to investigate the optimum management system during a overwintering for the production of Pinus densiflora container 2-0 seedlings. The experiment performed between 2005~2006 in a polyethylene film house (PE house) located at Yeoju-Gun in Kyungki-Do. During the winter in the PE house, the difference in maximum day temperature and minimum day temperature was large, and the difference in temperature was detected between the container keeping locations. During the winter season, the maximum day temperatures at the seedling bench in January and February were $32.8^{\circ}C$ and$36.6^{\circ}C$, respectively, whereas those at the ground in January and February were $16.0^{\circ}C$ and $24.4^{\circ}C$, respectively. Water contents of container seedlings was reduced gradually from the beginning the experiment, and reduced rapidly from February to March, and increased rapidly from April. Container seedlings showed different death rate according to the extending of the irrigation cycle. Death rate by one week and two weeks of irrigation cycle was 4.8% and 6.5%, and 38.5% and 49.4% of death rate occurred by three and four weeks of irrigation cycle, respectively. It is suggested that the proper irrigation cycle for P. densiflora 2-0 container seedlings during overwintering is two weeks. When containers placed directly on the ground, the root of container seedlings went out through the drainage of the container, and grew out in the soil. These roots were cut while moving the container to the bench in spring.

  • The aim of our study was to compare the wound responses and fine root development after root cutting and wound dressing among different tree species. The roots (2~4 cm in diameter) of mature Pinus densiflora, Prunus serrulata var. spontanea, and Zelkova serrata grown in Sangju, South Korea, were cut every 6 months from May 2014 to November 2016. The cut roots were subjected to pastes of vaseline and organic fertilizer. Six months after cutting, fine root development in the cut roots was examined. There was a significant increase in the fine root development in P. serrulata and Z. serrata; however, the development was rarely observed in P. densiflora. Zelkova serrata showed the highest fine root development among the three species in both the control and organic paste treatment groups. No significant differences in fine root development were observed in P. serrulata among the treatments. These results indicate that different tree species exhibit different responses to wound dressing after root cutting, which suggests that specific treatments must be applied to specific tree species.

  • The objectives of this study were to understand the physiological responses and resistance of red pine trees to ozone exposure in relation to nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization. Potted one-year-old seedlings of Pinus densiflora S. et Z. were exposed in an open-top chamber(OTC) to ozone at concentration of 0.12ppm for 3 hours daily for eight weeks with or without N and P fertilization alone or in combination. The OTC had dimensions of 2.0m in height and 2.5m in diameter, and the air in a control chamber was filtered with activated charcoal to maintain the ozone concentration below 0.02ppm. After eight weeks of ozone exposure, none of the seedlings showed any symptoms of visible injury on leaves. The seedlings fertilized with N and P in a control chamber showed 22 to 95% increase in total dry weight, and similar fertilizer effect was also noticed in an ozone chamber. Ozone treatment did not decrease the total dry weight, but increased shoot/root ratio by 14.5%. Ozone treatment increased sucrose content in the leaves by 23%, but decreased sucrose content in roots by 20% regardless of N or P application. Starch content in the leaves was not affected by either ozone or fertilizer. However, starch content in the roots was decreased by 41% by ozone treatment. Chlorophyll content in the leaves was increased by 70% by N application, but was not affected by ozone treatment. Nitrogen and P fertilization stimulated net photosynthesis by 80% in a control chamber, but stimulatory effect of N and P on net photosynthesis was 22.3% less in an ozone chamber. Net photosynthesis of the seedlings with no fertilization was not affected by ozone treatment. Based on the observed interactions between N, P, and ozone, it was concluded that the stimulatory effect of fertilization on growth of Pinus densiflora would be decreased by ozone treatment, but fertilization would increase resistance to ozone by re-allocation of increased carbohydrates.

  • This experiment was carried out to compare the cultural characteristics of mycorrizal fungi associated with Pinus species, and to form mycorrhizal association with Pinus thunbergii by artificial inoculation of these fungi. Mycorrhizal fungi tested showed great variations in cultural characteristics. Most fungal isolates was best grown on MP medium, except PDA for Lepista sp.(Ln73/92). Hagem for Rhizopogon rubescens(FRI91017), and FDA for Paxillus sp.(Pa60/92). Optimum temperature for these fungi was $25^{\circ}C$, except $30^{\circ}C$ for Pisolithus tinctorius(FRI91004 and Pt1). The range of pH conditions favorable for these fungal isolates were also variable from weak acidic(pH5) to weak alkalic(pH8). Utilization of the carbon sources for these mycorrhizal fungi was different. Fructose, glucose, and maltose were all utilized well, while xylose was not utilized generally. Mycelial growth on the media supplemented with potassium nitrate was better than those on other media with urea, asparagine, or peptone as a nitrogen source, and the poor growth was observed on the media with urea. Pisolithus tinctorius(Pt1) among 7 mycorrhizal fungi artificially inoculated for the mycorrhizal synthesis on pinus thunbergii seedlings in the test tube containing a mixture of peat moss-vermiculite(2:1, v/v) formed mycorrhizae successfully after 3 months. P. tinctorius formed branched and unbranched roots covered with thick fungal mantle and radiating extemal hyphae. Mycorrhizal root cross-sectioned by hand, stained, and observed by Nomarski interference microscope showed typical characteristics of ectomycorrhizae: fungal mantle on epidermal cells and thick Hartig net hyphae around cortex cells.

  • The effects of Al and Mn concentration on dry weight growth, nutrient status and gas exchange rates of 2-Year-old Japanese red pine(Pinus densiflora) seedlings grown in a nutrient culture solution were investigated. Al was added as aluminum chloride at 0, 10, 30 or 60ppm, and Mn was added as manganese chloride at 0, 30 or 60ppm to the nutrient culture solution. The pH of the solution was maintained at 4.0 by adding HCl or NaOH solution. The seedlings were transplanted into the nutrient culture solution, then they were grown in a greenhouse for 90 days. The interactive effects of Al and Mn on the dry weight growth of the seedlings were not significant. There were a main effect of Al or Mn on the dry weight growth and element concentrations of the seedlings. The treatment with Al of ${\geq}10ppm$ or that with Mn of 60ppm induced a significant reduction in the dry weight growth, which indicates that the effect of Al is stronger than that of Mn. The chlorophyll content of needles was not affected by Al treatment, but was significantly reduced by treatment with Mn of 60ppm. Furthermore, the treatment with Al of 60ppm or that with Mn of ${\geq}30ppm$ caused a significant reduction in the dark respiration rate of the roots. The net photosynthetic rate of the seedlings reduced with increasing the concentration of Al or Mn in the nutrient culture solution, which suggests that Al or Mn induced reductions in the relative growth rate(RGR) and net assimilation rate(NAR) of the seedlings were mainly due to the decrease of net photosynthesis.

  • Biomass, tissue (foliage, stem. and root) nutrient concentration, and nutrient use efficiency (NUE) were determined for 1-year-old Pinus densiflora, Larix leptolepis and Betula platyphvlla var. japonica seedlings in a greenhouse under nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilization treatments. There were no consistent patterns in the effect of fertilization on seedling growth, however, in most cases the addition of N and P had no stimulating effect on biomass. In general, seedling tissue N and P concentrations increased after fertilization. It appeared that fertilization induced luxury nutrient consumption because uptake was increased without altering biomass. The NUE. calculated as the ratio between total above and belowground production and nutrient content in seedlings, decreased with increasing N and P supply for P. densiflora and B. platyphylla var. japonica while that for L. leptolepisthe did not change. B. platyphylla var. japonica had the highest NUE, L. leptolepis the lowest, with P. densiflora having the intermediate NUE.

  • This study examined the status of the vegetation around Gangcheonsan provincial park located in Sunchang-gun in Jeollabuk-do and Damyang-gun in Jeollanam-do from June 4 to October 12, 2011. Gangcheonsan vegetation was arranged 9 plant communities in accordance with data of 28 releves. Major forest vegetation included Quercus variabilis communityand Quercus variabilis-Quercus serrata community, Pinus densiflora community, and Pinus densiflora-Quercus variabilis community (evergreen coniferous forest in all), and Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis community (plantation). Wetland vegetation included Salix gracilistyla community (riverbank forests), Phragmites japonica community, and Polygonia thunbergii community. Gangcheonsan Provincial Park has beautiful scenery that is in harmony with fantastically-shaped rocks, waterfalls, and valleys and conserves a specific plant community habitat distributed through the forest wetlands including its valleys. It is necessary to conduct long-term monitoring with its focus on Pinus densiflora community, Lycoris koreana community, and Lycoris squamigera community in the provincial park to grasp the characteristics of ecological inhabit changes in major communities and provide active methods for conservation, restoration, and publicity.

  • This study conducted an experiment to clarify the effect of rubber bands used as a root connector during the process of transplanting landscape trees on the development of the root system and the rooting process. The research period was four years, from April 2007 to April 2011, and the test conducted for this study was performed at the experimental field located at 398-2 Bangdong-ri, Sacheon-myeon, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do. Twenty 15-year-old Pinus densiflora Siebold & Zucc. with good growth conditions were harvested and transplanted from the forest in Jebi-ri, Gujeong-myeon, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do for the field experiment. A completely randomized design was applied for plot design, with 10 pines without rubber bands and 10 pines with rubber bands. Pinus densiflora for. multicaulis Uyeki was selected as the official tree of the pot test and was planted in a transparent pot to observe the development of the root system. A completely randomized design was applied for plot design, with 3 pines without rubber bands and 3 pines with rubber bands. The results of this research on the effect of rubber bands used as a root connector on root system development and the rooting process are as follows. 1. The rate of height growth in the field test was 4.1% lower in the trees with rubber bands when compared to trees without rubber bands. Trees with rubber bands were 4.2% wider than those without rubber bands in root diameter. The chlorophyll content was 6.8% higher in trees without rubber bands, but the rate of height growth, root diameter, and chlorophyll content were not significantly correlated. 2. In the comparison of fresh root weight in the field test, trees with rubber banding had roots weighing 1,740.0kg and those without rubber bands had roots weighing 1,433.3kg. Root dry weight was 522.3g in trees with rubber bands and 450.0g in those without rubber bands, but showed no significant difference depending on whether the rubber band was attached. 3. In a comparison of root number between surfaces touching and not touching the rubber band in trees with rubber banding, the surface touching the rubber band was observed to have more roots growing, the difference of which was deemed significant. 4. The shoot growth rate in the pot test was 1.1% higher in trees without rubber bands when compared with trees with rubber bands. The chlorophyll content was 0.02 higher in trees with rubber bands but the difference was not significant. 5. In the pot test, no significance was found in comparison of root number, root length, and root dry weight in trees with and without rubber bands. These test results imply that removing rubber bands as a connector does not present any significant effects on the ground growth or root development of transplanted pine trees. As it is shown that surface touching rubber bands grow more roots in trees with rubber bands, more active related research must be undertaken.

  • Researches on estimating national-scaled forest biomass are being carried out to quantify the carbon stock of forests with the Kyoto Protocol. In general, estimates of national-scaled forest biomass are based on forest inventory data which provides estimates of forest area, stem volume, and growth of stem by age classes. Estimates of forest biomass are, however, obtained by converting stem volumes to dry weight with stem density and thereafter to whole tree biomass with biomass expansion factors (ratios of whole tree dry weight to stem dry weight). Pinus densiflora is widely distributed and one of the most economically important timber species in Korea. The species are largely grouped into two ecotypes of Geumgang and Jungbu. Stems of Geumgang type trees are straight and high compared to those of Jungbu type trees. The objective of this study was to determine and compare stem density and biomass expansion factors fore two ecotypes of Pinus densiflora according to stand age. Stem density of both ecotypes of Pinus densora increased and biomass expansion factors of them decreased with increasing tree age. In he same age class, stem density and biomass expansion factor of Geungang type Pinus densiflora were lower than those of Jungbu type Pinus densiflora. There were statistically significant differences in stem density and biomass expansion factors between Geumgang type and Jungbu type Pinus densiflora in 0-20-year-old stands and 40-60-year-old stands. Our results suggested that the reliability of the national forest biomass inventory could be improved by applying the ecotype- and age-dependent stem density and biomass expansion factors.
