  • The free vibration characteristics of the cylindrical shell submerged in water is investigated using by FEM and experiment. In the FE analysis, the fluid-structure interaction effect is concerned. The restraint condition is clamped-free. In the results, the natural frequency and mode shape characteristics are evaluated with various water height. This results are compared with those of experiment to verify the validation of the FE analysis. The change of damping ratio is also presented by experiment.

  • The continuous circular cylindrical shells are widely used for the high performance structures of aircraft, spacecraft, missile, nuclear fuel rod shell etc.. In this paper, a method for the free vibration analysis of the continuous circular cylindrical shells with the multiple simple supports is developed by using the receptance method. With this method, the vibrational characteristics of the continuous system is analyzed by considering as a combined structure. The system receptance is also derided by the application of the equilibrium of forces and the continuity of displacements at the support points. The natural frequencies and mode shapes are calculated numerically and they are compared with the FEM results to improve the reliability of analytical solution. Numerical results on the 4-equal-span continuous circular cylindrical shell are presented in this paper.

  • Modelling and crashworthiness analysis of simplified vehicle structures with beam element and nonlinear spring element to which axial and bending collapse mecha- nisms are applied are carried out. And on the basis of these analyses, two types of full car modelling and crahworthiness analyses with nonlinear spring and beam element are accomplished. The one is the full car model of which 30% of the structures are modelled with nonlinear spring and beam element, and the other 75% of whole structures. And the results are compared with those of full car analysis with shell element.

  • A study on the structural analysis of the composite laminated cylindrical shell which has simply supported boundary conditions at both ends, was performed. The results were used into the neural networks. Neural networks identify the load characteristics of the composite shells. Momentum Backpropagation which the learning rate can be varied was developed. Input patterns consist of strains at 9 side points which is divided equally. Output layers are the load characteristics. Developed program was used for the training. The training with variable learning rate was converged close to real oad characteristics. Inverse engineering can be applicable to the composite laminated cylindrical shells with developed neural networks.

  • An analytical method for linear free vibration of fully liquid-filled circular cylindrical shell with various boundary conditions is developed by the Fourier series expansion based on the Stokes' transformation. A set of modal displacement functions and their derivatives of a circular cylindrical shell is substituted into the Sanders' shell equations in order to explicitily represent the Fourier coefficients as functions of the end point displacements, forces, and moments. For the vibration relevant to the liquid motion, the velocity potential of liquid is assumed as a sum of linear combination of suitable harmonic functions in the axial directions. The unknown parameter of the velocity potential is selected to satisfy the boundary condition along the wetted shell surface. An explicit expression of the natural frequency equation can be obtained for any kind of classical boundary conditions. The natural frequencies of the liquid-filled cylindrical shells with the clamped-free, the clamped-clamped, and the simply supported-simply supported boundary conditions examined in the previous works, are obtained by the analytical method. The results are compared with the previous works, and excellent agreement is found for the natural frequencies of the shells.

  • In this study, new medial surface calculation methods using Voronoi diagrams are investigated for the point samples extracted on closed surface models. The medial surface is defined by the closure of all points having more than one closest point on the shape boundary. It is a one of essential geometric information in 3D and can be used in many areas such as 3D shape analysis, dimension reduction, freeform shape deformation, image processing, computer vision, FEM analysis, etc. In industrial parts, the idealized solid parts and shell shapes including sharp edges and vertices are frequently used. Other medial surface extraction methods using Voronoi diagram have inherent separation and branch problems, so that they are not appropriate to the sharp edged objects and have difficulties to be applied to industrial parts. In addition, the branched surfaces on sharp edges in shell shapes should be eliminated to obtain representative medial shapes. In order to avoid separation and branch problems, the new approach by analyzing the shapes and specially sampling on surfaces has been developed.

  • In the analysis of thin elastic structures such as plate and shell-like structures, classical lower-order theories like Kirchhoff and Reissner-Mindin theories are insufficient to describe the behavior of such structures in the region where the state of stresses is complex. On the other hand, the fully three dimensional theory of linear elasticity can provide desired analysis accuracy, but requires expensive computational implementation compared to the classical theories. This paper is concerned with the development of hierarchical models for elastic structures which can be used for hierarchical modeling for the analysis of such structures. Derivation and limit model analysis (when the thickness of structures tends to zero) of hierarchical models are presented together with a introduction of modeling error estimation. Also, numerical results supporting theoretical results are given.

  • In this study, the dynamic characteristics of Bellows, used for expansion joint, were investigate by F.E.M. Using the axisymmetric conical frustum element, the natural frequencies, modevectors and the parameters governing the dynamic characteristics of Bellows were also investigated. Through the experiment, it was shown that the results calculated by finite element method and measured experimental values were in good agreement.

  • The effects of prebuckling on the buckling of laminated composite cylindrical shells are investigated. Both axial compression and lateral pressure are considered for laminated composite cylindrical shells with length to radius ratios usually associated with container vessels. The shell walls are made of a laminate with several symmetric ply orientations. The study was made using finite difference energy method, utilizing the nonlinear bifurcation branch with nonlinear prebuckling displacements. The results are compared to the buckling loads determined when prebuckling displacements are neglected.

  • In order to measure the vibration of a ribbed clindrical shell, the principle of reciprocity has been implemented. An accelerometer was fixed at the position defined as the excitation point. An impact hammer was used to tap at the response array points (64 points) located along the circumference of the shell. The frequency response function was reciprocally measured at each point in turn. The response data was processed to obtain the frequency/wavenumber spectrum. From the spectrum the characteristics of wave propagation on the ribbed cylindrical shell have been observed.
