  • Pre-treatment steps of fresh produce as Saengshik raw materials are followed by initial clean-up, dipping, primary washing, and cutting. Hypochlorous acid solution was applied in the dipping step to reduce natural microflora. Also, procedures were changed by cutting, dipping and then primary washing, and the efficacy of hypochlorus acid was evaluated. Potatoes, carrots, kales, and angelicas were submerged in water or 100 ppm of hypochlorous acid for 5 min. After initial clean-up, the aerobic plate counts of potatoes, carrots, kales and angelicas were 4.7, 5.3, 5.6, and 5.7 log CFU/g, respectively. When samples were submerged into water, it only reduced the population of natural microflora by 0.2 to 1.1 log CFU/g, whereas when treated with hypochlorous acid, it reduced the population by 0.5 to 2.8 log CFU/g. Reductions of natural microflora in green leafy vegetables were more highly achieved than bulbs such as potatoes and carrots. However, the numbers of natural microflora were increased after cutting step. To control the cross contamination at the cutting process, the process was changed as follows: initial clean-up, cutting, dipping in hypochlorous acid, and then primary washing. It showed effective reduction of the population by 2.3 to 3.2 log CFU/g. Hypochlorous acid solution could be useful as a sanitizer for surface washing of fresh vegetables.

  • Removal rates of residual organic phosphorous pesticides (chlorpyrifos-methyl and fenitrothion) in Perilla leaves by various washing methods were determined. The removal rates using stagnant tap water were 20.05 and 17.70% for chlorpyrifos-methyl and fenitrothion, whereas 44.28 and 39.10% using flowing tap water, and 19.14 and 15.43% using activated carbon-added stagnant tap water, respectively. Activated carbon-added flowing stagnant tap water removed 25.29 and 15.43% of chlorpyrifos-methyl and fenitrothion, and removal rates were 53.51 and 50.62% with alkaline solution and 30.25 and 28.09% with acidic solution, respectively. With neutral detergent solution, removal rates were 81.52 and 76.56% for chlorpyrifos-methyl and fenitrothion, respectively. Results revealed washing method using neutral detergent solution was most effective for removing residual pesticides.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the cleansing performance of a distilled water, a diluted solution of sodium hypochlorite as a household bleaching cleanser and three alkaline peroxide cleansers in vivo plaque deposits by using scanning electron microscope. Materials and methods: Five individuals were selected from department of the prosthodontics in Pusan National University Hospital, and each of them was inserted with specimens for plaque accumulation in their temporary dentures for 48 hours. The specimens were removed and cleaned by each cleansing agents for 8 hours. Scanning electron micrographs were made from the specimens at a magnification of ${\times}2,000$. A panel of ten persons with a dental or paradental background, but not directly involved in the study, was selected to analyze the photomicrographs to determine which denture cleanser was more effective in removing plaque. Results: Diluted solution of sodium hypochlorite was the most effective at removing plaque following $Polident^{(R)}$, $Cleadent^{(R)}e$, $Bonyplus^{(R)}$ and distilled water in order. But there was no significant difference of cleansing efficacy between diluted solution of sodium hypochlorite and $Polident^{(R)}$, $Polident^{(R)}$ and $Cleadent^{(R)}e$, $Cleadent^{(R)}e$ and $Bonyplus^{(R)}$, respectively (P > .05). Alkaline peroxide cleansers by themselves cannot adequately remove accumulated plaque deposits, especially if the deposits are heavy. Corrosion could be seen on the surface of non-precious alloy specimens immersed in diluted solution of sodium hypochlorite. Conclusion: It is recommended to use of alkaline peroxide type cleansers with brushing whenever possible, since denture cleanliness is often poor due to the relative inefficiency of these cleansers.

  • The effect of non-ionic surfactants added by hydroxides was studied to wash HOCs-contaminated soil. The kinds and concentrations of additives-mixed surfactants suitable for the soil washing were found. The effects of temperature on the soil washing were analyzed and the relations of HLB and cloud point were estabilished. As the base strength was increased, the washing efficiency was increased : NaOH>KOH> Mg(OH)$_2$>Al(OH)$_3$. Washing efficiency was not enhanced by Al(OH)$_3$for coagulation effect. When NaOH was added to POE$\_$5/ washing efficiencies by 0.01 M and 0.1 M solutions were increased to 62.5% and 67.3%, respectively. At 1 M of NaOH washing efficiency was decreased to 4.2%. The Optimum concentration ratio of mixed surfactant [POE$\_$5//POE$\_$14/] was 1.8%/1.2% without additives. But optimum concentration ratio of surfactants was changed to 1.2%/1.8% with 0.01 M of NaOH addition. The surface tensions and CMCs of mixed surfactant added by NaOH solutions were investigated. The addition of NaOH reduces the surface tension of more hydrophobic surfactants. The nonionic surfactant of higher HLB showed highed cloud point.

  • The effect of washing fingerprints deposited on glass that were contaminated with a flammable liquid (gasoline, kerosene, diesel, and thinner) was studied by washing with hexane or heptane. The fingerprints were visualized using fuming cyanoacrylate, followed by basic yellow 40 staining. After comparing the washing effect, by dividing one fingerprint into four sections, it was confirmed that the ridge detail was damaged by dissolving the fingerprints in flammable liquid. As a result of washing fingerprints contaminated with flammable liquids using hexane or heptane, fingerprints contaminated with gasoline, kerosene, and thinner did not show a washing effect because the ridge detail was damaged at the time of contamination, and only fingerprints contaminated with diesel exhibited improved ridge detail quality. Because hexane and heptane washing damage the ridge detail, it was found that fingerprints contaminated with gasoline, kerosene, and thinner were better enhanced directly without the washing process. In addition, it was found that the amount of the washing solvent and contact time should be minimized when washing fingerprints contaminated with diesel.

  • The treatment of petroleum contaminated soil requires various physico-chemical remediation technologies which are efficient in time and can reduce the possibility of secondary contamination by themselves In this study, an innovated soil washing process was proposed to treat the diesel-contaminated soil. Micro-bubbles, which were generated by hydrogen peroxide, deserted and floated the contaminants. Soils less than #60(0.25mm) were artificially contaminated by 6,500mg TPH/kg dry soil initially. The process was examined for pH, the soil to water mixing ratio, concentration of $H_2O$$_2$, and contacting times. In the case of less than #60 soil, maximum removal efficiency(60%) was obtained at pH 12. 1.0% hydrogen peroxide, and 1 : 5 soil to water mixing ratio for 1 hour.

  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread soil contaminants and major environmental concerns. PAHs have extremely low water solubility and are strongly sorbed to soil. A potential technology for remediation of PAHcontaminated soils is a soil washing with surfactant solutions. While the use of surfactants significantly enhances the performance of soil remediation, operation costs are increased. Selective adsorption of PAHs by activated carbons is proposed to reuse the surfactants in the soil-washing process. The adsorption isotherms of pure chemicals (Triton X-100 and phenanthrene) onto three granular activated carbons were obtained. The selective adsorption of phenanthrene in mixed solution was examined at various concentrations of phenanthrene and Triton X-100. The selectivity results were discussed with pore size distribution of activated carbons and molecular sizes of phenanthrene and the Triton X-100 monomer. The selectivity for phenanthrene was much larger than 1 regardless of the particle size of activated carbons. The selective adsorption using activated carbons with proper pore size distribution would greatly reduce the material cost for the soil washing process by the reuse of the surfactants.

  • The effects of washing and desinewing on the composition, fuctional properties, storage stability and texture of spent layer meat were investigated. Spent layer meat subjected to treatments involving water washing, bicarbonate washing and desinewing showed increases in moisture content and decreases in protein content, hydroxyproline content and heme pigment content. Increases in salt extractable protein content and water holding capacity and decreases in buffering capacity and emulsifying capacity were also observed. The 2-thiobarbituric acid values of washed and desinewed samples increased slowly during storage indicated the increase in storage stability compared to the control. Sample rolls prepared from bicarbonate washed and desinewed thigh and drumstick meats were scored by trained sensory panelists as less tough than the products made of ground thigh and drumstick meats.
