It was studied to utilize wasted food as a starting material to produce for activated carbon. The wasted food was chemically activated with zinc chloride. Experiments were carried out at different chemical ratios(activating agent/wasted foods), activation temperatures, and activation time. The activated products were characterized by measuring the iodine and methylene blue number, the BET surface area, the pore volume, the micropore ratio, the pore diameter, the yields and the scanning electron microscope(SEM). For the products activated by impregnation ratio of 1.0 of ZnCl$_2$ at 500$^{\circ}C$ for 60 min in a rotary kiln reactor had iodine number of 480 mg/g, methylene blue number of 95 mL/g, BET surface area of 410 m$^2$/g, pore volume of 0.248 cm$^3$/g, and average pore diameter of 2.43 nm, respectively. The activated carbon obtained had the contribution of micropore area of 70.7% to the total pore area and micropore volume of 53.2% to the total pore volume.

The non porous and porous 4-vinylpyridine-divinylbenzene ion exchange resins were synthesized by the suspension polymerization method. The functional groups of these resins were identified by means of infrared adsorption spectroscopy. The pore volume and pore spectra of these synthesized resins were determined with a mercury porosimeter. The influence of diluent and percentage of divinylbenzene on the pore size and volume of the porous 4-vinylpyridine-divinylbenzene copolymer, P-4VPDVB, 50-100 mesh was discussed. The ion exchange capacity of non-porous and porous 4-vinylpyridine divinylbenzene resins was 5.0meq/g, respectively.

Inorganic and inorganic/organic microcapsules were prepared by spray drying. $K_{4}SO$ and clay were used as the core and colloidal silica as the shell for the inoroganic microcapsules. Forthe inorganic/organic microcapsules were used the inorganic microcapsule which were mentioned above (core) and ethyl cellulose (shell). To characterize the prepared microcapsule for the practical use, the homogenity of surface and pore volume are the dominent factors. At the volume ratio of 0.3/0.7 of core/shell, the spherical and homogeneous surfaces of inorganic microcapsule could be synthesized. In the case of inorganic/organic microcapsules, the weitht ratio was 0.76/0.24. The pore volume of inorganic/organic microcapsules decreases more than that of inorganic microcapsule. The more the amount of shell (ethyl cellulose) in inorganic/organic microcapsules increases, the more the coating became homogeneous and the pore volume decreased.
Significant damage to concrete results from the intrusion of corrosive solutions, for example, dissolved chlorides corrode reinforcing steel and cause spatting. Effectively blocks the penetration of these solutions will eliminate or greatly reduce this damage and lead to increased durability. This study is to investigate the effects of pozzolanic admixtures, fly ash and silica fume, and a blast furnace slag on the chloride ion penetration of concretes. The main experimental variables wore the water-cementitious material ratios, the types and amount of admixtures, and the curing time. And it is tested for the porosity and pore size distributions of cement paste, chloride ion permeability based on electrical conductance, and 180-day ponding test for chloride intrusion. The results show that the resistance of concrete to the penetration of chloride ions increases as the w/c was decreased, and the increasing of curing time. Also, concrete with pozzolans exhibited higher resistance to chloride ion penetration than the plain concrete. The significant reduction in chloride ion permeability(charge passed) of concrete with pozzolans due to formation of a discontinuous macro-pore system which inhibits flow. It is shown that there is a relationship between chloride ion permeability and depth of chloride ion penetration of concrete, based on the pore structure (porosity and pore size distributions) of cement paste.

The objective of this research was to evaluate for the changes of pore structures and adsorption capacities due to the increase the numbers of reactivation. The reactivated GAC had experienced three cycles of water treatment and thermal reactivation. The pore size distributions of virgin and reactivated GACs were very different. The virgin GAC was mostly microporous (< $15\;{\AA}$), with less mesopores ($20{\sim}100\;{\AA}$). The reactivated GACs was mostly mesoporous ($20{\sim}100\;{\AA}$), with less micropores (< $15\;{\AA}$). The specific surface area and total pore volume were reduced as the number of reactivation increased. The maximum adsorption capacity (X/M) of virgin GAC ($964.6\;{\mu}g/g$) for $CHCl_3$ was 2~3 times larger than 1st~3rd reactivated GAC ($255.6{\sim}399.5\;{\mu}g/g$). The maximum adsorption capacity (X/M) of virgin GAC (19.5 mg/g) for DOC (dissolved organic carbon) was equal to that of 1st~3rd reactivated GAC (18.0~18.7 mg/g).
In this study activated carbon fibers were prepared from PAN-based carbon fibers by physical activation with steam or carbon dioxide. The variations in specific surface area amount of iodine adsorption and pore size distribution of the activated carbon fibers after the activation process were discussed. in steam activation BET surface area of about 1019 m2/g was obtained after 77% burn-off while carbn dioxide activation produced ACF with 694m2/g of BET surface area after 52% burn-off. However carbon dioxide activation produced at a similar degree of activation higher micropore volume(0.37 cc/g) and amount of iodine adsorption (1589mg/g) than steam activation. Nitrogen adsorption isotherms for (PAN based activated carbon fibers that prepared by physical activation were of type I in the Brunauer-Deming-Deming-Teller classification
The non-porous and porous polystyrene divinylbenzene copolymers were prepared by the suspension polymerization method. The non-porous aminated polystyrene divinylbenzene, N-APSTDVB and the porous aminated polystyrene divinylbenzene, P-APSTDVB of 50∼100mesh size weakly basic anion exchanger were synthesized by chloromethylation followed by amination with methylamine. The functional groups of these synthesized anion exchangers were confirmed by their infrared spectra. The maximum capacity of these exchangers was 4.86meq/g. Pore volume and pore spectra were determined with a mercury porosimeter. The pore volume of P-PSTDVB increased with increasing X$_{diluent}$ at 30% of divinylbenzene. However, the pore volume of P-PSTDVB increased with increasing volume percent of divinylbenzene at constant mole fraction of diluent, X$_{diluent}$ of 0.5. The pore volume of synthesized copolymer and anion exchanger at 8% divinylbenzene and 0.5X$_{heptane}$ decreased as follows; P-PSTDVB 〉P-APSTDVB 〉N-PSTDVB. This result was attributed to the possibility that the pore volume were reduced by amination reactions. The distribution coefficients of boric acid on the N-APSTDVB anion exchanger in various concentrations of alcohol water solutions showed that as alcohol concentration increased, the distribution coefficients values decreased due to the reduced concentration of H$_2$BO$_3^-$.

The purpose of present study is to examine the application of effective curing to hardener-free epoxy-modified mortars. The epoxy-modified mortars are prepared with polymer-cement ratios, subjected to two types of curing conditions, and tested for compressive, flexural and tensile strengths. As a result, hardener-free epoxy-modified mortars with steam curing is markedly improved with increasing air-dry curing period. High strength development of the epoxy-modified mortars may be achieved by the dense microstructure by cement and the hardener of the epoxy resin in the mortars.
Activated coffee chars were prepared from coffee waste by chemical activation with zinc chloride. In this study, the following processes were carried out ; roasting step, carbonization step, chemical activation step, and washing and drying step. The roasting step of coffee waste was carried out at $300{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes. The optimum condition of carbonization was at $650^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. The most important parameter in chemical activation of coffee char was found to be the chemical ratio of activation agents. Activated coffee chars prepared by various activation methods were characterized in terms of the nitrogen BET surface area, the BJH pore volume and pore size distribution at 77 K. The $N_2$-BET surface areas and total pore volume of coffee chars prepared by the chemical activation with $ZnCl_2$ were determined as about $1110{\sim}1580m^2/g$ and $0.51{\sim}0.81cm^3/g$, respectively. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the porosity and surface of activated coffee chars. From the results of SEM analysis, it was shown that active surface and many pores were formed after the chemical activation. The preparation of the activated coffee char from coffee waste was successfully carried out, which previews a possibility for exploitation of resources by recycling the waste.
